  1. You are mixing things. With TrafficPro1, which was made for many cars, you need to move a wire when it is installed on a Boxster if you have an amp in the trunk. There is also the reverse wire, another issue. I guess with $400 from Crutchfield we get more questions. One of our local guys, Patrick, will have the Crutchfield unit here in a few days.
  2. Pics from the tech session. Taken by Vince. When in doubt, replace the cap. Like Loren says.
  3. Years ago I was going to buy a pressure tester made by Stant with all the adapters but it was too expensive for the few times I would need it. No idea what Kragens has. Our threaded cap is the same as VW. In fact, my January 1997 original cap has a the VW/Audi logo on it. Do it the cheap way and drive around until the car is warm and unscrew the cap and see if you hear the hiss. You might simply just have a bad cap. If you went to the cooling tech session in SUNNYVALE a few months ago you would know this. The cap on the left is the current one. The one on the right is the former one. My old VW cap is not in the picture. The new cap is said to seal better so you do not dump coolant on the ground. If you already have the 01 cap then ignore what I said.
  4. You did a Mt. Hamilton drive and did not invite the other local Boxster owners? Sure was hot yesterday and going up hill makes it worse. Sounds like a simple boilover.
  5. Need to see a picture of the part David. The oval like housing for the mirror is plastic and it folds away when hit so you must mean a different part.

  7. If you look at your stickers they have a part number on them. Even the Mobil 1 sticker on my Boxster has a part number.
  8. Grab it with padded pliers and twist 90 degrees counterclockwise and it just falls off. There is no set or locking screw. It is a standard break-away mirror in case a head hits it. You are probably not turning hard enough because you think you might break something. It does take some force. You might ask a local glass shop to do it for you.
  9. You need to read the messages again. What you say looks like a drain plug is the fill plug. That is why there is a round hole in the stress plate that is shaped like a triangle. So you can remove the fill plug through the plate.
  10. 996 606 160 01. It is an expensive part.
  11. The standard shift knob is just a tight friction fit - no set screw. You need to pull harder. You can also grab the knob and give it a good twist back and forth. Then pull. This expands the plastic sleeve that is keeping it in place. Like Loren says, watch out when it suddenly comes off or you can hit yourself in the face. Aileen has done so many B&M installs that she can do it blind folded.

  14. On one of our work on cars days a Boxster brought that oil and we put it in. Over the years we have put in other things not 'approved' by Porsche, depends on what the owner brings. I am happy to say all cars survived. It would not bother me if it was my car.
  15. We made a DVD of that install on Henry's 2000 2.7. If the install instructions have not changed for 2003 then use the 996 instructions, not the Boxster. There was a model year change to the bridge plug that you hook up the wires to. This is noted on the 996 instructions but not the 986 instructions. I use padded pliers. The shop manual says to rotate the mirror shaft counter but it really does not matter which direction you go. Henry does it by hand.
  16. You know, I can always sent Larry out to Texas. This is how my front trunk lid was opened last year after I was backed up into by a truck.
  17. Revised windstop clips I needed to replace the passenger side clip on Dave's 1998 windstop which is on my 1997 Boxster. A bulletin was issued on May 25, 2004. The clips have been changed as of March production with a thinner plastic leaf spring, to reduce the chance of breaking. I replaced one or both sides on my original 1997 windstop for this reason. New part numbers. 986 561 737 01 01C and 986 561 738 01 01C. I wanted to take a picture of the difference, so the parts guy gave me all they had it stock to look Author Tool Pants Category Boxster (986) - Common Fixes and Repairs Submitted 09/02/2004 07:05 PM

For $2 the old style was fine with me. Do not drive with a broken windstop clip or you might see it in your rear view mirror as it takes flight.
  19. I am waiting for Tim to give me some dates. He always wants to know what subjects to cover. It think I will tell him OBDII. Let us know if the $159 sensor is correct for a 2.5.
  20. That and you said the cluster and interior lights and windows worked for a while. If the gas flap is locked then that indicated the alarm was on when the battery was disconnected. If you give up trying to unlock the levers with a screwdriver then you might want to remove them. You see 3 plugs on the side of the housing. Remove those plugs and behind each is an allen screw. Give the allen screws a few turns then you lift the lever housing up. Then you can rotate the locking cam with your finger. Or, you are going to have to go for the emergency release cable.
  21. Wonder what will happed if a special edition or a Carrera GT needs to be painted. There must be a formula - it is just another shade of silver metallic. Guess it takes a while to get in the system.
  22. I'm confused now. Is your battery hooked up?
  23. I have seen a lot of cars in 5 years and some cars have this and some do not. Next car I see that has it I'm going to watch the top go up and down and see what is causing it. If you had a warranty it might be worth a shot at the dealer, but some dealers consider this normal wear and tear..
  24. Eric said M7Z. My old eyes. Your paint gal is correct.
  25. For the local guys. Tim Benson at FastLane Porsche has said he will do another tech session. He has a PST2. I need to set the date with Tim. On the first tech sesion, at Tim's place, years ago, was set up because a guy from Monterey said the San Jose group did not go over the hill for events. So, I set something up there and the guy does not show. But there were 20 other Boxsters.
