  1. Don't know what is wrong with your steering. When it is low it makes a groaning sound, usually when cold and then the sound goes away as the engine heats up. If you need more you can use the stuff in the silver or green can.
  2. One side is operating and the other side is not. That is why things look cockeyed. This could be for several reasons. The only way to know for sure is to inspect the car. I contacted Mark and he said he would look at your car to determine what parts need to be replaced. I suggest that you not operate the top with the switch until fixed as it will just cause damage. You should go to the manual mode if you need to open and close the top.
  3. Not much in the way of tools are needed, so the tools will be there and a Motive. The brake flush can be done at the same time as Duster/Ray so that will save time. If you are using aftermarket rotors then paint the hats ahead of time. If you are using shims for the pads then get new shims unless you want to reuse the old ones. We reuse the sensors unless they are bad. Porsche says to replace the caliper bolts. We reuse the retaining pin, spring plate, and clip. You need 1 liter of brake fluid.
  4. For when the wife is with you....
  5. This is strange problem. Don't know why. But the horn is supposed to work with the key out. Also is supposed to work with the key turned on - but then that is the problem....
  6. The light will not go out until there is a speed signal. No speed signal until the car moves.
  7. The radio manual says that the waiting time is when the ignition and radio are switched on. After 3 wrong attempts with a code you get wait, and have to wait for 1 hour before trying a code again. But I remember from the old Becker board that if you enter the wrong code way too many times, then the radio has to be on continuously for 24 hours before you can try a code again. This is a problem as most owners will not want to leave the ignition on for 24 hourse. Horst of the Becker board said that they power up the radio on a test bench. At least that is what I remember from the old Becker board.
  8. Agree with the above. We have a local owner who use to disconnect the DME all the time to turn of the check engine light. It was easier for him to do it that way rather than disconnecting the battery. When my DME was replaced 2 years ago the battery was hooked up during the replacement.
  9. This is nothing new. This thing is supposed to trick the car computer into thing the engine is cold all the time so it will run a rich mixture, like a car does when it is cold until warmed up.
  10. Search under DSP as there are many messages. Here is one. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...3894&hl=DSP I am not the stereo guy. I think the problem is what you noted. 490 is an analog amp so it with not work with the DSP control unit as the unit is for a digital amp. 680 is the digital amp that goes with the DSP control unit. Here is an ebay picture of the DSP amp.
  11. DSP work with the digital amp. From my memory I think it is option 680.
  12. 5 speed is the same as the 6 speed except the 5 speed has the green platte. If you remove the green plate from a 5 speed housing then it is a 6 speed housing.
  13. I spoke to a mechanic briefly and hope I understood what he said. He said the cruise control will work even with a burned out indicator bulb. If the brake switch is bad the indicator light will still go on but you cannot set a speed. He said the most common problem is a bad switch on the end of the stalk, but I told him you ruled that out. Next is the control unit. Might be a silly question, but how do you know the cruise control is not working aside from the fact the green light does not come on?
  14. If it is like a 2003-2004 986 then there is no user code. There is a code in the radio that matches the code in the instrument cluster. If the codes don't match, such as when you replace a radio, then it will not work. To code the replacement radio you need to visit a dealer with a PIWIS. At least this is they way it had to be done with the 986 CDR-23.
  15. Never warmed up to the 996 Cab. Always called it a fat Boxster with jump seats in the back....
  16. Let me know where you park your car at night and I'll see if any of them fit....
  17. That is the new style. I do not know where you can buy an extra other than a dealer. As I said, the old style came from McGard but the parts guy said he gets the new style from Porsche. I'll ask around, but don't hold your breath.
  18. I guess a silicon grease. If you do it take pictures as I have not seen these O-rings. I have a January 1997 tank that I replaced. When I removed the bleed valve from the old tank there were no O-rings. But my car is so old I must have the first generation tank. Strange that you still have condensation. I would ask a mechanic at the dealer but last time I did he said to tighten the screws as that was the most common cause of condensation. You have a new cap that has been tested, You tightened the screws. I'm out of ideas.
  19. There is a black cap on the market. A local 996 owner ordered one from a dealer and he got a black cap. I thought it was aftermarket, but he said it came from a dealership. My local dealer still has blue caps on the shelf. I had the parts guy look up the part number and it still ends in 01. Then I looked at the new cars in the showroom and they had the 01 blue cap. Don't know what is going on with the black cap. Maybe VW recently switched to black....
  20. Porsche uses 2 styles of wheel locks. The new style started on the Cayenne, then went over to the 987/997. I call this the new style. Your 997 came with the new style. However, if these are Porsche wheel spacers, don't know if your spacers came with the old or new style. McGard makes the old style, but they are not listed on their site. The parts guy at my local dealer told me than when they order an old style wheel lock they actually order it from McGard. The new style is ordered from Porsche, but McGard could be making it as well for all I know. If your spacers have the old style then I do not know how or if you could order it from McGard. There were 30 different old style locks. The key came in a plastic bag with a white stidker on it. The sticker had 2 digits, which I guess is something like a part number. Some time ago someone on a message board said they were able to buy the old style from McGard. This is the new style.
  21. Did you check for rattle in the front trunk....
  22. That hole is a drain so that can't be cause of the condensation. Tighten the 8 screws for the bleed valve. Snug them up by hand. Do not crank on them or they will snap as they are so small.
  23. Here is something on the brake switch. http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.a...7-5EF3E89AA5D4}
  24. Need to see a picture of the wheel lock/key.
  25. You can test the switch on the end of the stalk. I just did it with an ohm meter and an extra 4 stalk switch assembly I have. With a thin blade you pry on the end of the end of the cover and the cover pops off. You will see a white and black wire going to the switch. The switch is off when it sticks out and on when it is pushed in. I got a closed circuit reading on my meter when I pressed the switch in. The wires are very close together so make sure your meter probes are not touching each other. The only reason I asked it you had the 4 stalk was in case you had a bad cruise control switch and had to replace the entire assembly. Someone would want an old 4 stalk unit in order to get the OBC stalk for an OBC retrofit.
