  1. What is shown in picture #1 and picture #2?
  2. With the original AeroKit you got a new plastic trunk lid that was longer to cover the gap where the electric spoiler was. You need to remove the electric spoiler with the original AeroKit. The lid is 986 512 991 00, plus maybe an extension code for primer. There is also a black plastic blanking cover to cover the gap when the spoiler is removed - otherwise you would see a hole where the electric spoiler was when you lift up the plastic trunk lid.
  3. You should have the 4 electrode plug. I have raised a similar issue on the Boxster side. In 2000 the 2.5 Boxster became 2.7 and the 3.2 S came out. The 2.5 has 2 side electrodes and Porsche says to replace at 30k. When the 2.7/3.2 came out Porsche switched to 4 electrode plugs but Porsche still said 30k. But for the 2001 Porsche says 60k. The plugs and engines used for 2000 are identical for 2001. There is no reason for it to be 30k on a 2000 but 60k on a 2001. I have asked the mechanics and they also cannot figure out the discrepency. The plug in your car is the same as the 2.7/3.2 Boxster. We have replaced a few at 30k and the plugs looked almost like new. I consider the 4 electrode plug a 60k plug. On the Boxster side there are reviews of the Bosch Platinum +4 plugs.
  4. I have since looked at 6 other Caymans and they did not have an exposed air tube like the launch car did. They all had a black plastic plate behind the grill, just like on a 987. The first picture shows the air tube. In the second you cannot see it. Took a mechanic over to look at it. All we could figure out is that the part is missing.
  5. Well, then fix it for me so I can put it in my car. When I got that cluster I contacted 3 VDO repair shops to see if I could get a replacement LCD display. I was told VDO does not sell parts for electronic clusters. I even contacted VDO but they did not get back to me.
  6. Berny. Are you sure there is still oil in your motor? You know what they say. You only have to worry when there is no oil dripping because that means all the oil has dripped out.
  7. Yep. That is the no cost optional external antenna. I am going to show that picture to the next guy that complains about the lousy AM reception.
  8. I someone does not hand you the answer then search under "illumination" as this subject has been covered several times. Here are just 2. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7071 http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...hl=illumination
  9. Search around because this has been covered a few times. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=304&st=0 The speedometer and volt meter will work - nothing needs to be done. The oil pressure will not work unless you do something to hook up the gauge. There are 2 ways to make it work. Either way you will have to buy a 2 wire 996 oil pressure sender to replace the 1 wire Boxster sender. You also have to do someting so that the 996 cluster will go in because it is a bit wider due to the 2 extra gauges. That has been covered before. Monster Boxster with a 2000 2.7 has a 996 cluster. Since he put in a 3.4 from a 996 that engine already had the 2 wire sender. Your 1998 will look just like his 2000.
  10. That cluster should work since it is from a C2 prior to 2002. I do not think the fact it is from a tip matters, as there was a Boxster owner who put a 996 tip cluster in his manual transmission car.
  11. Arling posted this picture of, what?
  12. The cupholders you have, I call them the pop-out style, were only use for 1 year on the 996. They are easy to remove and move the A/C up above the radio where it should be. The only parts you need to buy is the A/C trim and 2 mounting brackets. Search on cupholderectomy.
  13. http://www.rennteam.com/showflat.php?Cat=0...n=0&page=1&vc=1
  14. If your car comes home one day looking like this maybe your wife will change her mind about the air horns. Especially if you tell her the front is her half when a truck backs up into you.
  15. Looks like I have some reading to do. I used the Amazon Renntech.org link. Update: Ok, I read the coolant tank replacement and convertible top transmission cable replacement pages since I have some recent experience. For the tank they say to remove the stress plate and braces under the car then all the hoses from inside the engine compartment. There is a tiny picture with arrows pointing to things you cannot make out unless you already know what they are. Then there is a picture of the tank but it is still in the car. That is the hard and long way to do it, if you can even do it without a lift. It is clear to me they never actually remove the tank. And the final note "installation is the reverse of removal." For replacement of the top cables there is a picture of the back side of an old style transmission with arrows pointing to the 4 screws you need to remove. The next paragraph starts with "after reattaching cable to transmission." It is a pain to get the cable off the worm gear drive and there is nothing to tell you how to do that other than to reattach the cable. If they had actually removed the cable then they should have at least a warning about the worm gear. And there is nothing about the new style transmissions. The seal installation tool is the old one from several years ago. And so on. So Renntech to will continue to live on, but now there are going to be questions about what is in the Bentley manual.
  16. A piece of black electrical tape.
  17. All the plastic window tops are the same. The liner first came out for model year 2000 just for the S. Then for model year 2001 the 2.7 also got the liner. The mechanic at my dealer that does all the top replacements showed me the extra part that is needed for the liner but I did not take a picture. I asked if the liner could be retrofitted to a 2.5 and he said yes, with that part. I did not ask for details since I had no personal interest in a liner for my 2.5.
  18. I use the 99 cents a gallon blue stuff, 69 cents when it is on sale. Might even try it instead of the Porsche coolant.
  19. Pictures of the Cayenne style seal are here. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...5&st=0entry24 The local dealer has put in a few. I am waiting to see if those cars come back.
  20. You need to measure current draw the way Berny said, and with a multi-tester set on amps. You cannot set the tester on amps and have a correct reading by touching the probes to the positive and negative terminals. Otherwise you are reading volts, and the gauge on your dash is a volt, not amp, meter. I have bought new batteries that would not hold a charge, after just a day, and after they were fully charged. They turned out to be defective when I took them back for a load test. Learned my lesson and now when I buy a replacement battery I have it load tested before I leave the store. Costco is the exception because they do not have a tester. Yes, you can buy a brand new defective battery. I know you had the same problem with the prior battery, and it does not make sense to have the same problem with a new battery. But it only takes a few minutes to go to any parts place to rule out the battery itself as the problem. If the battery test fine then something is drawing the current, so you go to the next step. BTY I think LoJack has it's own battery.
  21. Too bad. But at least you tried. And I suspected the blue tool would not work because the B&M/Porsche clone has a fat shift lever with a "hump" in it and you would not be able to clip the tool on. This was the same problem with the orange tool or the white version. The blue tool for the Porsche factory 997/987 short shift does not solve this problem. When the black Porsche clone (original B&M blue) came out for the 996/986 Peter and I went through the tool catalog and the Porsche computer to see if there was a new tool for the Porsche clone, since we could use it on the B&M. Nothing. Then he showed me the white tool, but it was identical to the orange tool. The search for the Holy Grail contines....
  22. I read an article about the Corvette run flat tires. Not only are they hevy but they do not handle well because the sidewall is so stiff. Some people remove them and put on conventional tires to improve handling.
