  1. It would be interesting to see if there is yet another bulletin about the seal(s) issue. However, ordering 4 bolts for the crankcase, and 3 bolts for the intermediate shaft flange is nothing new. http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.a...F-BCBEA378353F} I have made a green line to 1 of the 3 bolts for the flange. The bolts are not supposed to be reused. I have made a yellow line to the 4 bolts on the rear of the crankcase. So he has the triple wammy. Leaks from the intermediate shaft seal, rear main seal, and the crankcase bolts.
  2. That 03 number is the current version for 1999-2002. Retail is $98. I assume the original version ended in 00. 2003 up has a different part number. This is the horizontal one like on my 1997.

The USA/Canada parts sheet shows a drawing of the levers, but there is no part number. Instead, you have to buy the assembly to get the levers. The ROW parts sheet has part numbers just for the levers. If have not checked to see if Loren's part numbers are the same for a Boxster.
  4. An article was posted yesterday on the technical section site of PCA. "The side intake snorkel is functional. The main purpose of it is to flow cooler ambient air to the engine. Should this be removed you would be drawing hotter air from the engine compartment than outside of it. These temps are much higher in the engine compartment than the 996. Basically the cooler the intake air the better. Much like the purpose of an intercooler on a turbo. It cools down the hot intake air that gets heated from the turbo itself. Granted the side intake is not actually cooling the air, it draws in cooler air. Scott Slauson - PCA WebSite - 7/3/2004" Peter was the Boxster technical advisor up until a few months ago. Scott took over because Peter did not have the time to answer all the questions. I do not know Scott, but I have known Peter for 5 years since he works at my local dealer.   5. If the battery was disconnected the windows can act funny and one touch not work. After the battery is hooked up I run them up and down with the switch a few times to get one touch to work again.
  6. Horizonal vs vertical is why I said they look different. I have worked on 1997 and 1998 and they were horizontal. Recently worked on a 1999 but I did not pay attention. I had always assumed that the vertical design started production when the e-gas cars came out for MY00. But if yours is vertical and it is the original then my assumption is wrong. And in looking at the parts list 1997-98 has a different part number than 1999-02. The vertical one was on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...TRK%3AMEWA%3AIT Even the vertical one goes bad and you get smoke out the exhaust. The vertical part currently ends in 03, so that means that it is the third design. There was one that ended in 02 but it was deleted and replaced by 03.
  7. I also have in the back of my mind that if a brake light bulb is out the cruise will not work. Also, if there is something is wrong with the brake light switch. But I would think the green indicator light would not come on if that is the problem. I could be dreaming, but it is easy enough to see if the brake lights work and rule that out as the cause.
  8. That is funny. The measuring mandrel does look like something to play airhockey with. Maybe that is why some OPCs in the UK do not know about it. :D The Porsche Club Great Britian had a meeting with Porsche Cars GB on the 29th over the RMS issue. No one on the UK boards are holding their breath In the UK Porsche itself now sells an extended warranty that covers the RMS. The cost of the warranty is more than the cost of a seal replacement. Apparently no other independent company wanted to insure it.
  9. No clue about Belgium. However the first year Boxster, 1997, is just like you car. One touch on the passenger side window only works down, not up. Then for 1998-2004 it works both up and down.
  10. Strange. They just do things differently at some Porsche dealers in the UK. Here is another report, this time from Riaz on the UK Boxster board. "Dropped the car off at Hatfield OPC this morning, they phoned earlier to cancel the loan car as it was not back yet, so the choice was no loan car or delay the RMS replacement. Went armed with printouts, they had not seen or heard of the feeler guage and the seal is NOT a new part, just the one upgraded four years ago. The car has been booked in for three days (tiptronic)." He used the word feeler gauge because in a prior post I said the measuring mandrel was like a large feeler gauge. If the crankshaft has moved then putting in another seal is not going to cure the problem. You have to either take the engine apart and realign the crankshaft, or simply replace the engine. I have never sent a report of an engine being replaced due to the RMS on a UK board. They just keep on replacing the seal, over and over. I guess the English are use to cars that leak oil. :D
  11. Good. We can get the straight scoop from an EE. A charger puts out 12 plus volts so you would think it would work. Is your charger the automatic type that shuts off when the charger senses the battery is charged. That is what I have, but I do not think it is automatic in the start mode. Also my charger will not charge in the automatic mode if the battery is completely dead, there is a switch to put it in a manual mode so the battery will start charging. Don't know if this helps. When the electric releases first came out I asked a mechanic if you could use the little red post when a battery cable had been disconnected. He said yes, that the post had its own circuit and you did not need a connected battery to complete the circuit. Then a few weeks ago a 996 owner with electric releases removed the battery to replace it, and left the front trunk open. Someone closed it on him. He tried to use his new battery on the post and it did not work. Ended up having to use the emergency release cable. So what the mechanic told me must not be true. I have the 2001 wiring diagrams, first year of the electric releases, but the way Porsche puts them together is very hard for a history major to follow.
