  1. Need to wait until I get my hands on a B&M. I don't want to compare the 2 products until both are in my possession. So far I have not been able to talk to Alex for the original B&M. If there is a local owner with an uninstalled B&M then contact me so I can take pictures and measurements. In the meantime, I did a review over 3 years ago of the B&M and the Porsche clone that you can review. The Porsche clone is in the below pic.
  2. Once an instrument cluster has 62 or more miles on the odometer it is locked and a dealer cannot change it with the PST2/PIWIS. Why 62 miles, because it is about 100 of those funny German metric miles and 100 is a lucky number in Germany. But, like Richard said, there are "mileage correction" people out there in the aftermarket who can do it. As for that ebay cluster. The seller has a 2003 base, so I assume he paid for an S cluster because he wanted the silver gauges. Said it was done by a Porsche dealer. Said he drove 30 miles after the cluster replacement. Drove 30 miles after what, is the question I would have asked the seller. Drove 30 miles on a new S cluster with 0 miles on the new cluster, put into a 2003 vehicle. That is called odometer fraud. More likely, the dealer put in the correct mileage in the new cluster and the seller has XXX miles plus 30. But you never know with something on ebay....

  4. I just looked at several clones on ebay from different sellers, and with one exception the lever is backwards. On the ebay pic clone below the bend of the lever is correct, to the right. The rest of the ebay pictures from the other sellers were backwards. Alex said I could borrow an uninstalled B&M for the comparison, but he has not called me back.
  5. That is a new style cluster and your 2001 is a new style cluster car. My only question when having a pre-MOST cluster car was if the cluster would work on a post-MOST cluster car due to the radio code. Not an issue for you as your 2001 radio has a user code and your radio is pre-MOST. Plug it in and find out. He does not say what the miles displayed are so you might have to change it.
  6. Starting for model year 2002 the 986 came out with a middle display that was dot matrix, but only if the car came with the OBC option. With this display you can have more lines of info. The other 2 displays on a dot matrix cluster are segmented. First time I saw this type of display was on the 2001 turbo. Then the 996 and 986 got it in 2002 but only if the car came with the OBC option. So, as of Boxster model year 2002 if you did not have the OBC option then the middle display was segmented, not dot matrix. If you look at the 2002 up 986 parts list it will tell you if the middle display is segmented or dot matrix due to the OBC option code 659. You cannot take a segmented display and turn it into a dot matrix display. You would need to replace the non-OBC cluster for a 2002-2004 OBC cluster, and that is expensive. If you do the OBC retrofit on a 2002-2004 986 then the middle display looks like a 2001 986 with the OBC option, which has a segmented middle display. I know this is confusing, and don't quote me as I am trying to remember the changes....
  7. I bought and just received the blue knock-off from ebay. The bidding starts at $55, or you can buy it now for $60. Shipping is $9. The shift lever is in fact 180 degrees reversed in the blue housing. It is the first thing you notice when you pull it out of the box, after having seen and installed a number of B&Ms. I do not like the fit of one of the plastic inserts. I am trying to borrow an uninstalled B&M still in the box so that I can put them side-by-side for a comparison.

