  1. Already tried the cruise control connector, and the pot needs a different connector.
  2. Almost a year since the 997/Cayenne style seal has been out. I asked one of the service guys how it was holding up and he made it sound good. But I would rather ask the mechanics. I have only mentioned this seal once to Peter over the past few months. And he told me about a mechanic who put the seal in backwards. And someone told me about another mechanic did not use the green installation ring. As for getting another engine, this is up to Atlanta. We have a local Boxster owner who had 5 replacement seals, the last 2 after the warranty expired. This was before the Cayenne style seal came out. His crank was within specs each time. Porsche finally gave up and put in another engine. Then another and another, but that is another story.
  3. The wiper relay in my 1997 just gave up the ghost. Since I have to buy another relay I might as well get the one used on the 996/Boxster S and do Dr. Felker's hack. Plus my parts department has the potentiometer and 996 relay in stock. The pot needs a 4 pin male connector. There are several pictures of this connector on Dr. Felker's site but no part number is listed. Also need the pins that fit this connector. Anyone with part numbers? Loren has a 996 so he pulled the connector and sent me a picture. Looks like it is also used by Mercedes. The second picture is from Dr. Felker's site and it shows a connector inserted in the back of the pot.

  5. If you had asked me a few years ago I might have known the answer. I had funny things going on with the hazzard lights and turn signals. They are tied together. Now I don't remember. I spoke to Peter and ended up replacing some bulbs and the hazzard switch. I would find another car and swap the flasher relay and see if that is the problem. It is the one with the yellow arrow.
  6. Hook it back on the 3 allen bolts.
  7. From your link it looks to be a Kreissieg exhaust. Sounds good. http://www.kreissieg-usa.com/index.php Called F1 Valvetronic. There are valves so that you can bypass the catalytic converters/mufflers, and a dash switch. If I am reading the info correctly. Also have to sign a smog waiver. But at $5,500.... Eisenmann made the 986 1997-2002 and 2003-2004 sport exhaust used by Porsche. Don't know who Porsche is using for the 987.

  9. Can you save your old Pilkington windshield for me? Might need it someday. 2 days after windshield #3 was put in and on the way back from Laguna Seca, a truck on the freeway threw a rock that hit really hard. Can't believe the new windshield didn't crack. The B&M short shifter vs. the Porsche clone is a good analogy. I could have had the shop buy the Sekurit glass from the Porsche dealer if I really wanted the Porsche logo. Instead, I saved $160 on the cost of the glass. At the rate I'm going I think I'm going to try PPG or Pilkington next, as those brands cost less than Sekurit. Or, maybe a lexan windshield.
  10. Here are instructions for an older Boxster. http://www.johnfelker.com/pot/potinstnew.html He says 3 and 4 are for illumination and 4 goes to any brown wire. Solid brown is usually ground. For 3 I can't remember if the color coding changed in the newer cars. Also, I see to remember that when you hook up 3 to a wire going to another switch that you should not use a switch that has an LED indicator, like the PSM switch. I think Sandy covered this subject in the 996 section when trying to illuminate a spoiler or some other switch.
  11. That was easy. The black rubber tube and black plastic adapter should have been in a plastic bag stuck to the battery, but sometimes the bag gets lost. This is an Interstate. You can see the black tube to the left of the red plastic terminal cap. You can't really see the black plastic adapter because the cable is in the way, but it you follow the black tube you can see it is connected to the clear plastic tube in the car.
  12. Not following this. The Interstate batteries I have seen in Boxsters came with a vent tube adapter that looks like this, so you can connect to the clear plastic tubing in the car. If you do not have this part and you have a vent tube in the middle rear of the battery then go back where you got the battery and get one.
  13. Rattle in front....
  14. I guess it would depend on which interstate battery you have. Does your battery have a provision for a vent tube?
  15. Do you have oil in the coolant tank in the rear trunk?
  16. There is a tequipment kit that has 4 locking bolts with the key, and 16 non locking bolts. But this kit also has 5 mm spacers. Otherwise, you have to buy the locking bolts which are sold as a set of 4 with the key, and 16 non locking bolts. Or, forget the locking bolts and buy 20 non locking bolts. I do not know of any other way unless you find someting on ebay. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=8494
  17. MOST started in model year 2003 on both the 996/986. A changer from a pre MOST 996 will be a Becker 2660 or Porsche CDC-3. They are the same. If this is on ebay see if it has the cable from the radio head to the changer or you will have to buy it and it is not cheap.
  18. You do not have enough digits in your part number. I see a 996 641 108 01 70C in the ROW parts list. It is for a 1998-1999 C2 GB car. If this is the one you are looking at then I think it will work in your Boxster. But I do not know any UK people who have done this conversion, just US people. Verify the info with the seller as to what car the cluster came from. And watch out for used clusters on ebay as they may be defective.
  19. That is an old style 996 RHD cluster for a tiptronic, if your Boxster has a tip. You can get it to work on your model year 2000 if the 996 cluster came from a C2. If you do not have a tip then the gear lights will not work. I thought you wanted to replace just the faces, not put in a 996 cluster.
  20. Need to see a picture to be sure.
  21. When the instrument cluster changed starting in model year 2001 so did the faces for the gauges. You cannot use the faces for a 2001-2004 on a 1997-2000. Don't know what your part number is.
  22. Mechanics don't go to the front parts counter where the customers are to get parts. There is a "back" parts counter just for the mechanics, at least at my dealer. The back guy is the best parts guy that knows his stuff. When I have a problem or a question about a part that the front guy does not know about, I go to the back guy in the service area. And, it was cheaper to buy the switch from Porsche rather than VW/Audi.
  23. The switch for my 1997 has been replaced twice by the dealer, so I have not had the pleasure of standing on my head under the dash. First around 1998 under warranty. Warranty back then was 2 years. Then again in 1999 after the warranty expired there was a recall for just a few 1997 Boxsters, about 3,200 cars. Never understood why all 986/996s have not recalled as that VW/Audi switch has been a problem until 2003 when Porsche stopped using it. There have been 4 versions of the switch. Go on an Audi board and they have the same problem. Peter Smith says he can do it in 5 minutes. I think the shop rate at my dealer is about $155, but this is Silicon Valley. I have never asked what they charge. They remove the air duct and go under the dash. If the red paint was gone then yours was probably replaced before. When a switch is replaced they do not put red paint back on. I am supprised your dealer had the switch unless they are also a VW/Audi dealer. When Porsche pulled the part my parts department started selling a made in China switch, that had more problems then the German switch. When a switch fails it can do many funky things. The mechanics gave me 2 bad switchs and I took 1 apart. There is a picture of it around here. A piece of plastic broke off inside and it was hard to turn. I have not taken the other one apart yet but it is easy to turn, so something else must be wrong.
