  1. Porsche has never made a hp increase claim for the Boxster or 996 sport exhaust - so ask the service guy the source of his claim. You do this for a better sound and nothing else.
  2. The overwhelming response has been to start this season's work on car days at the Harley place, just to do something different. The owner even wants to do a barbecue for us but I told him no. It is hard to not find San Jose Custom Cycles. 1425 West San Carlos Street. The largest cross streets are Meredian and Park. Phone is 408-275-9909. Start at 10:00 am but we will be there for a while. There are a lot of goodies there.
  3. Wish I would have known sooner. I would have set you up with the German Boxster board people. I can try if it is not too late. http://stau.jowood.de/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=4 Olaf from Germany was in San Jose a few weeks ago for a convention and about 14 of us got together for dinner. I can't think of anything you can buy there we cannot buy here - except for the Porsche YoYo I gave the money to Olaf to buy for me when he returned to Germany. I think the gift shop has some things that are only sold there. I have a Boxster book that is only sold there - in English - but I bought it from a guy in Germany. Bring you camera phone and take spy shots of the 987. Jeff
  4. You cannot buy just the plastic joint - have to buy the entire arm to get the joint. And it is not red anymore. It is white. 986 561 279 02 for left or right. I have a set of holders for taps used to cut threads. The holder has a square opening on one end. One of the holders happened to be the correct size for the square drive cable. That is going to be hard to find. One of the guys in the shop said he can just put the end of the cable directly into a drill chuck.
  5. I am glad you remember I live about a mile away from the airport - and so does Raman. I dont't want to see a little red plane in my back yard when I wake up. Don't forget to wear your parachute. I think we used up Aileen's extra cans of brake fluid the last 2 times we did brake fluid changes. But Henry may have a can of ATE blue. Or just pick up 1 liter of your favorite brand and also remind me to bleed your clutch. We will be working long enough that you can show up after.
  6. There is no power to the bulb socket on the passenger side, so just putting in a bulb is not going to make it work. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1432
  7. It is not based on a date ot mileage. It is based on engine operating hours. Jeff
  8. There are 2 places we can use on Saturday the 20th. Start time is 10:00 a.m. Henry's. http://vssi-eda.com/hverheyen/box_pics/clu...address_dtl.jpg San Jose Custom Cycles. The owner is a friend, former Boxster owner, and we are both motorcycle nuts. http://www.sanjosecustomcycles.com/SJCC/address.asp Henry has room for about 12 cars if we move them around. Custom Cycles has a large parking lot with room for 25 plus cars. Custom Cycles also has 3 lifts and a dyno - but only for bikes - but we can use their tools if we forget something. The shop is 5 minutes away from Stevens Creek Porsche if we need parts, and the dealership is open on Saturday. I will pick the location in a few days before depending on the number of cars that will show up, and the nature of the projects. The usual gang will be there to help you, including the famous Madam No Fear - who owns and rides a motorcycle. Give me an idea of how many cars and the projects you have. Jeff
  9. The headlight is glued together and I was not able to take one apart without breaking it. If you have hight wattage bulbs you probably melted the plastic lense in front of the bulb like is shown in the first picture.
  10. This, like the speedometer error, is not adjustable with the PST2. If it does not meet specifications (if there is a spec) then the instrument cluster is replaced. Jeff
  11. The knob you used to set the clock. Turn the knob to the left and hold it for 5 seconds. It will convert back to mph. Jeff
  12. I wish I had a still picture of when we filmed the duo 30k services because I bought a strap wrench with me. There is no reason it would not work but there is not a lot of clearance to swing a strap wrench. Plus some of the oil filter cannisters I have removed were on so tight I had to use a 24" breaker bar on my cup style oil filter wrench to get the thing unscrewed. You cannot do that with a strap wrench if the cannister has be over torqued and I would not want to do it with the stubby handle on a strap wrench. Plus, people want the cannister torqued back on with a torque wrench set to 18 foot pounds and you cannot do that with a strap wrench. I do not use a torque wrench when I screw the cannister back on in my own car since I know what 18 pounds feels like. I do use it when working on other cars since it makes them feel better. I have never seen a mechanic use a torque wrench on the plastic cannister, but maybe that is why sometimes I have to use my breaker bar to get it off. Jeff
  13. We have just replaced the plastic housing because the old metal drive cable was always fine. If it ain't broke.... If you look back I have pictures on how to remove the metal drive cable from the worm gear if that is the way you go. When you get the transmission out you will see a square plate with 4 philips screws. That plate holds the metal ferrule on the end of the plastic housing in place. Remove the plate, pull old plastic housing off, and slide new housing on. I grease the drive cable before replacing the housing. If you have a can of spray grease then you can give the inside of the new housing a shot.
