  1. I have a 1997 with about 64,000 miles and have never replaced the belt ot filter. Living on the edge of death.... What is interesting to note is the 12,000 mile service intervals Porsche says for UK cars, while in the US it is 15,000 miles. And yes, a UK mile is the same as a US mile.

  4. At the dealership I have seen the cam covers removed on different cars over the years, to reseal them because of oil leaks. There is a tool to hold the cams in place, but I have never seen the mechanics I know use it. They do what RFM says. The engine is rotated to TDC so that the cam lobes are not depressing any of the tappets. If you do not do this and remove the cover without the tool in place I was told that a camshaft can break. I don't think I have any pictures. I did see this picture on a photo hosting site, but I don't know who took it. Please note the engine is on a stand and has been rotated.
  5. This was a problem when the 987 came out. I use to call it the shoelace. It has been so long I don't remember what the fix was, or if Porsche came out with a TSB. I assume you are still under the factory warranty, so take it to a dealer.
  6. Your profile says you have a 2001, so you have the electric trunk release buttons in the door sill. Which means you have the red thing in the fuse box you pull out and attach 12 volts positive to the red thing, such as from a spare battery and jumper cables. Negative from the spare battery goes to the door striker. On the back of your fuse cover is a paper diagram that shows how to do this. You can also download the 2003 owners manual on this site that shows you how to do it. The 2001 manual is not on this site, but 2001 is the same as 2003. The manual says you need to switch off the alarm by locking and unlocking the door with the key in the door lock. I am in the US and assume it is the same for a UK car. UK cars have an alarm siren, that we do not have in the US. If you disconnect the car battery without first turning the ignition key to the on position, then the siren will go off. I mention it in case you want to remove the car battery for charging or replacement.

  8. I assume the shaft broke off in the hole. I pulled the shaft out with a very small screw threaded in the broken end of the shaft. Then pulled hard on the screw and the broken shaft came out. I remember that the shaft wanted to spin when I inserted the pulling screw, so I had to hold the shaft in place with a pointed object.
  9. If I remember correctly, that connector is protected by a 7.5 amp fuse. Your devices do not draw that much.
  10. You might try some loctite, or even super glue, on the threads. You do not want the ball to be loose and rock around. A mechanic told me this is a cause of a broken mounting lug. If the lug breaks off the frame you will not be happy....

  14. The black plastic trim pieces attached to the clamshell is blocking your view. When you remove the trim on the side that the ball came out, first thing you check is to see if the mounding lug for the ball has broken off from the top frame. If you are lucky the ball came out only because the nut unscrewed itself. If we search long enough we can usually find the nut, unless it has fallen into the drain.
  15. You also need 2 round silver metal clips that secure the switch. You can see them just below the box the switch comes in. These clips are not included with the switch.

  17. Confusing to figure out the model year of your car. In prior messages you said a 1999, then a 1998, and you have an aftermarket Boxster S logo on the rear tunk lid. From the pictures of your car it looks like a model year 1997, RHD. Your left (passenger) side top transmission is not working. That is almost always due to a problem with the cable that drives the transmissions. There is a cable and transmission on each side of the car. A single motor drives both cables. You need to disconnect the clamshell so you can open it all the way. Then put the top in the service position. Then check the cables where they attach to the motor to see if you have 3/4" sticking out past the silver metal ferrule. Fix or replace both cables. Replace broken and bent parts. Retime the transmissions. Rebend the clamshell back into shape. This is all already covered in the top section of this message board.
  18. There is a thin nut. See if it is floating around under the top. You can also look at the other side. You might remove the plastic cover to get a better view. You also need to see if the frame mounting lug that the ball screws into has broken off, and that is the reason the ball was rolling around.

  20. The part number is the standard 997 shift. 996 owners are using it because they say the throws are a bit shorter than the standard 996 shift.
  21. Well, when I started Boxstering in 1999 about all we had was a CD changer. The Porsche CDC-3 changer is the same as the Becker 2660 changer. It is a Sony changer with Becker electronics. When I started in 1999 some people were using Sony changers, because it was cheaper than the CDC-3 from Porsche. Once we figured out the Becker unit was not much more than the Sony units, we started to use the Becker 2660, as the Becker cost a fraction of the Porsche unit. So, the connectors you see look like a Sony for a reason. The changer was made by Sony and branded Porsche or Becker. And that is why when we wanted to buy an extra magazine we bought it as a Sony part, rather than from Porsche or Becker. You would have to find a Sony unit from around 1996. I think it was CDX-T60 or CDX-T62 and maybe CDX-T65. If I remember correctly there were also 6 or 10 disc units, just like what Becker sold. Porsche only sold the 6 disc unit. With the Sony unit there might also an issue with the GAL feature, or you needed an eprom, or something. I don't remember, as once we started to use the Becker 2660 people were no longer using the Sony. Plus you could not find a new Sony, as Sony changes it's products every few months, and Porsche/Becker every decade. But then even Becker discontinued the 2660 a few years ago. It was replaced by the Becker 7860, but never sold by Porsche. The 7860 works with the 210 and 220 radio heads, but has a memory issue and is smaller so it is not a direct fit on the factory mounting bracket.
  22. I spent a lot of time on this a year ago, but do not remember the details. There were 2 versions of the intermittent relay over the years. One version was easier to use than the other. Plus several companies make there own versions of these relays. That is why you see so much information in your links, and why someone said to use the part numbers at your own risk. I settled on the one I mentioned in the Renntech link, and I listed the Bosch and VW part numbers. During my research people using this version of the relay were happy with it. I have given out these part numbers before and people were happy with it. We will see if anyone else has a better suggestion. On a LHD car the relay tray is under the dash, above the pedals.

  24. Not sure what you want to see, but your 1999 should look like my 1997. Only I do not have the new style gas cap that does not have the slots since 1997 was not subject to the recall.
  25. Not seen an Excide, but seen a few local cars with Exide batteries.... No personal experience but I can tell you the cars started. You will note that the vent tube is on the side. My local Kragens sells Exide batteries. Next time I'm there with my camera I'll see if they have in stock a battery that would fit a Porsche.
