  1. From what little I know forced induction on a motor with an 11 to 1 compression ratio is like playing with a hand grenade, but it sure was fun while it lasted. Rami's twin turbo 3.2 has 365 hp but I do not know if that figure has been bumped up for drive train loss. http://www.ramis-porsche.com/index.htm The twin turbo 3.2 that was on the cover of Excellence last year is for sale. On the dyno the highest hp at the wheels was 318. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...item=2475466489 When the 996 went from 3.4 to 3.6 in 2002 I was hoping that the 2003 face lift Boxster S would get the 3.4. The Boxster is a heavy car. Wish there was some way to remove 1,000 pounds and still have a street car
  2. They say about 20 pounds lighter. I have seen several and the fit was not that great. We spent a long time trying to adjust one on a turbo and still could not get even gaps.
  3. Look under the special offers section on this board. We filmed many projects and put them on 3 DVDs. Henry makes them - I just hold the tools. I think all were sold but Henry can make another. The DVD shows how to do it with the stalk or switch and the tips I have learned over the years so you do not break expensive parts.
  4. It is unique. Tool bad the rear service cover is not flat.
  5. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...st=0entry6089
  6. The noise is from the dog teeth, which haved a point to them. Do it enough and the points gets rounded or you can break a tooth. If it is shifting from 2nd to 3rd fine I would not worry about it. The only way to know for sure is if the transmission is taken apart. Since Porsche does not sell parts for your transmission not much sense to take it apart.
  7. On a Boxster we have to remove the visor first in order to remove the A pillar trim. Think it is the same on a 996.
  8. If you see the temp display then the OBC is already on - nothing more needs to be done except the retrofit so you can see all the other displays.
  9. I looked at the 993 instructions on Robin's site and it is much more involved than a 996/Boxster. Your 996 already has the outside air temp sensor. It also has the OBC - but it needs to be turned on with the PST2. No parts are required to get the outside temp display. Most dealers turned them on before the customer picked up their then new car - but once in a blue moon someone has a 996/Boxster and it had not been turned on. Some dealers will turn it on for free and some will charge $50 for pushing the buttons on the PST2. Get the OBC turned on first. Then let me know if you want to do the retrofit so that you can see all the additional displays.
  10. Ian in the UK just replace one 2 days ago. Call another local dealer or Sunset in Oregon. They are about $30 each. There were over 1,000 cables in stock a month or so ago.
  11. I do not know of any DIYer instructions. There are instructions in the shop manual but they hard for me to follow. At my dealer Manny does the top replacements. I have watched him for about 5 minutes at different times working on different cars. He tells me it is "easy." Would like to film this in the San Jose area.
  12. I have the instructions for the original (pre 2003) sport exhaust. I have not yet seen instructions for the new style. Send me an email if you want it. Jeff
  13. We made a DVD of several installs but you do not need it if your are handy with tools. Can you see the outside temp display now and do you want to do it with the button or stalk?
  14. Does the key that is not working properly start the car? If you have the second remote key does it work properly?
  15. I cannot think of anything off the top of my head other than the gear inside the transmission. Maybe Mark has an idea. Did you inspect the 1998 transmissions for damage before you put them in?
  16. Very good. How about a link to where you can get the spray paint matched to your color code.
  17. If you want to use the shift buttons to control something then you need to buy a tip air bag spiral spring unit to replace your manual transmission unit. When guys get a good ebay deal on a tip steering wheel for their manual transmission car we use the shift buttons to control the trip computer. The tip unit is on the left and you can see it has an extra connector.
  18. Each LCD display has a bulb behind it. You have to pull the cluster to replace the bulb.
  19. Put some tape around the the fitting for the tube. Use a flair nut wrench if you have one. Hope the fittings are not cranked on very tight or your points are in jeopardy. But there is Testors.
  20. When I started Boxstering in 1999 there were complaints about the door release not working. Have not seen this in years as most were fixed under warranty. But it was the inside release - not the outside. There are instructions on how to fix the inside release. Send me a direct email if you want a copy. Might help you figure out something. If it does not then we can figure out what parts you need for the outside release. Jeff
  21. I do not know if those reference marks are going to help you or confuse you. Set both reference marks on both transmissions. Bolt on the V-lever arms. See if the male ball on the lever is where it should be for the matching female part on the push rod for the clam shell. If it is then the reference marks are good for something. If not, then do what Mark says. This is the service position. The clam shell is in it's highest position. Operate the a transmission with the drill until the the ball for the clam shell push rod joint aligns so you can pop them together. Watch that the push rod with the plastic joint on the other end of the lever does not get hung up on something or you can break the plastic joint. Repeat for the transmission on the other side. You should then be able to pop the female plastic joints onto the male balls bolted to the roof. Stick cables into the drive motor with the clips. Have someone operate the dash switch an inch at a time while you watch how things are working.
  22. Diversity is additional antenna wires. It is covered in the most recent Boxster and Cayenne tech intro booklets. Check with Loren for a 996.
  23. Ok, the pointed bottom part of the Porsche crest on the center cap points to the rubber valve stem. In which of the 5 holes do you put the locking wheel bolt. The one closest to the valve stem?? I have removed my caps, bolts, and wheels so many times over the years that I do not remember, or I will lose points. Long time ago someone said the guards red touch up paint is the same - but I do not know if this is true.
  24. I did not even notice that. Orient/Gary is a concours judge and has S brakes on his 996 so he is good with things like that. If you swap the cross-over tube with the bleed nipples and mar the red coating then Gary might take off points. :o