  12. You should, but I have reused it. You have to order it as a separate part because it is not included with the filter. They are about 25 cents.

  14. I do not remember ever seeing a bulletin on the separator. The part number has changed a few times over the years. The version on the newer cars looks different than a 2.5. If your parts guy likes you and knows what he is doing he can search the history of an old part on PET. I do not remember if it shows dates.
  15. Here is a diagram I forgot I had that might help if you can see it. You use the tool on #7 and rotate it until it touches #8. Then you slide the belt off #3. Porsche says to slide it off #8. Makes no difference. After we do a belt change we start the car with the cover removed to make sure we did not screw up.
  16. As a former history major, all I remember about electricity is Ben Franklin and a kite and a key. I have a charger with a switch. 2 or 10 amps for charging, and then 55 amps to start a car. I would not try to attach a 50 amp charger to that red jumper thing in the fuse box. I cannot believe you did not fry something. It is for opening the trunk, not charging the battery. We had a local 2001 owner with a monster stereo and his battery died and could open the front trunk. He did not have a spare battery, so he used a 9 or 12 volt adapter you plug into the wall. Hope someone has a better response than me.
  17. I have replaced 4 belts on different Boxsters and it is easy. Since the cover is off slide the seats forward so you have room. You need a 24mm tool. If you are strong you can use a 24mm box end wrench. When I am by myself I use a 24mm socket on the end of a 2 foot breaker bar for leverage. Put the tool on the nut on the spring loaded tensioner pulley and rotate clockwise. To the left and a little below is an idler pulley. You crank on the tool so that both pulleys touch each other and so the belt is loose enough to remove. In the shop manual Porsche has a numbered sequence of how to get the belt off and on the 8 pulleys. I do it a different way. Above the idler pulley is a deflector roller. With both pulleys touching each other slide the belt off the deflector roller, then release your tool and remove the belt. When you put the new belt on the belt goes on the deflector roller last. Loren has instructions in the 996 DIYer section. 996 and Boxster are the same.
  18. If you remember report back in a month and let us know if it was the oil/vapor seperator. Porsche has changed the design so you should have the newest version. They do go bad. My dealer has nice service advisors but they do not work on cars. I talk to the guys in the shop. My dealer can have 140 cars at a given time waiting to get fixed and they were around as a Porsche dealer when I use to ride my bicycle over there to look at the then new 914s. When I have talked to them about smoke out the exhaust the first thing they say is the separator since that is the most common issue.
  19. I watched it being done on a Boxster at a tech session. It is not a DIYer. You need a lif, PST2, and a pressure gun that injects the fluid into a hole in the bottom of the transmission. Nothing like I have seen before. When he removed the bottom plug I expected fluid to pour out. It is the fill plug. They stick a tube up the hole into the transmission and inject the fluid. Then you check the level with another plug.
  20. In order to make the roof move the car needs to think the hand brake is on. That is done via an electrical switch on the brake lever when it is pulled up. The switch was crappy on the early cars, and a new style switch came out a few years ago. When the top does not work. Start the car and pull up on the brake lever. If you do not see the hand brake warning light in the instrument cluster go on then that is the problem.
  21. I have been in the UK Boxster board for several years and I read the message board for the Porsche Club of Great Britian. Also the UK board Pistonheads. UK owners are treated differently than US owners is my impression, starting with your 2 year warranty and our 4 years.   22. Pull off the right trim panel that is covered with carpet and you will find the connector. Starting in 2003 Porsche put tape on the end of the connector. We tap into those wires for power. If you want to get fancy you can buy a cell phone connector from Becker that plugs into the existing connector. Loren has posted the color codes for the wires or you can check them with a volt meter.
  23. To power devices we use the cell phone connector behind the bat wing. It has 4 wires and you can get constant or switched 12 volts. And it is fused.
  24. The fan on each side should come on. The easiest thing for you to check are the fuses. There are 2.
  25. Maybe you will get lucky with just the cap. The newest version is on the left and the prior version on the right.
