  1. Have you ruled out the hand brake switch? I would try another top control unit/relay. The part for a 1997-1999 is different than 2000-2004. There were problems with the unit on some early 2000s. The blue base where the pins are should have a black dot. If the windows do not drop then that can be a bad microswitch where the top latch is, or the control unit. If pin 18 is missing on the control unit then someone broke it off so that the top could be operated while the car is moving.

  3. This aftermarket clear/smoked LED brake light has been out for a few years. The only issue I have heard is that sometimes you need to reverse the positive and negative wires if the LEDs don't work.
  4. Pull out the headlight. There is a male connector on the rear of the black plastic headlight mounting bracket. Push on that connector with your finger and make sure it does not push back.
  5. More like $8,000, not hours, for the main harness and labor. Took almost a week. Car was taken apart like it was on the factory assembly line. All because of a repeated air bag light that could not be kept off after several fixes. It was either that, or buy the car back under the Lemon Law. His problem, on the other hand, may just be in the engine compartment.
  6. It is not a seal from the Cayenne, but it is the same style. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...pic=15&st=0 If you wait a while there might be a 5th generation seal....
  7. In the pic above the sliding glass roof is on the left, and the sun shade is on the right.
  8. There is not a true euro bumper cover. All covers are the same. For US cars 2 holes are cut into the "euro" cover to clear the brackets. There are marks inside the cover so the body shop knows where to cut the openings. A few people have put the 2003/2004 cover on an early car, such as Ian. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...entry4224 I do remember that someone who had the retrofit done had an issue with seeing the heat shield showing through the diffusers. It might have been Ian, but I'm not sure because others have done the retrofit. I do not remember anyone asking for heat shield parts numbers, so I assume the original heat shield was bent. You might ask Ian. The parts list has a listing for "heat protection." 1997-2002 is 986 505 475 00 and 2003-2004 is 986 505 475 01. I cannot tell from the diagram if it is a heat shield, but I bet it is. The 2003/4 heat shield would not be as tall as an early car. You can see the muffler through the cover on a 2003/4, but not an early car. The heat shield that goes above the tail pipe is riveted on. 2003/4 shield is 986 505 811 02. The pop rivet is 999 190 463 30. The back-up washer for the rivet is 900 151 028 02. You need 2 rivets and washers, or use standard pop rivets.
  9. Some thoughts. If the windshield has been replaced the antenna may not have been hooked up. Some people have tried improving the ground for the booster, by removing it, sanding the metal, and putting it back in. I guess the booster could be bad or it is not getting power. See if you can try another 996 in the same area and if that car has the same issue.
  10. What is the part number for the 6x40 490 amp, even if you no longer have it?
  11. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=720
  12. Here is an old list. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2609
  13. Mileage is stored in the instrument cluster. If you find a used cluster you can send the cluster to an aftermarket shop to set the miles to match your car.
  14. To make a long story short, there is now just one cable being sold by Porsche. It is for the left or right side. It is for the old or new style transmission.
  15. We have changed the plugs on several 2.5s with the 2 side electrode plugs, and the 2.7/3.2 Boxster and 996 with 4 side electrodes. I check the gaps on the 2.5 plugs and usually find a few that are offf a little bit. But it is easy to adjust the gap on that type of plug. The 4 side electrode plug is a different design. There is a gap spec for this type of plug but I have not figured out how you would measure it.
  16. Spark plug gappers usually have a tool to bend the side electrode. Or you can just pry against the insulator....
  17. This was just asked on Rennlist. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...ad.php?t=271718
  18. Someone on Rennlist got this Porsche memo. If you enlarge it you can see the Range 1-6 rpm numbers. Range 1 is 7,300 rpm to 7,500 rpm. Skipping Range 2-5. Range 6 is is 9,501 rpm to 11,00 rpm "at which time I reckon she'll pretty much blow up." Fuel shut off is the rev limiter which comes on at 7,300 rpm. So if someone got an engine into Range 6 they did something bad, like miss a down shift.
  19. Don't know because I never seen published data on the limits for the old range 1 and 2, just a lot of internet speculation. I use to say 1 was high and 2 was very high. But there is a Porsche memo on the new range 1-6.
  20. Single or double beep? Also make sure the lid for the storage box is latched. If you rule out all the above then it could be the microswitch for the front trunk latch or the switch for the lid. If these switches go bad the car thinks something is open, when it is really closed.
  21. With the 997 there are now 6 ranges. The 996 had 2.
  22. If it is this one it will fit. Looks like he only has the muffler. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsche-Box...1QQcmdZViewItem
