  1. I was at a local dealership on a Saturday, so the mechanic working on this car was not around. There is a flange/bearing support bolted to the engine with 3 bolts. In the picture the flange has been removed, but you can see the 3 threaded holes for the bolts. If the mechanic had been there I would have asked to see the flange and the bolt in the middle that shears off. You can see the balls from the failed bearing. It was a 2003 or 2004 2.7. Good news is I did not see a leak from the RMS. Bad news is, the owner needs a new engine due to an intermediate shaft failure.
  2. If you had a 2002 I would have a good guess on the fuel gauge. There is a fuel level sensor/float in the gas tank. The float gets hung up on a hose in the tank and you see a false low level on the gauge. To fix it the hose is tied out of the way so the float does not get hung up. Porsche issued a TSB for this very problem. But your profile says you have a 2000. A mechanic told me how he figures out the problem. If your car is hooked up to a PST2/PIWIS tester you can make the fuel gauge needle swing smoothly back and forth, from full to empty and from empty to full. If it does not then the gauge is faulty. You can also test the low fuel level warning light. If the fuel gauge functions properly with the tester then you remove the sender from the gas tank. You then operate the sender manually and check to see that the gauge needle moves smoothly from full to empty, and from empty to full. If it does not, then the sender is faulty. With the PST2/PIWIS you can also test the coolant temp gauge. You should also state the history of the problems in case someone has a better clue.
  3. Then you can buy just that half. Believe it or not it does not cost that much and since you are only replacing the half no programming is involved. It is as simple as replacing the battery.
  4. Never seen that before. The 2001-2004 instrument clusters don't have bulbs. They have LEDs.
  5. Went to another dealership and there were 2 of them, both with red tops. Also picked up a Spyder poster and Spyder promo booklet. Porsche Boxter RS60....

  7. Here is some info on what Porsche sells and the ATE stuff. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...;hl=brake+fluid For a normal street car any DOT 4 fluid will be fine. At our work on cars days we put in whatever DOT 4 the owner brings. I use Castrol on my car simply because I have a bunch of it leftover from other cars I have owned. And we are all still alive. Don't worry about the ABS unit. It contains a small amount of fluid. You do not need to do anything with it unless the unit is being replaced, and that is not what you are going to do. There is nothing wrong bleeding the old fashioned way with 2 people. We have done this at a work on cars day and it is actually faster than using a power bleeder such as a Motive. With a Motive you are limited to 20 psi and the fluid comes out slow compared to using your foot on the brake pedal and the fluid comes out of the nipple faster, even with the time needed for pumping the pedal.

They sell just the heads for $88.45— $105.55 Loren, Excuse my ignorance regarding the keys but If I have a "chewed" head of my key can I simply buy a replacement head and do a swop? If so how does all the coding stuff work? Thanks RB The key head is 2 plastic parts that snap together. If the chewed part is the half with the buttons, then Porsche sells just that part so you do not have to buy the entire remote,
  9. Well....I went back with the camera. First pic is the #47. Second is the #48. Third is the vent which I turned up for the picture so you could see it. There is no vent kit/adapter in a separate plastic bag, as it is already attached to the battery.
  10. I do not know the answer, but have seen this. Guy with a 2002 C2 came by my office and I hooked it up to the PST2, and played around. Saw 60,618 km in the DME. The US car had the factory OBC so I asked the owner to convert the odometer from miles to km and the OBC display showed 63,236 km.
  11. Was not there. Don't know what happened. Never seen your car. But. At our work on cars days we have done many brake fluid flushes. With the Motive and sometimes switching between ATE gold and blue. When they mix it looks sorta of green to me in the clear plastic drain tube, and then the new color comes out. That's when you turn off the bleed valve. A flush including the clutch takes about 2/3rds of a liter. If they claim to have put 2 liters of the Porsche brake fluid in I have a problem with that alone, as the system does not hold that much. Don't see how blue fluid could be left in the reservoir after 2 liters. Hook up your power bleeder, take off a wheel, hook up your tube, and open up a nipple. If blue comes out....
  12. First thing is to check the cable that goes from the top motor to the transmission on the side that is not working. Review the messages in the top section on this issue.
  13. Guess the prior owner put in litronic headlights and did not install the control unit. There are two 4 wire connectors that go from the control unit to the back of each headlight.