  10. I don't know the new cars, but I thought if you had PCM you could turn it off, and if you did not then the PIWIS could. There was a question here a few months ago I think, or on rennlist.
  11. The 986 cluster does not have volt and oil pressure gauges, but the 996 cluster does. On my Toyota I did not even have a tach, but now I do.
  12. And I'm proud of my Toyota instrument cluster swap that I did a few days ago. :huh: I have owned this pickup for 18 years. It came with no tach, or volt or oil pressure gauges. I got another cluster from an SR5 truck and put it in. Had to run a wire from the coil to the cluster so that the tach would work. Then removed the sender for the oil pressure idiot light and put in the sender that is used for the gauge. Didn't have to run an extra wire for the gauge sender because Toyota uses 1 wire with and without the gauge. The volt meter just worked when I pluged in the SR5 cluster. But the instrument clusters are the same size, so no dash modifications are needed. This picture is at a weird angle, both clusters are the same size.
  13. One of the local owners, Larry with a 2000 3.4 engine conversion (aka Monster Boxster), has a 996 cluster and the 986 surround was cut. It was a good tight fit with no gaps. I asked Larry but he did not do it. I assume it was done by Tim Benson, the mechanic that did the engine swap. When I was going to do this I contacted a non-local owner who had done it. He said he used a dremel. The plastic that needs to be cut is thin and easy to cut.
  14. One guy's subjective post on a message board does not mean much to me. People have also said there were the same problems with their B&M installs. I was not there when it was put in and adjusted. For example, most people try to adjust the set screw when it is bolted in the car - I never do it this way. Maybe the guy screwed up with the first install. Maybe he did not adjust it properly. I bet the only install he ever did was just one car, his. Also, I am not impressed by price. When Porsche came out with a 996 short shift people were saying how much better it was than the B&M. Turned out they were identical except for the color. You could buy a B&M for $200 or the Porsche version for $760. People think if they pay more it is a better product, but this is not always the case. Loren and I have put a 100 plus B&M units over the years. It will not be hard to tell if this $55 ebay special is inferior. To date the only objective messages I have seen is that the shift lever on the special is installed "backwards," but that is easy to fix. Stay tuned for the review....
  15. Porsche uses the words cover and cover lower part. I use the words cap and surround, like you see in the Boxster picture. When I started this project years ago the best I could figure out is that on the 996 the cap and surround were under a single part number. On the 986 they are 2 part numbers. I thought this was strange. I did not order the 996 part so I do not know for sure. This would have been expensive for me because I have Boxster red leather. Why not cut the 986 surround to fit the 2 extra gauges?   16. 2002 is the new style cluster and 1999 is the old style. They do not interchange. The change from the old to new styles was model year 2002 on the 996.
  17. We don't have the alarm siren and tilt sensor on North America cars. One of these days I'm going to see if it can retrofit it.

The lowest price that I was able to find on US ebay has a starting bid of $55 or a buy it now price of $60. I bought one a few days ago but do not have it yet. Had to pay $57 because someone bid against me. When I get it I am going to borrow an uninstalled B&M, still in the box. I am going to put both units side-by-side and compare them, and take pictures.
  19. I don't think that one has a set screw. Unclip the boot and look under the knob to be sure. Grab the knob and twist it hard to the left and then hard to the right. You want to expand the plastic sleeve that holds it on the metal shaft. Then pull hard. If it does not pull off, then pull harder. You are not going to break anything by pulling as hard as you can.
  20. This is out of my area but I know a little. An oxygen sensor is like a small battery. It sends out voltage. My old Fiat pre ODBII had a single oxygen sensor. I use to test it per the shop manual with a volt meter. I would rev up the engine and watch the volt meter needle swing. It would read up to something like 1 volt. Every 2 years for the Boxster I have to do a smog test and for 3 tests I had to replace the right rear oxygen sensor. I told Peter Smith I was tired of it and was going to remove the sensor and hook up a battery to the oxygen sensor wires to pass the test. I guess the simulator link does something like this. If you applied the correct voltage it would trick the DME into thnking the voltage was coming from an oxygen sensor.
  21. No clue. All I can tell you is my windshield #2 did not have the green band. Either the body shop or my local dealer screwed up and got euro glass when #2 was put in. I liked it without the band. But I am now on windshield #3 and it has the band. Pic is #2 that did not have the band.
  22. We put a new console in a GT2. Had to remove the lid and lock from the old console to put in the new. Was a long time ago so I do not remember the details. I remember a lot of screws and clips. Since this was a 996 we had to figure out the spring and stay for the lid, but a Boxster does not have this.
  23. Peter thought there were 2 force levels. If you are belted it fires with X force. If you are not belted in the it fires with more than X force. What I cannot remember is if this force changes with the air bag light on. Just because there is a TSB does not mean a recall. Take the ignition switch. The only TSB was when Porsche abandoned the old design. There is no TSB to tell the mechanic how to replace the old style defective switch - the mechanic is supposed to know how to replace a switch. Same thing for the plastic tank - no TSB. There were actually several TSBs for the air bag light - 3 I seem to remember.
