  2. Met David today, and it was bent sheet metal on the passenger side transmission. Therefore the transmission was not vertical, but on an angle. Due to this angle you cannot get to the top 13 mm nut with a standard socket or a standard combination wrench, and those were the only tools we had in my office parking lot. The driver's side transmission was fine and it came right out.
  3. Not sure what is going on. There are 3 nuts that hold the transmission to the body of the car. Remove those nuts and the transmission pulls away from the 3 mounting studs. You can if you want then unscrew the 3 mounting studs. Sounds like the sheet metal is bent if one transmission is not flush when bolted in. I used German Auto Body when my car got hit. The new style transmission started for model year 2000. If you put in this transmission then you need the mounting studs. The mounting studs for the old and new style transmissions are different.

  6. The policy varies from dealer to dealer. Some dealers will give you nothing even if you are the current owner. Some want written permission from the former owner. Some will give you nothing even if you are the current owner and have the permission from the former owner - their attitude is an invoice was given to the then owner at the time the work was done and they are not going to do anything more than that. Your local dealer can only tell you what service work (like an oil change) if it was done at that dealer. Service work done by other dealers is not shared on a central data base, only the servicing dealer's computer. Of course, no dealer has access to work done by an independent shop. Recall, service actions, and warranty work is on a central data base. Any dealer can access that info even if the work was done by another dealer 3,000 miles away. My dealer did give out the info. Some time ago my friend was thinking of buying a used Boxster and with his VIN I was able to get this history (excluding service work perforned by other dealers). My dealership has since changed ownership so I will have to see if the policy has changed. The service guy who gave me the info still works there, so I will ask him if the policy has changed.
  7. I've been Boxstering since August 1999, back when 15W-50 was an approved oil. Back when that is what my dealer used. They leaked back then, just like they do now with 0W-40. It ain't the oil weight.

  11. The DME is not reset to zero - the DME is not replaced - when a new engine is put in. The info in the original DME continues on with the replacement engine.
  12. There is no source of engine oil in the front of the car, unless oil has mixed with coolant and the 3rd radiator has a leak. Look at Bentley and let us know what this turns out to be. My guess is power steering or brake fluid. Hard to guess over the internet....
  13. 99% sure you have a bad relay since my Boxster did the same thing. Look under the dash above the fuse box. The wiper relay is the tallest relay. It is blue. It does not interchange with the other relays. If you remove the relay you can still use the wipers. They will turn on and off with the stalk, but the intermittent and park features will not work with the relay removed. In the picture the one on the left is a 996 relay, and the one on the right is a non S Boxster.
  14. Remove the cover for the battery. On the drivers side next to the battery you will see a round horn. This is the alarm horn. Unplug the connector to the alarm horn. Go on a drive. If you hear the horn(s) then you know it is not the alarm horn.

  18. Well, those Kirkland folks must be driving Porches. Gilroy Costco. Both 47 (53.99) and 48 ($62.99) on the shelf. Santa Clara Costco still does not have a sticker for 48. There is a sticker for 47 but the shelf was empty. Update on Santa Clara/Coleman Avenue Costco. I was there yesterday, January 12, 2007, looking at tires for my truck. There was a sticker for the 48 and about 4 on the shelf. For the 47 there were about 5 on the shelf but no sticker. Some of the vent tubes in the plastic bags were missing.
  19. Time to bring this old thread back to life. I was at a local hardware store, looking at tools, and found 3" long T30 bits. It was an ACE hardware store but not all ACE stores stock the same stuff. They are now using them for screws. Two bits for $5.79. They are made in Taiwan, but they will work. http://www.grkfasteners.com This is the first time I have seen T30 bits longer than 2" at a local hardware store. My old 2 3/4" T30 is made by Hazet. I had to get it on the internet. It is now about $9 for that one bit.

  22. As stated above, the rule of thumb is the engine operating hours in the DME. I assume you are really in Germany. There are other checks/searches that can be in the US on the internet or at a Porsche delearship, but I have no clue about German cars. The original DME on my 1997 Boxster with 51,000 miles was replaced last year because it was defective. The defective DME had 1,622 operating hours. The new DME had zero operating hours when it was put in, so the rule of thumb does not work with my Box. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...4331&hl=DME

  24. Same problem with the door sill switch and the remote button? Each has a cable that pulls on the latch. Worse case, there is a cable for the emergency release under the left heat shield.
  25. A 3/8" socket fits better than a 10 mm metric socket. If the bolt head is not too buggered up get the correct E12 Torx and pound it on.
