  1. I trust you have tried using a spare battery on the jumper thing in the fuse box. Some people have tried this without luck. I have a feeling they are not getting a good ground by using the door striker like it says to use in the owners manual. Try again using the door stay for the ground.
  2. If you have a model year 2002 then it does not have bulbs.
  3. The red oval is the throttle body. 1997-1999 is non-egas. You can see the throttle cable in the picture. I was trying to keep it simple if there is room to remove just the idle valve from throttle body. Have not tried to do it this way on a Boxster, but it can be done this way on a non-egas 996. To clean inside the throttle body itself you need to remove the large tube that comes from the air box.

  5. Daryl80. In a prior post you said you have a 1997. Yellow arrow is to the idle control valve on my 1997. It is held in place to the throttle body with 2 bolts. I have not tried to do this on a Boxster whith the throttle body still connected. So give it a try and see if it works. Remove the 2 screws and the valve if there is room to do it this way. There is a round thing inside that is supposed to rotate. That thing stabilizes the idle. When carbon gets on it it does not rotate smoothly. Clean it.
  6. On the metal vs. plastic joint I can tell you what I know and then you decide. 6 plus years ago Scott Levy was trying to determine if there was an interest in metal joints. He is a 944 owner on the Pelican board, and now sells the joints. I talked to one of the mecahincs at my local dealer who had shown me how to fix tops about the metal joints. The plastic joint is designed to be a failure point in case something goes wrong with the top operation. That is why they are made of plastic. I went back and forth with Scott. Does the plastic become brittle with age/heat and break, or does something cause the plastic to break. It is the chicken or the egg debate. I do note that back then there was only the red plastic joint. The white ones did not exist back then. The reinforced cables for the old style transmission had just become available back then. And for all I know, it could be a combination of factors. I have worked on several cars over the years with broken red plastic joints. Each time something else in the top operation went wrong that caused the plastic to break. A few weeks ago someone on Renntech posted a picture of a bent pushrod with the metal joint. I think he is lucky that is all that got bent. You need to determine why the joints broke. I have no problem with using the metal joints, if everything else is in perfect condition. Porsche did switch to white plastic around 2002, so maybe Scott was right all along. Maybe one of these days a local owner will want to try them.
  7. Today, I tried one of the 12 extractors on an oxygen sensor connector. It worked. Not as nice as the tool the dealership has, but you can't beat the price. And it is easier than shoving paper clips or brass tubes or jewelers screwdrivers into the connector when you want to remove a pin.
  8. I will bring this back to life. I bought the Sir Tools 9025 - the swiss army knife thing with 12 tools. In the first picture is also the Sir Tools 9701 round pin tool (now discontinued) that I bought years ago, as a reference for the picture. The 9025 has 5 round pin extractors. I have not yet tried to use the 9025. There are different style connectors used by Porsche so I will have to see what style connectors are covered by the 12 extractors. However, the 12th is a joke - just a flat blade screwdriver bit. There is also a Sir Tools 9024. Same swiss army style but with 6 exactractors. The poor quality picture is from the internet as I do not have this tool. But I can see from the poor quality picture that at least some of the 6 extractors in 9024 are different or look different than 9025
  9. A 1997-2000 cluster will work in a 1999. The mileage is stored in the cluster. So if you plug in a used replacement cluster with X miles on that cluster, you will see X miles when that cluster is in the car. The cluster will simply work without any programing, but the mileage on the replacement cluster will not match the actual mileage of the car. 1997-1999 were the early cars. Only engine available was the 2.5. Some 1999s had sleeved engines, most of which failed long ago and were replaced.

  13. I bet the black PVC electrical tape is because you car had an air bag light fix.
  14. Both are oxygen sensors. The second one is to check the catalytic converter efficiency.
  15. What is see is mixed up pictures. The white connector is for an aftermarket rear speaker kit. The black plastic covered wires behind the passenger seat over to the center console are for the rear speakers. The 2 wire connector under the passenger seat is for the child seat air bag deactivation.
  16. 2.7 and 3.2 has 4 for the North American Market. ROW has 2, just before the muffler, like your picture. Our extra 2 cats are part of the exhaust manifolds. Like in this picture.

  18. I have not tried to remove that bolt so I do not know what the clearance issues are. If you have a 6 point socket for a ratchet wrench can you get that on the bolt head? If you are using an open end wrench/spanner. Then might also try a box/closed end wrench. Do not know what this is called in the UK.
  19. The horn next to the battery is for the alarm, and has nothing to do with the pair of horns under the front bumper cover that you hear when you press down on the steering wheel.
  20. Already covered, but the car is still in the transit mode, after all these years. About 2 months ago a local owner bought a 2001 Boxster and had the same issue with the lights. With a PST2 I put it in the handover mode, and all the lights then worked. What I do not get is how this step was missed during PDI when the car came off the truck, but it happens.
  21. The old battery was out about 15 minutes while Autozone rang up the new battery. I my 8 years I have had the battery out for the day. Like when I removed the battery tray. Like when I took it out to charge the battery on my work bench. At our work on cars we take the battery out for about 2 hours to install a cd changer. We also disconnect the battery for about an hour when we do the OBC retrofit. Never had your problem. Some owners remove their battery for the winter with no problems. Asked Peter Smith and he said having you ignition key on should not matter. He asked if you had e-gas and I told him no. The DME adapts in 5-10 minutes if codes have beeen cleared - but you did not do that. He wanted to know if it will not rev up while you are sitting still. He also suggested you disconnect the air flow sensor and see if it revs up. Most common cause for a hesitation at that rpm range is the air flow sensor.
  22. Very good. I have been waiting for someone to do this. Months ago I saw that LCD on ebay but it was only listed for Audi. Porsche uses a modified Audi display. I contacted the seller to find out if the seller knew if it would also work for a Boxster. Then the seller changed the listing to include the Boxster. On another Boxster message board 2 people bought it. One was afraid to try it. The other had some problems. MANUELL is gone.   23. I replaced the battery in my 1997 in the Autozone parking lot yesterday morning. Started the car and drove to work on the freeway. Car operated just like it did on the drive from my home to Autozone.