  15. It is called an electrical housing. Someone figured out the the part numbers for a 2001-2004. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9902 But you have a 1999 and the housings on a 1999 are different than 2001-2004. You are going to need a parts guy who is a detective, maybe Sunset Imports in Oregon. If you look at the housings you will see numbers, but they are not direct Porsche part numbers. Look for a number starting with 999. At a work on cars day one of the guys with a 2001 broke the tab that keeps the cam lever locked in the closed position, so the connector would pull away from the back of the cluster. I took out my hot melt glue gun and while he held the connector fully seated I gave it a dab of glue. Then he continued to hold it while the glue set. Maybe you can give this a try. It is better to have 2 people. One to apply the glue, and the other to push and hold the connector in place until the glue sets. The glue person stands outside the car and looks through the windshield. The other person is in the seat holding the connector fully seated until the glue sets.
  16. Now I get it. I have done a 100 OBC retrofits over the years on 1997-2003 and never saw anything like that. Should have taken a picture. But perhaps a prior owner attempted to do the retrofit and gave up, and could not figure out how to get the pins out of the connectors. As for the factory black tape, it is a cloth tape. Years ago Peter Smith showed me a roll a black cloth hockey tape that he split with a razor blade (otherwise it would be too wide to look like the factory tape). He used it for electrical repairs because it looks just like the factory tape. I bought a roll and sometimes use it when I make an OBC harness.
  17. I don't follow this part. "When I went to add the wiring harness there was already a plug (#2 above) with one wire that went to the white harness #22. Since I already had the new harness made I decided to leave the one I found in place and remove the wire from the white harness (#22) and replaced it with my new #22." Other than you are supposed to put a wire in slot #22 of the white connector.

  19. I would have suggested that you find another car and swap the sensor, or buy another sensor, but you have already done that. With a PST2 you can go into the instrument cluster and there are 2 settings for the outside temp. I hooked up a PST2 to my car and tried to play around with the settings, but all I got was an error message and I think it wanted me to use a volt meter. So I am no help, and this may be a Peter Smith question. I suppose the instrument cluster could be defective, but that is a wild quess. Does your 2003 have as a factory option the OBC? If so, have you changed it back and forth from F to C? Also, if you unplug the sensor what do you see? Lastly, what is the history of this issue?

  21. This is old, but I just saw it. The first picture is not the stock shift. It is the EVO short shift, and with the EVO unit the black plastic cable connector is replaced with a metal version held in place with set screws. You need to loosen the set screws in order to pull the metal connector off the cable. This is the black plastic cable connector missing in the first picture, missing because it is not used with the EVO unit. Prior owner might have thrown it away. But you have it in the 997 shift you just bought. For Berty, he is using the standard 997/987 shift in a 996 because people say it has a shorter throw as you note. The 997/987 short shift is blue plastic. His is black so it is the standard 997/987 shift.
  22. Litronics have an additional connector on the back of the headlight for the motor. This connector must be disconnected in order to remove the headlight. Check to see that it is connected by removing the headlight. The previous owner may have removed the headlights and forgot to reconnect them. The high beam adjustment can be tested, but you need to find someone with a PST2/PIWIS. There are level sensors on the suspension on the left side of the car. If you take a left wheel off you can see it. There is a moveable link from the sensor to suspension. You should check to see that the link has not become disconnected.
  23. I was at a local Kragen a few days ago to pick up a serpentine belt. In fact, I went to 2 stores the same day as they are close to each other, looking for the belt. The first store did not have a #47 or #48 on the shelf and did not have stickers on an empty shelf. So either this store does not stock this battery, or they are in the back. It is a very small store with not much shelf space. Did not ask, as I was hunting for my belt. Went to the second store which is much larger. While I was waiting for the guy to find my belt, I looked around and the #47 and #48 were on the rack. Autolite brand as you said. Both had the same $89.99 price, and the same 84 month warranty. Next time I will take pictures....
