  1. The filament is very small - hard to tell if it is broken. That is why I suggested an ohm meter test, but you must remove the bulb/holder to test it. This is what I have on my 1997 Boxster.
  2. Loren to the rescue. That section of the cluster wiring diagram for a 2002 996 is the same as a 2001 turbo except that there are 2 wires shown in B29 for the brake fluid level and the turbo shows just one. B5 on you connector should be empty as that is for the oil pressure sender wire that the Boxster does not have. That is where you will try Peter's hack. B2 on your connector should have a wire since it is the same for a Boxster/996/turbo. Someone will want your new style S tip cluster. Much easier to take apart.
  3. Never thought someone would ask a question about that bulb. Did you put it back on properly. Take it out and see if the filament is broken. Or, check it with an ohm meter. I replaced mine when it burned out. You cannot just replace the bulb as it is part of the holder. The only place I know who sells it is Porsche. Jeff
  4. Thanks for the pictures of the 2 gauges. You cannot remove them like that on the old style 996 cluster. Next time you want a dot matrix cluster stick with a Boxster or 996 cluster. :P A local turbo owner confirmed that they have a car level requirement to check the oil level. He has seen the message and said after a few minutes waiting it was ok - but he has a turbo with a turbo cluster. Peter thinks it is a software issue with the turbo cluster and does not think there is a 'hack.' Again, the hack to eliminate the oil pressure error he suggested may not work. No one has experience doing this, especially a Porsche dealership. He did not think it had anything to do with the level sensors on the suspension for litronics. There is always the dip stick....... The 2001 turbo wiring diagram I have is only in paper form. I see an oil level wire in the blue connector, slot 2. But a Boxster also has this wire so it must be for the level display and I guess not relevant to the car not level error message.
  5. That link is to Peter's original instructions. Peter is the shop foreman at my local dealer and the technical technical advisor to our local Porsche group. Peter gave me the instructions and an already made wiring harness several years ago and showed me how to do it. That is how I learned. He has updated the instructions to include the new style cluster that started in 2001 on the Boxster and in 2002 on the 996. You can do it with 1 or 2 switches. If you do it with 1 switch then you do not get the speed warning gong. I suggest to do it with the stalk since then it is like factory, but some people with long legs want to do it with a switch. We show how to do it both ways on the DVD. Jeff
  6. In the past few years I have done over 30 trip computer retrofits. With the stalk or with the switch. I can be done on any US car. You can have the outside temp display turned on on your year without the retrofit, but that is the only display you will see unless you do the retrofit. Jeff
  7. All the plastic interior parts just pull out. Would need to see a picture of the wire to even make a guess.
  8. When I asked Peter why 500 ohms he said it was a nominal value. The part number for the VW wire is 000 079 009 about $2. My local Porsche dealer sells it and other dealers as well. If yours does not then contact VW. I do not know about the cluster wanting the car to be level for the oil check. Need more info. On a 986/996 the cluster does not know if the car is level. Perhaps it is a turbo thing as they have an oil tank and the car is supposed to be running when the level is checked. I hope this does not turn out to be another problem with a turbo cluster on a Boxster.
  9. Do not use a torx bit. Triple square has 12 fine points and torx has 6 large points. The same bit is used by VW and Audi on some transmissions. If you look at the door striker you will see what a triple square looks like except it is not the security type. Never seen triple square at Sears. I bought my Hazet bits from Samstag. Zdmak in Florida has less expensive versions of the same bits. http://www.zdmak.com/ Zdmak also has these tools on ebay - search under Porsche tools and you will find Zdmak and both bits. You have to remove the triangle metal plate under the transmission to get to the drain plug. You know the old rule. You do not remove the drain plug until you know you can remove the fill plug. The oil level is 11mm below the filler opening. You measure it with a Porsche special tool - a bent coat hanger. Torque for both plugs is 18 foot pounds. Jeff
  10. Looks like it worked. First 200mph Boxster with a turbo boost gauge. After you have driven it for a while let us know if the fuel gauge is accurate. Does the analog speedometer gauge match the digital? Do you have a picture of the 2 gauges you removed. I have a spare old style 996 cluster and it would be a pain to remove the gauges on that cluster - like to see how it is done with the new style. Is there a soft top warning light. Are you able to scroll through all the displays with just the dash switch. This is what Peter said about the oil pressure warning - hope I remembered it correctly. You need to make the cluster think it has an oil pressure sender. When the car runs there is a resistence of 200-1500 ohms. Buy one of the yellow VW wires like you used for your trip computer retrofit. Cut it in half and solder inline a 500 ohm resistor. One end of the wire goes in the connector to the cluster - just like when you did the trip computer. It goes in the blue connector - slot 5 - which should be unused as you do not have a pressure sender. Ground the other end of the wire. Peter did not mention any special place for the ground, so try the same place you used for the ground wire when you did the trip computer retrofit. No one has done this so I hope it works.
