  1. There is a mechanical alarm contact switch for the factory radio. With an aftermarket radio you put tape on the radio or disconnect the switch. Never heard of the need for a bypass adapter - whatever it is.
  2. It is a direct swap. In fact when the 22 (220 in the US) came out people were putting them in cars that came originally with the 21 (210 in the US) because the 22 has aux-in and the 21 does not. The only thing is the 21 uses a metal mounting bracket that is not needed with the 22.
  3. And here it goes in. 1999 Boxster in for the 15k service and the tech sees the oil leak. The second picture shows the original seal on the left which has been removed from the engine, next to the Cayenne style seal that will be put in. You can see the screw that is put in the back of the seal so that the seal can be pulled out. The third is the crankshaft with the seal removed and the tech holding the new seal up to it. The fourth is the tool used to install the seal.

  5. I just asked on one of the German Boxster boards if anyone has experience with these modified mufflers. Interesting how the bypass pipes are located on top unlike the original sport exhaust.   7. #13 is the side trim panel I mentioned. If if cannot pull the bin out from the front then I remove a panel and reach my hand around to the back of the bin and push the bin out.
  8. I thought you would be the first to do this, or fail. The 997/987 factory short shift on a 2001 Boxster. Never been done before.
  9. You need to pull out the top storage bin before you can pull out the bottom bin. They are just a friction fit. You might need to remove one of the side trim panels so that you can put the tray out from the back.
  10. I think it was Paul or someone else from the UK who reported a year or so ago that Porsche changed the part number and the style of the connector, but this had not yet happened in the US. We use to order the connector 999 650 056 40 and the cover for the connector 999 650 056 56 that is shown on the right. It was black and there were 2 parts. I use to buy the identical parts from BMW. The last few times I was at BMW BMW had changed the part. It was now blue and the cover was attached to the connector, so there was only one part to buy. That is the one on the right, but I have removed the cover so that it is in 2 pieces. I think Porsche has also switched to this style connector except the color is black. The blue style connector works fine. In the second picture I have used it to make a harness.

  12. Nice picture. The nut for the steering wheel is 24 mm but the wheel bolt is 19 mm.
  13. That is an expensive piece of glass.
  14. The trim around the windshield is in 3 pieces. The way we did it is to remove the visors and the metal plate for the roof latch. To remove the plate pry off the 2 oval alien eyes for the motion sensor and behind them are 2 T30 screws. Then you pull the top trim away from the frame. The side or A pillar also pulls away but you lift it up a bit. You can get the wire down to the fuse box without removing the side vent. I forget exactly how we did it - I think the just shoved it down to the fuse box..

  16. Sounds like lifter noise which is 'normal' for a few seconds on a cold start. What weight oil are you using?
  17. It is done the same way on a Boxstir. You run a jumper wire from the fog light wire on the left bulb holder that has power to the wire on the right bulb holder that does not have power.
  18. This is a 2003 2.7 Boxster where this happened. The threaded end of the shaft sheared off with the nut still attached. I was told this happens because Porsche switched from a double roller bearing to a single at the end of the shaft. The top green line is the shaft. The bottom is the broken end with the nut.

  21. For a Boxster Porsche sells just the top half of the remote. Bet you can get one for a 996.
  22. You need the metal part and the valet key head as shown in the middle of the picture. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7222 The valet key head is much cheaper than a remote control key head. You need the key head because it has a chip inside that permits the car to start. If you stick just the metal part of the key in the ignition and turn it, it will not start the car. Unlike a remote key head a valet key head does not have a paper tag. But a valet key head still has to be programed or it will not start the car.
  23. If you have coolant in the oil then the usual cause is a blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder liner. Head gasket can be replace. Cracked liner means a replacement engine.
  24. A new remote comes with a paper tag with a series of numbers on it. I think it is a 24 digit code, not 16. Without that tag it is worthless.
  25. Come back to the San Jose area around April as I will try to get Peter Smith to put on a Cayman tech session like he did for us last year for the 987. By then there should be some inventory that is not flying out the door so he can take one apart for us to look at. The shape of the Cayman side vents looked the same as a 987 to me. The Cayman has an exposed air tube on the intake side that you do not see on the 987. However, after just a quick look it appeared if the Cayman vents attached differently than on a 987 so I cannot say for sure if you can put Cayman vents on a 987. I will have to get one of the mechanics to take another look with me to see if the Cayman vents will fit on a 987 without any modifications.
