  2. All you need is a hacksaw and a grinder. Local owner Danny did this years ago when he cut down a B&M shift lever. A real short short shift. Place your orders now.

  5. You need to review the install instructions. The spoiler is removed and the plug to the motor is disconnected. A black plastic trim plate in the kit covers the hole - you can see the plate has been removed in this picture. Then the bulb in the instrument cluster for the spoiler warning light is removed.
  6. You know what Porsche says. Porsche also says to not reuse the springs and clips. My dealer does not stock these parts - special order. Use common sense and if you see something that is not 100% good then replace it.
  7. I would not be able to find Canada with all that snow. We did film a brake pad change and brake fluid replacement in sunny California. I have not looked at the video yet to see if it is good enough for a DVD. It is easy to change the pads. To remove the caliper to remove the rotor you need an allen bit on a ratchet wrench for the 2 allen bolts. Think it is 10mm. The retaining pin for the pads is a tight fit. I use a punch to drive out the pin.

  9. You might want to consider the HPAS sound system retrofit kit Porsche sells. You get a better amp and new speakers. It was popular when it first came out but it seems like no one rembers it. It has all the parts for a Boxster. On a 996 you have to buy as an extra the rear speakers. You do have to cut your door panels. The other parts drop in.
  10. Sounds like the bearing for the intermediate shaft. If that is what it is - you are not the first.......... More common on the newer cars as Porsche went from a double to a single roller bearing.
  11. You need to come to one of our work on cars day in San Jose. Then you need to have Raman there. Not sure what your question is, but with MOST the units communicate to each other via the fiber optic MOST system. If you remove a unit from the optic link then you will have a problem. Your PCM cannot then talk to another amp. The copper speaker wires are not the issue. Perhaps Raman will see this and give you his input. Jeff
  12. Instructions on how to remove the instrument cluster and take it apart have been posted here several times. Search. Henry did the exact same thing on his 2000. Perhaps if he has any tricks on the needles and he sees this he will give you a hand. Henry's pic.
  13. Loren has put all the top problem stuff in one place. Look and you will find. The cables now have a single part number for both left and right. 986 561 717 03. Does not make sense to me since it is the same part number for the cables for the new style transmissions, as I did not think they were interchangeable.
  14. Peter called me yesterday to say Stevens Creek had the 550 special edition. There has been much speculation as to the 15% shift throw reduction claim, and how it is done. You can tell just by looking the shift lever has been shortened. No standard shift lever and shift knob sits that low. There is no B&M/Porsche short shift kit in there. Peter holds the pen while I take the picture. Then I go over to parts. The shift tower for the special edition has its own part number, which is different than a 2003/4 Boxster S. Time to get out the hacksaw.
  15. You need to talk to Raman as he knows this stereo stuff. He has a 2003 and lives near me in San Jose. You may have to deal with the MOST fiber optic thing that started in 2003. The radio head talks to the amp in the trunk via fiber optics. PM if you want Raman's email and phone numbers. From the specs you gave it must be the sub that goes under the passenger seat. I have never heard this unit. But I see it on ebay from time to time. This is an interesting one I saw on ebay. This is Henry's sub. He is from San Jose. This is Len's car. He is from Southern California.

  17. There are 2 sensors on each side. One before and the other after the cat. That is the correct part for the filter. Should look like this.
  18. It is a strong clip. You have to lift up on the open end of the clip and slide the clip off at the same time.

We also filmed 2 oil changes when Andy was there and I could not use them for a DVD because of all his jokes. You have to make the wiring harness. I think the 2001 996 still had the old style cluster with the digital speedo unter the tac. You need a connector and the cover for the connector. 996 650 056 40 and 999 650 057 40 - these are Porsche numbers but it is a BMW connector. You can buy from BMW the connector/cover that looks a little bit different but it does the same thing - 61-13-6-909-058. Need 3 VW wires - 000 979 009. Need 2 VW wires 000 979 010. Most Porsche dealers can get them - if yours has a problem then you can get them from VW. Wires are $2 each. Need 4 butt connectors. The red ones at any auto parts place for 22-18 gauge wire. As I said on the video when we were making Frency's harness I like the little butt connectors Radio Shack sells for telephone wire - 64-3073 for a package of them. Need 1 ring terminal for the ground wire. 1/4" stud size for 22-18 gauge wire. You saw on the video the need to cut a square hole in the rubber gasket for the 4th stalk which we do with a utility knife. If you want to waste money you can buy it already cut - 993 552 573 01 01C. About $8. Now for the 4 stalk steering column switch assembly. I think your year has shiny finish buttons/icons on the end of the stalk. We explained on Frency's 2000 that you can no longer buy the shiny finish switch assembly as Porsche has sold out the entire inventory due to so many people doing the retrofit. The current part has the matte finish buttons. This does not matter as you will transfer your shiny finish buttons over - but you do not have a shiny finish OBC stalk button to transfer. The shiny finish button is 996 613 503 01 A01, about $3. The switch assembly is 996 613 219 10 EWC, about $150. I do not remember if we mentioned the difference between a Boxster and a 996 on the DVD. On a 996 you have and oval trim piece around the hazard switch that the Boxster does not have. On a 996 you must remove this trim piece first, then the switch and torx screw. Sandy's pic shows the oval trim piece. Let me know how it goes. There is a guy on the East Coast and his dealer said it could not be done - but he has the DVD - and then they did it.

Check this out. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...st=0entry4094 Andi lives south of Stuttgart and he modifies the original sport exhaust - claims it sounds better than the 996 sport exhaust. I would like to see pictures of the new sport exhaust to see what was changed. As you know the Boxster sport exhaust shown on the PCNA site and in the current tequipment catalog is a picture of the 996 sport exhaust under the Boxster listing. The PCA site says you can use the other 2003/4 exhaust tips - so I bet your tip is bolted on. I assume the new one works like the original. There is a vacum operated flap on each side of the muffler. Peter said the easiest way is to disconnect the vacum hose to the servos - I assume the servos are the vacum operated flaps. If you search on this board the 996 guys have another way that might work if the Boxster is wired the same way as a 996.
  23. Do you have option XLF? Is there a dash switch like a 996? The original sport exhaust would close the flaps approx. 27 to approx. 42 mph. I have not seen any info on the sport exhaust for 2003/4 - not even a picture. The original sport exhaust on a Boxster never sounded as good as the one on a 996. Jeff
  24. Behind the stalks is a black trim plate, just below the instrument cluster. If that plate is removed then you can get to the back of the 2 short mouldings by reaching behind the dash and using a T10 bit. There are 2 screws in each moulding. But to get the trim plate off you have to remove the steering wheel and the 2 plastic covers for the steering column. If your car had a glove box then you would remove the box and then you can reach behind the dash to get to the screws for the long moulding. No glove box - then you have to do it the brutal way.
