  1. If you are using the correct version then you are trying to put the a/c display in the wrong slot.
  2. Bring your car to one of our work on cars days in San Jose when Mark is around and we will take a look at it for you if you do not have the shop fix it. The Boxster top is simple compared to a 996 top.
  3. I trust you know Porsche sells a retrofit kit for the sensor and another kit for the mirror. You can have one, or the other, or both. Someone said the mirror is used on an Audi. I have the instructions for both if you want to see them. We have put the mirror in - it is just 3 wires. The issue I see with a VW mirror is if it will mount on the metal pad glued to a Boxster windshield. I have removed Porsche mirrors but not VW - so I do not know how a VW mounts. If you have a good picture of the base of a VW mirror I might be able to tell if it will mount. Jeff
  4. This is going to be hard to fix over the internet. There are 2 transmissions and 1 electric motor that operates the transmissions via cables. Other than the fact the clam shell is off-centered what is in your car now. Lift up the calm shell cover and show us some decent pictures. Your "motor" is apparently a transmission. Do not understand a "loose V-lever." It might have just run off the gear. Why are you replacing the transmissions? Why is the top not working to begin with? I can't help just by showing me 2 pictures of top parts. You need to detail what you have. Why it does not work, or what oem parts do or do not work. Does your oem top motor make a noise when you push the button with your brake lever up and the key on - brake warning light on when the car is running?
  5. That is correct. Never seen a wheel stud conversion set for a Boxster/996 - but why not. http://www.kyankton.net/Wheels.htm
  6. This is the car we want to film for a DVD. What is the history/story to date. I see what looks like old parts already out of the car - then a bag of new parts. All I know is that you bought a used 1997. The picture with the 2 transmissions and motor on the floor - are those the orignials which have been removed? Have to wake up Mark for this one. :o
  7. What is the finish of the 4 buttons at the end of you steering column switch assembly? Do they all match? For future reference. Any dealer can get parts from Atlanta, Ontario (SoCal) or Germany. The parts computer shows how many units are in stock at each location. They can also check the inventory at other dealers - and buy it from another dealer if it is on their shelf - then resell it to you. My dealer was doing this with the original rear speaker kit when there was 0 inventory at the 3 locations. My dealer would find another dealer that had the units sitting on their shelf and buy them if a customer at my dealer wanted the kit.
  8. EWC has matte finish buttons/icons at the end of the stalks. EAK has gloss finish for pre 2002 cars. The gloss finish switch assembly was discontinued about a year ago and you can no longer buy it.
  9. The groove is what holds the standard shift knob in place. If you have one of the optional shift knobs then it is held in place with a set screw and the groove is not necessary.
  10. I think it is so the top material cannot rub against the mechanical stuff that moves when you raise or lower the top. It also hides the same stuff. If it was my car I would get them if you are missing them. We remove them when we work on a top - but we remember to put them back on.
  11. I do not think the a/c display slot is DIN sized. Measure it and you will see that it is taller so there will be a gap.
  12. I have it on my January 1997 and you should have it unless it was removed for top problems. Left is 986 561 445 02 01C. For the right take out 445 and substitute in 446. About $20 each.
  13. Congrads on the install. Other than the two local 2003s we have done I do not know anyone else who has done the retrofit on a 2003. Others have tried and gave up. When I see 45 degrees I do not miss the East Coast. But at least the speed gong is set to 85 mph. In 2002 for the Boxster Porsche came out with a dot matrix center display for the trip computer option. Without the option it is a segmented display - the same display that is on a 2001 with the option. Your owners manual shows the difference. The only way to get the dot matrix display is to buy a new instrument cluster that has the dot matrix display. This is the center dot matrix display on the 550 special edition.
  14. The specs for your old and new plugs are they same - just a different manufacturer. Your 996 question does remain. Why is it 30k on your 1999 when it went up to 60k for a 2001 when it is the identical plug? My Boxster question also remains - since the 2000 and 2001 Boxster motors and plugs are identical but it is 30k on a 2000 and 60k on a 2001. I have asked the mechanics I know at my local dealer why? - and they just do what the Germans say. In Europe they even cut it down more than in the US for routine service. Exact same cars but, for example, their service intervals are 12,000 miles and ours are 15,000. Marketing for the US market I think. Multi electrode plugs are old technology - and Porsche has used them long before the 986 996. My speculation is that PCNA has no one to contact the dealers and tell them the 4 side electrodes do not need to be changed so often. The mechanic may know but not the "service advisor." Plus they make more money when the plugs are changed.
  15. Under the remote key head unit there is a listing for "remote control upper part." Don't know what it is - but retail is about $24. 996 637 353 00. Maybe Porsche will replace it under warranty. Believe it or not there is a listing for that little crest on the remote - $7. Don't tell Don.
  16. A local tire/alignment shop puts on a Porsche tech session for us once or twice a year. He has seen the same thing on Vetts. He said that once it gets hot the lube bakes out, so you are supposed to take it easy until then or the tires can rotate on the rim. I do not know what they use.
  17. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...st=0entry2992 I cannot see why the 4 side electrode plugs will not last for 60k miles.
  18. The white dial kit Ray bought had a tool to lift the needles off. Nothing special - just a bent piece of metal. I should add that my local dealer takes the position that if the cluster is opened then the warranty on the cluster is over.
  19. As has been said, watch out for ebay remote keys. Worthless without the 24 digit paper tag. Key learning code comes from from - Atlanta. They do need your car. Cannot program otherwise.
  20. B&M works by changing the pivot point of the shift lever. The oem normal Boxster lever pivots in the center line of the journals. The B&M pivots above the journals. Both the B&M and oem shift levers are the same length. The 550 does it the old fashioned way - the length of the lever is reduced by about an inch - it still pivots in the center line of the journals just like the normal Boxster lever. The shift throws on the B&M and the 550 are shorter - they just go about it two different ways. The EVO short shift does it a third way - the bottom of the lever is extended with a part/extension bolted on the end of the lever.
  21. One of our local 2003 Boxster owners just replaced the 3 trim pieces without destroying them. He removed the glove box and was able to get to the T10 screws for the long piece. He removed the steering wheel and the trim plate under the instrument cluster to get to the back of the 2 small pieces.
  22. Physically, I cannot see why they would not fit. But I think you are right that the valving is different. The struts for a Boxster have 986 part numbers and the 996 struts have 996 part numbers. If the specs were the same there would not be different sets of part numbers. Jeff
  23. Which connector did you get? The black or blue. On another subject. I think this is the connector and the cover for the connector that plugs into the connector that goes to the cruise control stalk.
  24. You get it from Becker. http://www.beckerautosound.com/ Click on What's New.
