  1. Like Loren said it is a oil-to-water heat exchanger. Without seeing your car it sounds like a small coolant leak and the dried coolant is the crystals you see. There is coolant in the exchanger. The coolant is used to heat the oil and then when the oil is hot the coolant is used to cool the oil. Jeff
  2. We have done all that. We filmed it some time ago but I have not looked at the tape. You should try a car that has a short shifter to see if you like it first. Someone will let you try their car. I would like to put in the B&M unit which bolts to the transmission. Paul in Menlo Park bought one and wants us to put it in but he is in Paris until mid-Feb Just do not leave any parts around or they may end up in Kirby's car.
  3. Both are just emission code readers. The only way i know to change things is with the PST2.
  4. The PST2 can do lots of neat things. But it cost a lot of money and 1 year of software alone is $2,500. It does take just 5 minutes to do a lot of things with it. But the dealers or independent shops have to buy it, and they need a return on the investment. Jeff
  5. No experience with that one. Local guys have ottoscan and auterra which work fine.
  6. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...&st=0entry161 Come to California so we can film a top fix for the next set of DVDs. They should have designed the transmission so the V-shaped arm could only be bolted on one way. Mark is the top expert so do what he says. My experience with the relay is that if it has a problem the top will not move or the windows do not drop. This is the 1997-1999 relay.
  7. It is going to be interesting to see how the shifts sort out. ;) Last month I called our local 996 owner who bought the B&M from Brandywine on ebay which bolts to the transmission to get the part number. He answered on his cell phone in Paris where he will be on business until mid-Feb, so I will not have the part number until he get back to California. Our local group had dinner with a guy from Germany a few days ago from the German Boxster board. You cannot buy the B&M unit that replaces the shift lever in Germany anymore now that Porsche has come out with the same thing. I think all this stuff is made by H&R.
  8. The shop manual has a list of torque specs. I cannot figure out what is what. There is no diagram. Maybe you can. All numbers are foot pounds. Front. On side member 48. Stablilizer mount on stabilizer 34. Stabilizer mount at shock asorber tube and wheel carrier 63. Rear To carrier side section 17. Sabilizer mount to stabilizer and spring strut 34.
  9. I do no know the GT3 and was tempted to say contact Porsche Motorsports as for the 996 you cannot buy any internal transmission parts. But on the GT3 they do list transmission gears. But there is only one 1st 2nd gear set listed so it must be the one you already have. Hope someone can be of more help. Jeff
  10. Instructions have been posted several times. Just start lifting the trim from a corner and go around the piece with your fingers as you lift.
  11. The turbo headlights are the same as the 2002 up 996 headlights except Bi-Xenon is standard on the turbo. Jeff
  12. It is not hard at all to remove the front console, also called the GT3 delete. Tall people or people with long legs like to do this. I have never seen a RHD 996 but you might want to ask here. http://forum.boxa.net/index.php?act=idx
  13. How can you tell from the first picture what exhaust system the car in the first picture has?
  14. What is the source of this statement and what information, if any, do you have on the claimed 15% reduction?
  15. It is not common but you are not the first to have an oil leak from the sender. Pic from JB.
  16. I am in California and have had my car for almost 5 years. I have used all 3 grades with no issues. We have knock sensors. If the motor does not like the octane it will retard the timing a bit. This is a common feature on many other cars.
  17. http://www.uuhome.de/william.darden/index.htm 12 volts is 12 volts and amps is amps as far as I'm concerned. I have seen just about every brand battery in Boxsters over 5 years and no brand batteries. A few years ago I replaced mine with a $60 battery sold by AutoZone and another local Boxster owner bought his from Sears for $30 more. I looked at his battery and he looked at mine - identical group size 48 except for the sticker on the side. There are battery message boards. :o Sears in California may buy from company X due to various factors, such as shipping costs. Sears in New York may buy from Company Y. Sears is a retailer and does not make anything. Most independent shops I see carry Interstate. But it could be for various reasons - such as profit for the shop. I also have a picture or 2 of an aftermarket battery without a vent hose and the owners are still alive. Jeff
  18. Like everyone says, it is a separate part. The part number will vary depending on the finish.
  19. With one minor difference it looks like the heated foam on the normal seats are the same as the sport seats for 2003. But rather than taking out the foam from your present seats you can buy the upper and lower heated foam parts and put them in the sport seats. Then sell your heated normal heated seats. The foam is about $110 each times 4.
  20. #2 is the cut-off valve. #3 is the change-over valve. This is a picture of the cut-off valve.
  21. The brakes and clutch have the same reservoir. Ignore the Motive instructions that say to clamp off a vent tube since we do not have one. You can get a plastic gear oil pump at any auto parts place. Someone will have to help you with the tool to remove the drain and fill plugs since I think it is different on my 5 speed Boxster. Jeff
  22. I was temped to say you have a bad oil separator, but when that goes you see a big cloud of smoke. The smoke for a minute on startup after the car has been sitting is considered normal as you know. Let us know if it turns out to be an issue as this is a new one for me, as I doubt you have worn rings or guides.
  23. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...st=0entry3189 No one I have spoken to knows what will be in the 550 or if the 15% is a marketing error. Can't wait until I see the first one as it will take me a minute to figure out what is in there. If it is really only 15% and it is the B&M/OEM type that replaces the shift lever then I could not see why it you not work with any current Porsche model. Stay tuned. You could also consider the EVO unit. The reduction is less than B&M. I forget what the claimed reduction is. Jeff
  24. Got mine off ebay from importpartsspec.com for $39.99. The Motive company is about 40 minutes from where I live. Been used a few times when we works on cars.
