  1. I do not think this has been covered before, and I have not done it. Remove the battery and the 4 nuts for the battery tray. This much I have done. The pump is under the battery tray. First picture is my car from a few years ago when I looked to see what was under the battery tray. You need to unscrew a plastic locking ring to get the pump out of the tank. The tool is a VW tool but if you are creative I bet you can remove the locking ring. This picture and the last picture were taken at my dealer last year after a fuel pump was removed, I think to replace the sender unit.
  2. I did look in the front trunk of the 2007 987 and it looked no different than a 2006 987 or Cayman, so I did not take a picture. I think your picture is a euro 997 something. C4 I would guess, but I have never seen a ROW car.
  3. The cluster for a 1997-2000 is different than 2001-2004, what I call the old and new style. You can't even plug in the wrong style cluster as the 3 connectors on the back are physically different. The wiring harness is also different. The was a guy on another board who claimed he knew someone who know someone who did this swap. I don't believe it as that would be quite a job.
  4. Might try a stereo shop as I have seen universal keys.
  5. I would normally say to make sure the cruise control conntector is plugged in, but you say you checked. Next would be the switch on the end of the stalk. I think Richard Hamilton can tell you how to check the switch. Check to see that all the wires on the clutch pedal switches are connected. The only other thing I can suggest is to put your old 3 stalk/switch assembly back in and see if it works.
  6. When you push the switch at the end of the cruise control stalk does the green indicator light in the instrument cluster come on?
  7. 986 551 433 00 01C and 986 551 434 01C.
  8. Did you plug in the connector to the cruise control stalk?
  9. Here is another "what is it" thread on the UK board boxa.net. http://www.boxa.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=24258 ---To quote epod from the London area: "Can anybody tell me what this wire is for? Noticed it hanging down from underneath the front bumper. It is quite fine gauge with grey insulation and a short rubber sleeve on the end which seems to have a sealed end, although that could be as a result of it dragging along the road, until I wedged it up inside. It not from the pointy thing (temp sensor ?) that sticks out through the front grille. Everything seems to be working OK, including the alarm. Should I be worried ?" ---End of quote from epod. About all I can tell you about the above, is that I do not see a yellow rectangle in epod's picture, shown below....
  10. That is the air bag control unit. Leave it just like you left it. Don't hit it with a hammer. And all those wires will not bother you.
  11. The part number for 2003-2004 kit is listed in the TSB section of this board and as a contributing member you can look at the TSB yourself. It is the same part number for the kit you and I have. I think Loren also has the TSB for the original "weird looking" 1997-2002 version listed. You are not the only one to say the original version is weird looking. I remember when original version first came out about 6 years ago. It was sort of weird looking but I guess I got use to it over the years.
  12. That is the part number for the kit sold in the US. Do not know of a different number for ROW.
  13. Not far from the San Jose Arena, or whatever it is called these days. You can also see Peter Smith at Rector if it is something not easy to figure out. He and other mechanics taught me what little I know. If you have a bad top motor I have in the back of my mind that Mark may have an extra one, but you will have to check with him.
  14. I think what was being talked about above is what my finger is pointing to, a nut with a set screw. If you turn that screw you can move the clamshell up and down a bit.
  15. I can't see how it would matter, but we used the wire as it runs from the connector to the front of the car. Like in this picture as an example from when I put in air horns. The red wire is for the air horn compressor. I removed the horn wire from the connector and soldered the red wire to it. Put the pin back in the connector and now I had 2 wires combined. Easy when you have the correct pin removal tool. You need to combine 2 wires together like I did. If you do it like this then keep in mind the connector has a secondary lock which needs to be slid over before you can remove the pin.
  16. Do not know, as for a 2002 up we do what porsche says, which is to hook up the white wire from the control unit to a white wire with a black stripe in the white 21 pin connector next to the brake booster. The white wire with the black stripe is the high beam wire. Two things to consider. The white 21 pin connector has several wires. You want the white wire with the black stripe. But there is also a black wire with a white stripe. It is hard to tell the difference. One is fatter than the other, but I forget if you want the thin or fat wire. The wire you want is in hole #2. If you mount the control unit on the passenger side then the white wire from the control unit is too short to go over to the white connector, so you have to add a lenght of wire to get over there. Or, you can mount the control unit in the brake booster area so you do not have to make the white wire from the control unit longer. Here is a not too good picture of the wire in the white connector you want. The wire has been removed from the connector.
  17. The black connector on the passenger side went away in model year 2002. You now hook up to a white 21 pin connector next to the brake booster.
  18. When I have looked at a Cayman/987 mufflers I see an integrated unit that is also the catalytic convertor. The cat and muffler are a single part. The parts list has just a single part number. Here is a picture of a 987 exhaust. So, I do not know how you can do what you want without cutting something. But you could do this on a 986.
  19. The current VW part number is 3 B0 955 531 - VW use to have a different part number. On ebay there was a wrecking yard selling a bunch of used relays for $9 each. I asked the seller if he had this relay and he said he would look at a car, but he needed me to tell him what VW model and I was not positive which VW models came with this relay. I've heard Rabbit, Golf, and Jetta. One of the local VW places said 1984-1993 Rabbit when I asked what car used this relay. According to the UK message boards Bosch also has a relay that does the same thing. For all I know Bosch makes the VW relay. Bosch is 0 986 335 058. Bosch calls their relay easytronic. I had no luck finding the Bosch version with a google search, but did find one on non USA ebay.
  20. The rear set of cats is supposed to clean up what is leftover from the front cats. The use of 4 cats started in 2000. 1997-1999 only had 2 cats. A local 2000 owner recently put in the factory sport exhaust, but he want even more sound. He is going to remove the rear cats and put in a "test pipe" to see if the elimination of the rear cats improves the sound. Where we live smog inspections on used cars are every 2 years and he just had the inspection. Plus the inspector did not look under the car. On a new car I don't think you need an inspection until the car is something like 4 years old. I have never seen a 987 muffler/cat cut open.
  21. I'm a Boxstir guy so I pay just a little attention. 5 months a go I saw a 997 S engine being replaced. The mechanic said it had broken piston rings. I think he said it was just one cylinder. I guess if just one bank is burning oil then you are going to have more soot in the tail pipe for that bank.
  22. I do not know what is the problem with your top operation. I have not dealt with electrical issues, mostly mechanical. If you and Mark can come by my office in San Jose then we can take a look at our car. Mark knows much more than me about the top operation.
  23. Saw my first 2007 Boxster today. Tank in the trunk is gone. I assume it is now like a Cayman. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10979
  24. Saw my first 2007 Boxster S 3.4 today at the local dealer. For contributing members you can see the bulletin issued on August 2, 2006, which states that: "Effective immediately, option XCZ - Sport Shifter, is no longer available for factory installation." But then the bulletin goes on to state that the short shift will continue to be available as a Tequipment part. But, the sport/short shift was listed on the sticker as a $765 option. I sat in the car and played around with the shift lever. It was a short shift. Then I looked at the sticker for the build month, which was July, so this car got built just under the wire. The coolant tank in the rear trunk is gone. It is now like a Cayman with fill ports. The dealer did not have any 2007 base Boxsters for me to look at.
  25. Various terminals I ordered have showed up. This one looks to be the female terminal needed for pin #1 on the 996 relay since it fits the smaller pin on the relay. The only way for me to know for sure is to pull the relay tray out to see if I can plug the terminal into the back of the wiper relay plug.
