  1. The 'vin covered" picture in the link is one I took several years ago of a 2000 Boxster S at a tech session. That car is still running. I am not positive about the new cars. On the older models the Range X incidents were based on engine operating hours, not a time or date. When they PDI your car at your dealer it will be hooked up to the PIWIS. Ask them to print out a working log and give it to you so you can see if there are any incidents. I do not know anyone who has done this, but it can't hurt to ask. The cars are limited to 20 mph when they leave the factory. This speed limit is removed by the PIWIS at the dealer. Hard to imagine doing damage on the trip from Germany to your dealer with a 20 mph limit, but stranger things have happened.
  2. Well, 2 Sekurit windshields show up today. Hope it is not a bad omen that I am going to crack another one at the Laguna Seca drive this Saturday. Both had the mirror mount and antenna wire. If there is a difference between my replacement Sekurit glass and the Sekurit glass sold by the dealer, then all I can see is that there is no Porsche logo on my glass. There are no distortions in the glass, and it fits just like the 2 prior windshields. I have a 1997. The newer cars need a moulding/seal kit unless you can reuse the old one. My 1997 just needs a rubber seal that goes around the glass. This seal is glued in after the windshield is installed. My seal was replaced 2 years ago and we were able to reuse it because it had not been glued in back then. I waited an hour on the urethane and then took off with windshield #3. Glass $325. Labor $80. Urethane glue $20. Tax $28.46. Total was $453.46. The guys at the shop did a good job and I am happy. No Porsche "bug" on the glass, but I think it was bad luck for me anyway....
  3. My Sekurit windshield was supposed to be put in this morning, Tuesday. Got to the shop and my glass is not there, but it is on it's way in a few minutes from the local warehouse. We strip all the plastic trim off that needs to be removed, the wipers, and so on, waiting for the glass to arrive. This prep takes about 15 minutes if you have done it before. No glass shows up. It is on the way. They offer me a ride to the office but I already have a ride once I call the office to fetch me, but only after I see the glass that they want to put in. I tell them they are not to cut out the cracked windshield until I approve the replacement. So, one of the guys at the shop goes to fetch at the warehouse. Then they want to know how many wires I have in the windshield. I told them over a week ago I just had just the standard antenna, no diversity, no rain sensor, no self-dim mirror. So I then remove the windshield mirror to show them. Then a lady tells me there are 2 windshield at the warehouse. One does not have the mirror mount. The other has a crack. I did not ask what company made these windshields. I went back to the office in my Boxster. So, now a Sekurit windshield is supposed to be sent from Sacramento to San Jose, Wednesday. Sacramento is not a local warehouse. We will see.... But they had non Boxster Pilkington and PPG glass in the shop. First time I paid attention to a company called Pilkington.
  4. I have not looked at the 2007 order guides, but Cayman/987 people are also saying the sport shifter is off their order guides this year and would be a dealer installed part. Strange.
  5. 2 way to push the pistons back in.
  6. Now you tell me. I replaced the switch in December. But I did not have the same problem. I'll take a look at the old switch to see if I can bring it back to life.
  7. I have had my 986 for 7 years and the only times it was been at the local dealer was for smog inspections. Porsche can't force you to use their dealers to service the car. Years ago the service writer said to keep receipts for the work us local owners were doing, like oil and filter changes. But, when you need "goodwill" from Porsche you may have problems if you did not patronize their dealers. Not up on the 987 - didn't know it had a service reminder. The 986 didn't. I'll ask if there is something to reset it other than the Porsche PIWIS.
  8. When using the Motive I do not hold the clutch pedal down. But if you do, I think you need to pull the pedal up by hand. The shop manual says to hold the pedal down, but we have never done it that way. I think you would need to do this only if you were replacing the master or slave cylinders. This is what Peter told me a few years ago.
  9. If you pull the engine lid off a Box you will see the shift cables run from the side of the transmission up and over the engine and then to the inside of the car. No way to get a rod to do that.
  10. You need to drive a car that has one. Between Loren and I we have put in 100 of these things. Loren has one, I do not. Doesn't do anything for me. Does nothing for my driving skill, or lack thereof. I know only one local 996 owner, Colm, who did not like the B&M unit. He ended up swapping his B&M for the stock shift from another local 996 owner. The rest of our local owners like it.
  11. This forward and backward movement is normal. The engine and transmission are bolted together and the unit is mounted in rubber. When you get on and off the gas the unit moves a bit. The transmission is connected to the shift lever via very long cables, so the lever moves a bit when the unit moves. You don't get this on other cars because the shift lever goes directly to the transmission.
  12. So am I. I should have put the lemon on the speed yellow car, not the potato. The color is all wrong.
  13. This does not cost much....
  14. Good. I do not know what the bolts are made of, but they are not magnetic. Avoid dropping them inside the top cavity when putting them or you will spend all day trying to fish them out.
  15. Thought this subject was covered on rennlist over the past few days. So why again??? But, just for grins, and all you folks.... 1997 Boxster with 61,041 miles on the original engine. 265 engine operating hours per the DME that was replaced last year. 2,109 air bag hours on the original control unit. You should not mix operating hours with mileage or an engine replacement, or it will make you sick.
  16. There is no trick to this. You need brute force to separate the joints. The black pushrods open and close the clamshell. When the clamshell is closed the sping loaded pushrods are under a great deal of force, holding the clamshell down very tight so the soft top does not rattle around. When the clamshell is open a few inches there is no tension on the push rods and you can disconnect them from the male ball joint on the V-lever by hand. Get a pry bar or a long thick screwdriver and try to separate it. Watch out for yourself when the joint separates.

  18. Do you for sure have both horn wires hooked up? Pull the air bag and take a picture.
  19. Don't remember. I think it is this company. http://www.simplicity.elitecaraudio.org/photo3.html If so, they moved to San Jose where I live. They had a lot more pictures of the speed yellow Boxster that are not on their site.
  20. That is his car on the FVD site. Luis is a nice guy. I'll bump into him around town sooner or later. 2 more pics from the body shop.
  21. Get it from Badcow! We need to recycle Audi black plastic. The kit for the style he has is 000 044 801 91. Not included in the kit is a trim piece. Your standard black plastic trim piece is 996 552 339 00 01C.
  22. Here you go....
  23. There are 2 sets of alignment marks on the front of the transmission, which are not mentioned in the shop manual. We tried using them years ago but Mark has his own way of timing the transmissions. I asked one of the mechanics at the local dealer, but forgot what he said. Guess I may have to figure it out because I need to time my transmissions.
  24. Your part number comes back to a 2001 up 996 and will not work on your car. The remote for a 1997 986 is 986 637 243 01. The alarm for a 1997 is different than the alarm used in 1998-2000, so you must get a 1997 remote and it must have the 24 digit paper tag to code it to your car.
