  1. If you have an aftermarket battery with a vent then you may be missing the adapter. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...mp;hl=vent+tube
  2. I have not remove it. I talked to a mechanic that has and he said it is a bit of a pain.
  3. On the idle issue my guess is the idle stabilizer valve. On a non-egas there is a valve that moves to stablilize the idle. Over time carbon gets in this valve and it does not move freely. The valve is attached to the throttle body. You remove it and clean it with carb cleaner. This is it on a non-egas 996.
  4. Sounds like you have a bad/dead battery. There is no dead battery warning light. If you have a charger charge the battery then go to an auto parts place and have the battery tested.
  5. The arm and a leg place.....
  6. After you disconnect a battery and then reconnect a battery you need to reset the windows with the switches. Covered in the owners manual. I just run them up and down a few times using the switches. I do not do it the way the manual says. If you cannot find your radio code then provide the radio serial number and we can guess at it.
  7. The UK guys are starting to use the knock-off. http://www.boxa.net/forum/index.php?showto...mp;#entry292467 And making bushings. Pic from Tony Daniel.
  8. I don't know where to start but maybe this will help. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=12780
  9. This is a problem on the early cars. There is an electrical switch on the latch. That switch is for the trunk light and alarm. Porsche changed the design some years ago. You use to be able to buy just the switch but I have not looked it up recently. Get a screwdriver and operate the latch. Lock it and unlock it a bunch of times and see if it works. This may improve the electrical contact of the switch.
  10. Not sure what that means. When the new Boxster came out Peter Smith put on a tech session and told us all the fancy things that the then new PIWIS could do. I was not paying much attention since I cannot afford one. I am almost positive the PIWIS can be hooked up to your car and the tech folks in Atlanta can see what it is doing. I also remember something about it being wireless. If you have a specific question I can ask Peter next time I speak to him. If you have about $20,000 burning a hole in your pocket you can buy a PIWIS on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...p;rd=1&rd=1
  11. The PIWIS came out about 2 years ago. It is the replacement for the PST2. A PST2 will not work on 2005 up. An independent shop can buy a PIWIS just like they were able to buy a PST2 but it is very expensive. 2 local independent shops I know have a PST2. I doubt they will be in the market soon for a PIWIS because it is so expensive and the new cars are still under warranty. Porsche started phasing out paper publications some years ago.
  12. Replace the switch. Part number 996 613 112 01. Then report back.
  13. In your picture the container on the right with the silver top in 15W-50 is not something that I have seen on store shelves. Guess that is why it says New! On the Mobil 1 site it says back by popular demand. http://mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oil..._1_15W-50_.aspx The silver top was for a different weight oil. The original original 15W-50 had a red top. But then Mobil likes to change containers from time time. I am now an EP man. Cost more than the standard Mobil 1, but I spare no expense on the Boxstir. And my 1997 needs all the SuperSyn I can get. When Mobil 1 introducted their product in the 1970s for automotive purposes it was advertised for use up to 25,000 miles. Here is a print ad. Wonder if I will still own my 1997 Boxster 25,000 miles from now....
  14. Have you again ruled out the switch? Start the car with the lever pulled up. The idiot/warning light should stay on with the engine running.
  15. With a radio serial number that ends in 5043 the junk decoder says the code is 5497. Based on the link if 5497 does not work then you try 5498 and if it does not work then 5499. I have not looked at the radio owners manual in a long time but I think if you enter random codes or the wrong code 3 times in a row then you get locked out for a while. If you get your radio to work then let us know the code that worked.
  16. For your year it is like this. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...entry8128 If your outside temp display is on then the OBC is already on, but you can only see the temp until you do the retrofit. If your OBC is not on then someone with a PST2/PIWIS will have to turn it on.
  17. I would suggest that you not spend any more time or money on trim parts until you can get that 996 cluster working on your Boxster. You are going from a 2001 Boxster to a 2002 996 cluster with unknown specifications. I do not know anyone who has updated like this.
  18. That is the way I wanted to do it. But I have Boxster red leather. And I could not find a 996 surround and cover in Boxster red that would not have cost an arm and leg. Loren has a 996 with Boxster red interior but he would not let me near his car. Black will be easier to find. So I decided to cut my surround to fit the 996 cluster. In the picture I have the 996 cluster face next to my Boxster surround/cover to figure out where to cut. There are actally lines that you can follow. But then I thought maybe I should first make sure the 996 ebay cluster worked, and that is when I found out the middle LCD display was defective. End of project. If you look at Whall's pictures I can tell that he cut his Boxster surround.
  19. 996 surround does not work with a Boxster instrument cluster cover.
  20. This is also what Peter Smith told me. If you get a used DME from a Boxster with a matching part number then you overwrite the Boxster program with the 996 program. But you also need the immobilizer code from the donor Boxster. I believe you get this from PCNA using the VIN from the donor. Peter has done this in the past with a PST2. He mentioned there might be some issue using the PIWIS to do this, but I forget.
  21. Ray Robles is the name I could not remember. One of our local guys (Raman) bought a use Boxster S cluster for the silver gauges to put in a base Boxster. I tested that cluster before it was put in and it worked. Another local guy (Henry) bought some interior parts and had no problems. This was a few years ago. I had also contacted Ray back then when I was trying to do my 996 cluster swap, for the 996 surround and dash cap. Hope it works. Ask Ray to keep an eye out for a 1999-2001 cluster with manual transmission for me.
  22. The knob shafts on the new style cluster are plastic and they break off if you hit the knob hard enough. Porsche does not sell the shaft. If that cluster checks out then you would have to take the shaft out of your cluster. If you plug the cluster into the correct year car the mileage on the cluster will be displayed. I guess the $45 deal is to send it to a speedometer shop to check the mileage, but why if your are going to have it changed. Watch out for used clusters on ebay. There are defective ones out there. Some were warranty replacements that were supposed to be destroyed, but they show up on ebay. Whall was smart and saw the cluster in action before he bought it. If you talk to the seller in Pamona let me know his name. There is a guy in Southern California that was selling good used parts, but I forget his name. If it is the same guy some of the local owners bought parts from him and the parts were good.
  23. There are a few candidates on ebay, starting at $99.99. But you would need to verify the application and condition. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSCHE-CLU...sspagenameZWDVW http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/PORSCHE-INS...sspagenameZWDVW
  24. Prices have gone up I see. Not up on this stuff anymore. When Raggtop started years ago there was just the cleaner and the spray. Now they have all kinds of stuff. In the olden days people were using 3M Scotchguard as an inexpensive alternative. Someone gave me a can of it but I never used it. In fact, both of my cans are so old they cannot be California VOC compliant. Because of out goofy laws 3M reformulated years ago, and I lost track of why it fell out of favor. BMW also sold a product that you brushed on, that Boxster owners were using. No clue what happened to that. Blue Coral http://www.bluecoral.com/ made a product to clean the top, and another product to protect it. I have the product somewhere in my garage - used it once. Then there was Bio 303 or something like that name. As I said, there are lots of products. Or you can use Wack.... The UK owners are smart. They use the stuff you would put on a pup tent.
  25. Porsche recently switched vendors. Mahle is out. Hengst is in. Anyone remember Frantz oil filters that used a roll of toilet paper? Got me thinking. The TP filter, named after me.
