  1. Some people put the factory storage bin/shelf in that location after the CD storage tray is removed.
  2. It depends on the finish of the part, or if it is covered with leather and what color. So there is not a single part number for all cars
  3. I got mine open by having Larry jump up and down on the hood while I pulled up on the release lever.
  4. http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.a...C-215F5E221636}
  5. Ok. If the combined green and blue plugs will not go in, then remove the yellow plug and combine it with the other 2. Then plug in all 3 at the same time.
  6. I have not hooked up the changer to PCM1, but I think it is the same as the standard radio. The changer wiring harness should have a green and blue plug. Blue goes to C3 and green to C2, which should be next to a yellow plug that is C1. Next pic is the standard radio and you can see the green and blue changer plugs in. Last pic is the back of a PCM unit, and I have put green and blue lines to where I think the changer plugs go. If my PCM1 pic is correct and you already have something in C2 and C3, then do you have aux-in or a phone or something?
  7. ....Matthew Bennett. Guess you will just have to change your name....
  8. I used Wheel Tech near the San Jose airport. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3904&hl= Since they refinish wheels they know how to change them. They did my last 2 sets of tires. Tom works the tire machine. They also put on a tech session for us last year. Years ago I tried to use Custom Alignment for my first set, but the next date they had open was 2 weeks away and I could not wait. Wheel Tech did it the day I called them. Wheel Tech is cheaper. Both are Tire Rack installers, so you have have your tires sent directly to them. Stevens Creek has new equipment at the new place. All 3 can do the job without scratching your wheels.
  9. There is a made in China switch out there. In the aftermarket and also sold by some dealers. I have also seen it on ebay. I have no problem with a part made in China, if it works. The German switch is crap after all. The problem is, the made in China switch also has problems.
  10. I think the knob itself would fit, but the 987/997 boot is way different than a 996/986.
  11. Sometimes the tool is a sloppy fit and the pop you hear is the tool slipping. Try a 5 mm socket instead. Check the mounting plate in this area. I have seen 2 cars and the plastic was broken and the light would not lock.

  13. I was at the dealer and saw one of the newer mechanics using this tool.
  14. You are better off buying used cards/panels from a car with the HiFi option. The door panels on a Box without the speakers are flat. If you buy the OEM speakers and enclosures they will not retrofit on a Box with flat cards.
  15. The removed link is the July 28, 2005 list. I checked 2 weeks ago with Peter Smith and that is still the most current list. Porsche comes out with a revised list about once a year, so there should be another list out in a few months. The original 15W-50 (red cap) is not on the current list. It had been on the lists for years, and then removed a few years ago. The EP version has never been on a list, since it is a relatively new edition to the Mobil 1 line. As for the Mercedes approved oils, it is hard enough for me to keep up with the ever-changing Porsche list. If I had a Mercedes this is what I would use. Extra Virgin, of course.
  16. I always said I would try to make a shift lever centering tool for a B&M/Porsche clone, and then retire. If I were you I would start with the green version, because it has an arch to it, unlike the almost flat versions of the red and white tools. I was not able to order Geoff's blue version because it had a standard 997 part number, and not a tool part number. Plus his blue version is identical to my green version. Porsche is a funny company. They put part numbers on the back of the tool, but it is not a tool part number. Tool part numbers start with 000 721 - then you know it is a tool. My green version is 000 721 961 91 when you order it as a tool. The "pinchers" of the tool are not wide enough for the fatter B&M shaft. I also think you would need to raise the arch even more than the green tool so that the pinchers can snap onto the shaft. These pictures are of the green tool on a spare standard 996/986 shift tower, so they are just a guide. I wish I had a B&M loaded in the tower so I could take measurements.
  17. Porsche does not make anything - except profits. Our air filter is made by Mann. http://www.mann-hummel.com/ I have seen the Mann air filter boxes at my local dealer and at independents. Same stuff until you put a Porsche part number on it and put it inside a Porsche box. It is not sold to customers at the parts counter in a non-Porsche box. Never understood why Porsche used a 996 part number for a filter that only works on a 986. Note the LX 566/1 part number. My original 1997 air filter that I saved all these years is on top. The bottom filter on the box is the Wix filter. I bought the "aftermarket" Wix filter to compare it to the OEM, thinking it too might be made in some Asian country. But, it is made by Mann in Austria and put in a Wix box. So, I take my Wix aka Mann filter and go to the Porsche dealer to take pics of the "official" filter. Note the LX 566/1 Mann number in the official filter I took a pic of a few days ago at my dealer, with the 996 part number. They are the same as far as I can tell....
  18. They are only about $3. Loren and I tried the green version on his B&M, and of course it did not fit.

  20. Time to pick an oil filter for my unapproved oil change. The oil filter sold by Porsche is made by Mahle. http://www.mahle.com/ I have some old stock Mahle/Porsche filters used for the pictures, so the part numbers may have changed a bit. Wix has come out with an oil filter for our cars. http://www.wixfilters.com/ I wanted to try this filter. So I bought it. From left to right. Wix, Mahle, and the Porsche branded Mahle. This is from the top, except there is no real top or bottom for any of these filters. From the side. They all have a nylon cage inside. The Wix has an o-ring to seal the top and bottom of the filter. The Mahle/Porsche has a paper-like material on the end-caps. The holes on the Wix filter look a bit too large - I will know for sure when I put it in. The Wix filter is made in South Korea. The Mahle/Porsche in Austria - until it gets outsourced. I am really not going to go to Porsche heaven....
  21. For technical questions and answers this is the place. http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi That message board also has a great search function. The subject is my 1997 Box with just under 60K miles. I am in San Francisco Bay Area. I think the last time we had sustained freezing weather in San Jose was during the last ice age. I took this Mobil 1 pic two years ago at a local parts place. I used the red cap 15W-50 for 7 years. The packaging and stuff inside has changed since then. And the red cap stuff is gone. My local dealer used it. I used it. But it is no longer on the current Porsche approved list. I considered Castrol 5W-50. A fine oil. Also used by my dealer until it too also went off the approved list. But I have no need for that wide of a viscosity range. Plust I would like to try Mobil's relatively new extended performance product. So I narrowed it do to this. But, I see no need for a OW oil for where I live, except on my salad. So I bought a five quart container of 15W-50 EP and four 1 quart containers of the same. 9 quarts total for my 60K oil and filter change. My old empty red cap 15W-50 is on the right. I am not going to Porsche heaven....
  22. People freak out about a lot of things. Go on the PCA tech site and search under the word oil. Here is one message, with an answer from Peter Smith. I have known Peter for 7 years since he was the shop foreman at my local dealer. http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.a...4-B48DA3093BBD} Peter told me that if you put way too much oil in then it can be sucked into the intake. You will know this when you start the car by the cloud of smoke. A small overfill is not going to hurt anything.
  23. Us 986 Box owners never got an oil pressure gauge. So, we do not worry about it like the 996 owners. I bought my non-Porsche oil filter today. Made by Wix. I will do a future report on the Wix aftermarket filter in the Box section.