  11. Instructions and pictures first. And how was the mileage changed. And is the fuel level working correctly.
  12. You might want to check out the B&M DVD. You need the 2 bits that are on top. On the left is a 17mm allen for the fill plug and on the right is 16mm triple square with a hole in the middle for the drain plug. Mine are made by Hazet so they are a bit expensive. You can find cheaper versions is you look around. Jeff
  13. I spoke to Peter and he said this is what may be the problem, and I'm sure I will not get the details exact. Your Boxster DME has a Boxster model number in it. Your cluster has a different model number. When they do the automatic search with the PST2 it cannot find the cluster since the model numbers do not match. Have your dealer change the model number in your DME to match the model of the cluster. I forget if you have a GT2 or Turbo cluster. The model number for a Turbo is 996770. This was a similar problem when turning on the trip computer when the 2003s first came out. The PST2 could not find the cluster to turn on the trip computer as for some reason the model number was not in the DME. Peter would then enter 986320 (for the S) or 986310 ( for the base) into the DME and then he could modify the instrument cluster coding to turn on the trip computer. He also confirmed that the error is most like due to the fact you do not have the 2 wire sender unit, 1 for the light and the other for the gauge. He suggested a fix for that short of putting in the correct sender and running the extra wire. But first see if his first suggestion works. Jeff
  14. Where are the pictures. You are paving new ground and beyond what I know about a 996 cluster in a Boxster. I will ask Peter if there is enough detail. Also need to see a picture of the error on startup. Finally compared the 2001 Boxster and Turbo cluster wiring diagram and was suprised to see not much difference. The software is another matter.
  15. Due to the angle of your picture I can only see 175mph. A turbo/GT2 cluster reads to 200mph. What cluster is in the picture?
  16. Lots of questions. The plastic lense can be replaced but it is glued on so it is a pain. I did take one off. Worry about that later. Would have to look at the Turbo 2001 instrument cluster wiring diagrams for the seat belt light and compare to the 2002 Boxster. Have the 2001 turbo and the 2001 Boxster wiring diagrams, but not 2002 Boxster. Doubt if 2001 and 2002 Boxsters changed the wires to the cluster. One of the local EE guys will have to take a look at the diagrams as it give me a headache when I look at them. Top in motion must be spoiler indicator? As for the mileage if you have a zero mileage Turbo cluster. Do not put on more than 62 miles if that function works, or it is locked and cannot be changed with the PST2, but there is the aftermarket. Our local technical advisor did not charge when a 2002 2.7 owner put in a new Boxster S cluster and the miles were set forward from 0 to the actual miles. But I can understand any dealer charging for this service.
  17. Russ, I have an old 1997 Boxster so what do I know. I saw on one of the boards that you can turn off the seatbelt chime with the OBC stalk. Jeff
  18. Might have to send you a set of the evil DVDs. ;) We cover this on the DVD for the trip computer/steering wheel swap/hard top adjustment. First remove the hazard switch. You will see 2 place plastic tabs on the switch. Squeeze them in and with you third hand pull on the white part of the switch with pliers and the switch will pull out. Flip the cluster. My screwdriver is pointing to the plastic lever that holds the connector in place. Pull the lever back just a hair. Then you pull the connector down. It does not pull away from the switch the way you think it would or how you separate a normal connector. Slide the connector down. Do not forget to protect your dash from the cluster with a towel under the cluster. The 5 tabs that hold the cluster in place can dig into your dash. Jeff
  19. There is a lot of info on the Becker board. Becker makes the standard CDR-23 radio and optional PCM2. If you have the HiFi or Bose option then you have MOST. The only changer that will work is the Becker CDC-4 sold only by Porsche. Porsche has proprietary extensions to the exchange on the MOST optical bus, and without reverse engineering or help from Porsche other companies are out of luck. The CDR-23 radio and PCM2 do not have auxillary inputs, such as for XM. You have to use an FM modulator. This is the info I see on the Becker board. http://members4.boardhost.com/beckerboard/
  20. Has the same part number PNA 986 KIT, but now it works for post 2002 MOST cars. A new part was added for MOST cars. Amplifier wire connectors. A new TSB was issued in August. There are 172 kits in the US. Also works with PCM2. Thanks to Raman for tracking this down. Jeff
  21. I would have to think about repositioning the needle due to the low fuel warning light. When the chip in the cluster thinks the level is low and turns on the light it does not care where the needle is pointing. If you were putting in a 996 cluster from a C2 this would be a fairly easy project, but I will cross my fingers on a turbo cluster. If it powers up after you plug it in take lots of pictures. I assume you have the OBC stalk so see if the displays work. With the style 996 cluster on an old style cluster Boxster everything will work as soon a you turn the key on except the oil pressure gauge, as you need a 996 sender unit and an extra wire from the sender to the cluster. For the surround you machine the Boxster one for the additional 2 gauges, or you buy a surround and dash cap from a 996. A 996 surround does not fit a Boxster dash cap - plus on a 996 the dealer does not sell the surround as a separate part. Find out if the turbo cluster works first and then I can give you the details on how to install it. Jeff
  22. These are the pictures Poursha took. As in the past the cd changer kit has C2/AWD mounting brackets for the changer. Lots of parts and no instructions.
  23. Sorry, but I though you saw this. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...st=0entry1790 You will run out of gas when the gauge says there is fuel in the tank . That is the way it is when you put a C4 cluster in a C2 or Boxster. My guess is that you will face the same problem with a GT2/Turbo cluster. I will cross my fingers and hope it works for you, since no one has done this. If it works then there are 2 ways to put such a cluster in a Boxster. Jeff
  24. Hint. You should say this is what I have. This is what I want to do. None of us can guess. I have this year car with these options. Since I am not sure I could guess all day long like ppbb. You can put a AWD cluster on a C2/Boster, but the fuel level will not be accurate. The gas tank is different. Pictures for the non tip inclined.
  25. Nice to have a guinea pig. Take lots of pictures. I just spoke to parts and the 20 in the part number is in fact superseded by 05 like Loren said. List is $1267. It is for a GT2 per the computer, and there are no option codes. Hope you do not need the tip shift indicators. Hope it works but a C4 AWD cluster has a fuel level problem with a C2 or Boxster cluster. I wish you luck. If it works then you need to modify the Boxster surround for the width of the 2 extra guages, or buy the surround and matching dash cap from a 996. Jeff