  14. Don't forget the VW wires. BMW part number for the connector is 61-13-6-909-058. My local BMW dealer does not keep them in stock so they have to be ordered.
  15. Does your analog speedometer now read incorrectly?
  16. That is for a Boxster. There is a company in Germany that has them in 3 different colors for a Boxster. Didn't know 996 owners were into that stuff. ;)
  17. The system works even with the light on. My older Boxster had its light on and off for 2 years. When it came on a friend with a PST2 would turn it off. Then it would come on again. Repeated this a few times until I had a reason to take the car in for other work and the latest and greatest fix was done. I was in no hurry because I was told the system was functional even with the light on. Jeff
  18. In the US we have 2 switches on the clutch pedal. One for the starter interlock and the other for cruise control. For some reason even if our cars do not have cruise control the switch on the clutch for it is there. Get a flashlight and see if you have a switch. I doubt if you have the starter interlock switch as that is a North America 'safety' thing.
  19. I found some more pictures I took of Henry filming Raman removing the lighter. Post them all for the next poor soul.
  20. Putting aside 2003/4 cars with MOST you can put an S cluster in the base Boxster and it will work. The cluster is smart so the analog speedometer will be your actual speed - so I have been told. We have 1 or 2 pre 2003 base Boxster owners who have the S cluster in their car because they wanted the silver trim rings and dials. The 996 cluster also has a higher reading analog display but it also displays the correct speed of a base Boxster - so I have been told. Your part number is incomplete, but I think it is a year or 2 old. Check you part number again as it is missing some letters on the end. I also need the history of the cluster, new, used, who sold it, what year were you told it was for. The mileage for the vehicle is stored in the instrument cluster. If you swap clusters then whatever mileage is in the replacement cluster is what you will see. For example. I pluged in a used 996 cluster I bought off ebay and it displayed 990 miles when my 1997 Boxster has over 45,000 miles. So if you put in a brand new cluster out of the box the odometer will be 0. The dealer with the PST2 will set the mileage of a new cluster forward to match the actual mileage of your car. However once a cluster has over 62 miles it is locked and the dealer cannot set the mileage forward with the PST2. However, there are private companies that can take a locked cluster and display whatever miles you want. 2003 went to the MOST fiber optic system. There is no longer a security radio code card. Instead, the code is in the radio and I think the matching code is in the instrument cluser. When the codes match then the radio works. The codes can only be set with the dealers PST2 as far as I know. This is not an issue on the pre 2003 cars as they do not have MOST. Your radio is in the protect/theft mode because it cannot find the matching code in the instrument cluster because you replaced the cluster. What I do not know is if you were to put in a 2001-2002 cluster in a 2003 can the 2001-2002 cluster be coded for the radio since MOST did not exist in 2001-2002. That is why I am curious as to what year your new cluster is for. 2001-2002 clusters can be swaped between 2001-2002 cars with no problem. Jeff
  21. And how much do you charge? http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...threadid=118654
  22. When 0-40 first came out the only place to get it was a Porsche or Mercedes dealer. Then I found a local Mobil distributor. Then it started showing up in local retail stores. Call Mobil and give them your zip code and they will give you the name of a distributor. 1-800-662-4525.
  23. Pelican Parts also says they cannot get the Wurth silver paint. They are now selling the Einszett paint just like Autopia. They say it is the identical color as Wurth but I have no personal experience.
  24. There are 24 of them on ebay for $200. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...RK%3AMEBWA%3AIT
  25. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...st=0entry5169 Good to see it works on the 996 facelift.
