  1. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=17717 You need to have the control unit under the drivers seat checked out for any faults. This can be done with a PST2 or PIWIS. Don't know if Durametric can do it. This is a list of people with these devices. Check the list to see if there is a person in your area.
  2. Then I don't know why your light is on. You need to have the fault code(s) read out to see why it is on. On your missing wheel lock key, Loren gave you the best answer. Pounding on a socket with a sledge hammer is often repeated on car message boards, but I do not know anyone who has actually done it on a Boxster. So you can be the first. I have a 24 and 22 mm 12 point sockets in my tool chest, and an extra locking wheel bolt. So I checked the size. 24 mm is too large. The 22 mm socket seems just a bit too small. I do not have a 23 mm socket to check the fit. I would say you need a 22 or 23 mm socket, 12 points. Buy a cheap one made of soft metal. You do not want the socket to split as you pound on it. Depending on your luck the socket may not last long enought to do all 4 locking wheel bolts. Take lots of pictures and drink lots of beer, as I would like to see a Boxster owner actually do this. There are tools designed for this purpose, usually used with an impact wrench, but I would like to see someone try to do it the old fashioned way, maybe.
  3. When you replaced the air bag was the car battery connected, and did you turn the ignition key to the on position? Most people who replace the air bag need to turn the ignition to the on position in order to rotate the steering wheel to loosen the air bag screws. But you are first supposed to disconnect the battery before you disconnect the air bag. On a UK car you can't just disconnect the battery because the alarm siren will go off.
  4. Ebay seller that has one for $169 should be shot. Full suggest retail price is $34.88. Part number is WDK 986 021 98. My local part guy says that while there are none in inventory it can be ordered. There are 3 in the US but they are sitting on dealer's shelves.
  5. I'll take the easy one. C02 means it is a US car.
  6. Never seen that. I keep the valve on the spare facing down so I can get to it throught the storage pocket area on the cover. Problem is I have so much stuff in my trunk I still can't get to the valve unless I empty the trunk. Thought about getting an extension hose.
  7. The plug is for 4 wires that come from the control unit. The litronics will work even when not hooked up to the control unit. Just put them in.
  8. Drill a hole in the fender and mount an antenna.... The windshield antenna has an electric amp/booster mounted behind the A-pillar trim on the passenger side. The booster is grounded to the car body. Some people have removed the booster and sanded the area to improve the electrical contact. The other thing I see once in a while, is that if the windshield has been replaced the antenna connector may not have been connected.
  9. I think you are mixing up different style plugs, but I'm a Boxster owner. 14 FR 7 LDU has 2 side electrodes. The gap is 0.8mm, plus or minus 0.1mm. This plug is used on the 1997-1999 2.5 liter Boxster. I did not think a 2 side electrode factory plug was used on the 996. This plug you can gap. but you should use the type of gauge in the picture. 14 FRG 6 KQU has 4 side electrodes. I know this plug because it is used in 2000-2004 Boxsters. The gap is 1.6mm. I have no clue how you would measure the gap on this style plug. The mechanics at the local dealership don't gap them. They are good to use out of the box unless they have been dropped on the ground. In the second picture you can see the difference between the two style plugs, and that is why the gap specs are different.
  10. I found the post from 3 years ago. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...hl=control+unit I bought a used unit but I made sure the seller gave me the VIN the unit came from. If you have the alarm option then you also have to deal with the codes for the remotes. If your flooded unit is not too damaged then with a PST2/PIWIS you can take the codes out of the unit and transfer them to the replacement. Otherwise, you would need the paper tags that came with your remotes, and almost no one has those. Those paper tags have the code. If all else fails, you have to buy new remotes. Something like that anyway. Professor Holyoak is better at this stuff than me. It is an expensive headache when that control unit gets fried.
  11. Too bad. A few people have been able to get the control unit under the seat out and apart quickly enough to salvage it. The less time it is exposed to electricity and water the better the chance. What a dumb place to put it. A long time ago I posted how to replace the control unit with a used unit from a donor car, as I had just spoken to Peter Smith to see if this could be done. I forget the details. First, you have a 1997 and the replacement must be from a 1997, as 1997 was the "strange" year. Your replacement is from a 1997 so that is good. Your original unit has a code in it that matches a code in your DME. A used unit is going to have a different code than your DME so that is why they cannot communicate. You cannot change the code in the used unit to match your DME, but you can change the code in the DME to match the used unit. But you need the code from the used unit. This means you need the VIN the used unit came from. With that VIN you get the code from Porsche for the donor car, and put that code in your DME to match the donor control unit. It has been a few years since the post, so this is from my failing memory.
  12. I have seen them on German or UK ebay, or maybe both. Don't remember seeing them on USA ebay.
  13. Danny is/was a local Boxster owner. He is registered on Renntech as europwr. His Boxster was for sale but I bet you can still contact him.
