  1. Pictures from the rear, using juniinc's picture as the 1st picture.
  2. When these Boxstir conversions show up on ebay some people make fun of them. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...790675&rd=1 If you look at the spy report of what a 2010 might look like on the cover of November Road & Track, it looks something like what these folks in Florida have been doing for a few years. http://www.markalexandermiller.com/TheCarF...y/new_stuff.htm It takes time and talent to do something like that. I will leave the taste up to you....
  3. Never seen that. Don't see how it could be a calibration issue since the needle is all over the place. When you say you replaced the instrument, does that mean you tried another instrument cluster and it is doing the same thing?
  4. Porsche recently switched from Mahle to Hengst so there is yet a new filter part number. Must be plenty of the Mahles still floating around because I recently saw a mechanic using it, rather than Hengst. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...20&start=20
  5. Where are you getting the tanks from? If it is an aftermarket tank who makes it?
  6. There is not much of a market for stolen amber headlights. But thieves are not always so smart. They want the ballast and bulbs for use on a non-Porsche. If you go on the Porsche message boards once in a while clear halogens get stolen - perhaps by "mistake" thinking they were xenons. I can usually tell a stolen litronic on ebay. The seller profile or description is clue one. Seller is selling litronics to upgrade - upgrade to what? If there are picture then sometimes I can see the chips and scratches from prying them out. And, of course, a Florida seller use to be a clue.... I bought 996 clear headlights on ebay 100 years ago. I will not buy stolen parts. The 996 car was being parted out after a wreck. If those headlights were stolen then the seller stole the whole car. He was selling the engine, transmission, and all other parts, including the brake pedal and seats.
  7. You know about this because you asked a question about the shape of the blanks. I thought what Clem-Clone did was clever. Don't know the year of his car but it has to be 2000-2001 due to the shape and finish of the blank he used. His blanks are the ones shaped like a switch, in gloss finish. http://www.986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11343 I have seen all sorts of aftermarket switches and indicators in the Boxster batwing. Yes, you do drill holes, but the batwing is not expensive to replace. If you really want to go crazy then you can buy the targa batwing which has 4 holes. This is a better picture showing the shape of the blanks, in gloss finish. Top one is shaped like a switch and the bottom one is flat.
  8. There are other places for oil to leak back there. Keep in mind Porsche has changed the design of the seal several time (4 times I recall) and Porsche has changed the installation tool about 3 times. The tool changed to change the depth of the seal inside the bore. Based on my failing memory the current version of the tool sets the seal a bit deeper into the bore. But then after the last version of this tool came out Porsche came out with the 4th generation seal, the one with the 997 part number. Then Porsche came out with insert for use with the tool. There are aftermarket tools, but I do not know how deep they set the seal. This guy did it without the tool. Note what he says. If you have replace other seals on other vehicles you push/tap them in until the are seated. There is no stop for the RMS seal. You can push it in too far. He set the seal flush. Also note this article is old as he used the 3rd generation seal. http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/996rms/rms4.php The current generation seal comes with a green plastic instillation ring. This ring helps you to slide the seal over the end of the crankshaft without damaging the lip of the seal. I spoke to Peter and there is no spec as to how deep to set the seal as that is determined by the tool. He guessed 5 mm. He also said the depth of the seal is not so important with the 4th generation seal as it was with the prior generations. Never replace the RMS myself, but watched them being replaced. Looks easy if you have the right tools.
  9. I am going to guess yes. There is a 986 owner on this board who put in the factory 987/987 short shift and used his 986 knob. In the picture on the top is a 997 shift, and a 986 shift on the bottom. You can see that the metal lever is the same. What is not going to fit is the boot.
  10. My message is 3 years old. Since then I have asked 2 other mechanics if you can use the jumper thing in the fuse box when the battery is disconnected or removed. They also said yes. The trunk release has its own circuit. Once in a while an owner will say it does not work. Once in a while an owner will say it does not work even if the battery is hooked up. I suspect the owners are not getting a good ground on the door striker.
  11. Per PET the 996 DME changed in 2002. I also noticed that PET has listed "control unit fuel pump" for a 2002 and up C4. That is something a Boxster does not have. It is not listed for a C2. I do not know what this control unit is. Might be the thing that calculates the fuel level on a 2002 up C4, and that is why there is no C2/C4 specific clusters for 2002 and up.
  12. This is why I have to ask people from the UK their model year. If I went down to my local California Porsche dealer today, in October 2007, and bought a 2008 model, it would be registered as a 2008 vehicle. No so in the UK. We will have to see if Porsche fixed the boom.
  13. I spoke to Peter and he reminded me that in 2002 Porsche switched to the returnless fuel system for the 996/986. That may be why there is no longer the C2 or C4 designation for 2002-2004. On a C4 with a saddle tank the fuel remaining is calculated, I think by the instrument cluster. But as of 2002 that calculation may be done by the DME. The problem may turn out to be that LowFlyR has a 2001.
  14. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...1&hl=triple
  15. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...904&hl=Jeff That wheel is an easy fix. Find out who your dealer uses.
  16. I would not be concerned with the mileage issue yet. Put it in and see if it works as a start. Not supposed to use a C4 cluster because of the fuel gauge issue, so I do not know what your plans are for that.
  17. MidnightTT did not supply some missing information. Such as the fact that his DME may have been altered to raise the rev limiter, and that is why he can get into range 2 under acceleration. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...&hl=altered His car was in fact "tuned" by Kevin. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...ight=MidnightTT And Keven said "if" he raised the rev limiter then Midnight can get in range 2. So the only plausible theory base on what little info was supplied by MidnightTT, is that part of the alterations to his DME included raising the limit at which the rev limiter comes on. In the old days some of these tuners simply removed the rev limiter as a way to get a hp increase. Now, if you would like a nice 1999 Boxster with 1,884.7 operating hours, and no range 1 or 2, then let me know....
  18. There are 4 wires that go to the rear speakers. The pre and post 2003 instructions from Porsche reference them as green, red, and 2 black (ground) wires. In the prior rear speaker installs we did those were the colors. With Varun's factory rear speaker kit, however, the wires were brown, yellow, white, and green. These wires go into the brown connector that is included in the kit. Guess Porsche/Becker ran out of red and black wire when Varun's kit was made....
  19. We tested the theory for a different OBC "hack" for 2001-2004. If you are only interested in seeing the outside temp display when the ignition is on and do not want to do the switch or stalk retrofit, then you run the 009 wire from slot 23 in the gray connector and ground the other end of the wire. When you turn off the ignition the display reverts to the normal trip odometer display. When you turn the ignition on you see the outside temp display. The ground end of the wire must be connected to ground when you see the temp display. Thanks to Varun for being the guinea pig for this test
  20. Thanks to Efren for hosting this. 4 guys working on the storage/speaker box. 4 dremels were there, but no dremel was used or harmed. And they did it. Varun holds his instrument cluster like a fish he just caught.
  21. The Santana Row thing started last year. You can read all 78 pages here. http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50520 I think it started as a Ferrari event but then all sorts of cars showed up. Lots of Porsches on the right day. I have gone to see the local owners I know, and for another reason. I have not tried to run any antivirus thing. It came with Norton for some days free, a few years ago. Henry and I went to Best Buy for that computer. I then bought the identical computer as a back-up. Ray said the first computer had a virus, so I started using the second computer. My secretary says I need a disc. I think I need an Atom.
