  1. Porsche/Kolenschmidt did not sleeve 996 motors.
  2. I obtained a copy of the TSBs dated Feb. 27, 2006, for the 2.7/3.2 987, and the Cayman (987). The TSBs are identical. Since I am in the US I have what was issued by Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche calls it a " Screeching Noise From The Engine During Warm-up" at about 2,000 rpm. The control piston in the oil pump cover is to be replaced with a new design, for engines made as of December 5, 2005. The mechanics did not have this part out of the engine on a 987, so they took one out on a 986 for my sample pictures. Takes longer to get the car on the lift then it does to replace this "piston", which I would call a valve, which is at the end of the spring in my second pic.
  3. I also say the wheel locks are not related to the VIN. If your car no longer has the "key" then you might remove them and put in standard wheel bolts. Have your dealer remove them and buy 4 new standard wheel bolts at the same time. I removed the locking wheel bolts long ago, and replaced them with the standard wheel bolts. They were less than $5 each when I did it.
  4. You need to remove the bumper cover to get the grills out.
  5. It is a glue. Reminds me of silicon. I lifted the crest out of the recess with the tiny screw driver in the pic. Bling....
  6. I have always wanted to go to one of those things in Ontario. When I started Boxstering 7 years ago Ontario did not exist. Parts and the training center for NorCal was in Reno. In fact, I think PCNA was also in Reno back then before it moved to Atlanta. So it took 2 seconds with a jewelers screwdriver. Bling..... I do not have a 3 button remote to play around with yet to see if there is any difference. The key head in my picture is a 996 2 button.
  7. Very common problem. There is a switch on the hand brake that gets funky on the early cars. Porsche has since changed the design of the switch. Search around as the replacement of this switch has been covered several times with pictures. To get your top going pump the hand brake up and down a bunch of times with the ignition on. Sometimes this improves the electrical contact in the switch because it is a plunger type switch. If you get lucky the dash light will come on. Then replace the switch when you get a chance. The switch does not cost much.
  8. Porsche list it for a 2002 and up because that is when the colored crest started. That does not mean it will not work with your 2001 silver crest. It would be nice if Porsche would put notations in it's parts list to indicate if certain parts will fit all years, but they do not do that. I have given that part number out several times when people ask why their crest is silver (because they have an older car) when they see newer cars with the colored crest. They want to know if they can buy a new (and expensive) remote so they can have a colored crest. I tell them to buy just a crest and see if it can be swaped. They never have reported back to me so I do not know if they did it and were able to pry off the silver crest and stick on a new one. If you will be the big spender and buy the crest I will ask one of the mechanics if they have a defective silver crest remote so I can see if I can just pry if off with no damage to the plastic remote. I be it is just held down with some type of adhestive.
  9. It is just a storage tray. Have not seen one for the new cars and I do not see such a part on the parts list. Don't see how it can be done on the new cars due to the console design change.
  10. The usual cause of a window drop problem when opening the door is the regulator. It is a know 996/986 issue. The window drop when you unlatch to the top is really not related.
  11. 0586slb is correct. Or, so, I was told about 5 or more years ago when I started to buy the yellow VW wires from my local dealer. Back then it was a VW/Audi/Porsche dealer. I asked what the yellow wires were used for. Some recall/service action for 1994 VW Golf, or something like that. Repair wires.
  12. "remanufactured engines are not made from blown up engines." So, what are they made from, skylar? For Gary, dream on....
  13. I have a hacksaw and grinder. Will travel.... This is a picture from 2 years ago of what I thought 986 owners should do to duplicate the 550 special edition "short shift.". But you cannot remove the shift lever like in this picture for the modification or you will not be able to put it back into the shift tower.
  14. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2833 http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1418&hl= The 2004 special edition had a normal type shift that was 1" shorter.
  15. I would kill the cats. If you cannot reproduce the problem then forget about it. These cars have been known to make hydraulic lifter noise and smoke. It has to do with the flat 6 engine design. This is usually at cold start up. I have always speculated Porsche switched to zero weight oil because people complained about lifter noise.
  16. I did the retrofit about 5 years ago on a December 1996 Boxster that did not have the temp sensor. All US cars have a/c as it is standard, as did this Dec. 1996 car. But cars made before January 1997 do not have the sensor unless it has the OBC option. US cars made in January 1997 and after have the sensor even if it does not have the OBC option. I do not think any UK cars have the sensor unless it has a/c or OBC. Strange how the specs are different than a US car. You have the temp sensor in the front grill and 2 wires that run through the trunk to a white 21 pin connector. You need to put 2 female pins in the connector for the 2 wires. The other half of the connector has/may have the 2 male pins that go to the instrument cluster for the temp sensor. The car I worked on had in the connector the 2 male pins going to the cluster. So I only needed to add the 2 female pins/wires from the sensor into the proper slots of the connector so that they mated with male pins when I put the connector back together. So, the first thing you need to do is to separate the white 21 pin conector to see if there are 2 male pins in the connector that have no mate, as those male pins go to the cluster. If you do not have these 2 unused male pins then I will have to ask Peter what to do next. This connector is next to the brake booster on a LHD. No clue where it is on a RHD. This is the connector on my car as an example. I separated it to get to the horn wire/pin. The purpose of this picture is to show the white 21 pin connector. I do not have a picture of same from when I did the temp sensor retrofit.
  17. An old oil debate comes back to life. To add to the obsession, if you have recently used Mobil 1, is the effects of Katrina. You might be using the "hurrican blend." Mobil was unable to supply one of the additives in the normal Mobil 1 formulation due to Katrina, so another additive was subsituted. Inventories of the "substitute" oil are still floating around. I'm about due for an oil change and don't want to put in the hurrican blend crap. I want pre-Katrina spec oil for my Boxster. Nothing but the best for my Boxstir....
  18. The belt for a car without a/c is 996 102 151 65. In the US a/c is standard. I have spoken to 2 Boxster owners who have converted their cars to track only and the a/c was removed. I did not ask the weight savings.
  19. Boil it if your are going to drink it, or live in New York. I grew up in New York. I use San Jose Municipal tap water, as does my San Jose dealership. The thing is, Porsche sells cars around the world, and cannot control the quality of your water. I would suggest you buy a 1 gallon jug of distilled water at your local supermarket. Then you might go to Porsche heaven. You can also use it for the battery.
  20. Cap is 996 106 447 01. I just add water to bring up the level.
  21. It does not take much power to turn on dash lights, but you need a lot of power to crank an engine. Once a battery goes bad a chager is not going to fix it - there is no magic cure. Time for a new battery.... http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2950
  22. If the 2003/4 muffler sounds different than 1997-2002 then I can't hear the difference. The only difference between the base and S mufflers is the number of tips. In 2003/4 Porsche went to a bolt on tip. That way Porsche only had to stock 1 muffler for the base and S. A local 2003 S owner put on the chrome "sport tip" so he has the original S tip if he has not sold it since I last saw him. I can give you the contact info if you are interested in his tip. But I think you would be wasting money by putting on a 2003/4 muffler.
  23. Repainted your car without your permission.... Enjoy your free sport exhaust and maintenance.
  24. 996 424 983 00 is the Porsche clone/B&M short shift already mounted in the black plastic shift housing. It is for 996/986. Looks like this. What is interesting is a note that the stock of this unit is to be used up, and then it is replaced by the 997/987 short shift 997 424 983 00. This is what Geoff put in his 986. See, Geoff, you were ahead of your time.