  14. Oh, Danny. Danny is a 2000 Boxster owner who put in the fenders and headlights (non bi-xenon) from a 2002-2004 996. He used the standard Boxster headlight bracket but had to break off the back the holds the electrical connector. He somehow wired up the 996 headlights witout using the 996 bracket and 996 wiring harness.
  15. As a Boxster owner, this is interesting. I looked at PET for 2002-2004 996 and do not see the black plastic spark plug tubes listed. Instead, I see a gasket listed and 6 are reguired. I assume this gasket replaces the tube. VarioCamPlus started in 2002 for the 996 and the tubes must have been replaced by gaskets. Several months ago on the Porsche Club of Great Britain message board a 2003 Boxster owner with a 2.7 posted this picture. He had cracked igintion coils. When he removed the coils he noticed that it did not appear that the engine had the black plastic spark plug tubes, and took the picture. For the life of me I do not see a spark plug tube in the picture. The 986 Boxster never had VarioCamPlus, just VarioCam. When I look at PET it shows that the black plastic spark plug tubes are used on a 2003 Boxster. I do not see a gasket. Does anyone see a spark plug tube in the picture? Again, this is a picture of a 2003 2.7 Boxster.
  16. Thomas, just replace your burned out bulb. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1827 The 1999-2001 old style cluster has incandescent bulbs that you can easily replace yourself. Each of the 3 LCD displays has a bulb behind it, and it is very hard to see the display when the bulb has burned out. If you want the display to be blue, then put in a blue bulb. There is no soldering involved. The 2002-2004 new style cluster has LEDs instead of incandescent bulbs. On the new style you do have to unsolder/solder the LEDs. What gets the confusion going is that the ebay seller is selling LEDs, in blue, for the old style cluster, and these LEDs fit just like the original incandescent bulbs and do not involve soldering.
  17. I have the instructions from Whall because he bought the ebay kit and sent me the instructions. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...47&hl=wiper The ebay instructions really just tell you how to hook up wires - not make the thing. I bought the parts a year ago. Did a quick install to see if the wiper dial and relay worked. It did. Then took them out so I could put together a neat install that would look like factory. But never got around to finishing the project. The guy who came up with this wiper dial hack is Dr. Felker. It is his site that is now down. He has posted a few messages on this board. I printed out the instructions last year to see if I could improve on them. I will have to hunt around and see if I can find them.
  18. That ebay seller has been around for a while. They sell a spoiler switch kit which you can make yourself. A wiper dial kit you can make yourself. And the best is a top relay so you can operate the top when moving - you can do that yourself by bending one of the pins on the relay. I once emailed the seller to ask if they were just bending the relay pin and got no response. I once emailed asking for the instructions for the wiper dial and got no response - wanted to see if it was a rip-off of Felker's hack. Ended up getting the instructions from someone on this board who bought the wiper dial kit, and it was a rip-off of Felker's hack. The seller has nothing that you can't do yourself.
  19. All 1997s were made in Germany. Finland production started for model year 1998. Don't remember production numbers.
  20. That ebay thing can't be real daytime driving lights, as you would need the double relay and the thing would have to be wired to work. Parts alone would be much more than $10 and it would take longer than 5 minutes. Most likely it is this simple thing, which you can do yourself. http://www.whiteson.org/boxster/mods/drl/
  21. I have not seen a warranty booklet online. I have a 1997 and my warranty booklet has a part number on the last page. Someone with a 2005 would have to look at their booklet and give you the part number so you can order one from the dealer. You can also order the owners manual. If you look at the first page of the pdf owners manual it has the part number. WKD 987 021 05. The 05 in the part number means it is for a 2005.
  22. You might check where the cables attach to the side of the transmission and spray some grease.
  23. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...mp;p=16487& I borrowed the "cheating death" line from Grizzy on the 986forum. He has a 1997 with 19" wheels. Then there is a guy on Rennlist with a 1997 and 18" wheels and, not only that, a 3.4 liter engine conversion. If you look at your tire sticker under the front trunk lid of your 1997 you only see 16" and 17" wheels listed. What I remember is that Porsche did not have 18" wheels for the Boxster when the Boxster first came out. 1998 was the first year 18" wheels became an option. If you do not drive on cobblestone roads I would not worrry about it.
  24. Cheating death on wide and 18" wheels on a 1997.... :o
  25. Professor Holyoak can usually figure out these engine swap questions. I think a 2002 3.2 swap into a 2001 2.7 would be interesting. I would think your 5 speed transmission would bolt up to the 3.2 engine, no clue what clutch parts would be used. As far as the horse power difference between a 2.7 and 3.2 it is not much, when compared to 2.5 owners who put in the 3.4 from a 996 and keep the 5 speed Boxster transmission. VarioCamPlus is not an issue, since the 986 Boxster never had it, only VarioCam
