  2. Your 3.6 uses 986 606 125 01, which is also the latest e-gas version used on the Boxster. Nader has a 1998 which is not e-gas so it will not work on your car. If you go to the October 9th tech session you might find someone to swap. I sent an email notice to your atari address but it came back.
  3. We did film it on a base Boxster, including a brake fluid change. Also filmed the 30k service on a Boxster and 996. Need to sit down with Henry to see if the video is good enough for a another DVD.
  4. Try several import car parts places. We have a local one that sells aftermarket brake pads for $45. We put a front set in a few months ago on a base Boxster and the owner says they are fine. They are not fancy race pads for $200 or have the Porsche logo but fine for normal street driving. They also have the holes for the wear sensors. I think they are sold under different names in the aftermarket. The name on the back of the pad is RMSA, which I think is Remsa of America owned by TRW. http://www.remsaofamerica.com/default.htm The picture shows the box and 2 of the pads on the left. The single pad on the right is the old pad. The name on the box is Qualitee, but I have seen the same pads in a box with a different name.
  5. That sounds like what Horst on the Becker board said. Horst said the reverse signal is used to increase the accuracy of the system. If you drive 100 feet forward and then 50 feet backwards without the reverse signal wire hooked up, then the system thinks you drove 150 feet forward. An upcomming turn might therefore not be announced at the right time. It is easy enough to hook up the reverse wire. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2963 And when the car is in reverse the direction arrow changes to reverse.

I have been looking for a cheap 996 cluster to put on my Boxster for a long time so I can have the extra 2 gauges. :P The front face of the cluster can be removed, but Porsche does not sell a replacement part and neither does VDO. You can pry the original plastic trim rings off to replace the clear plastic lense, but when the overlay is already glued on, I have never tried to do that. If the front face is removed from the cluster then you can pull out all the clear plastic lenses from the back, which will end up damaged since the are also glued in place, but you do not care since the have glue on them. Then find a plastic shop make new lenses of the most thin plastic they have. My frank suggestion, since you used super glue and not silicon or tape, is to ask a local speedometer shop if they can fix the damage.
  7. Are the overlay metal trim rings on/glued to the cluster face? Or did you pull them off when you realized what happened?
  8. Your car has 3 horns. 2 behind the front bumper cover on the passenger side for the steering wheel horns. 1 on the drivers side next to the battery for the alarm. They have nothing to do with each other. Check fuse B3. If it is good then swap the horn relay with another relay that has the same part number. Yellow line is to the horn relay in position #10 on the relay tray. If both of the above are ok then need to know if you have a 4 spoke steering wheel.
  9. Post a picture of the damage so I can figure out what you can do. Porsche only sells bulbs and knobs for the cluster, nothing else.
  10. Funny you should mention Harbor Freight since I bought this magnetic bit holder from there years ago and never used it. I think it will fit.
  11. Good point and maybe one of the days I will get to the bottom of something. On my 1997 my check engine light would go on then off from 2000-20002. Each time the mechanics I know would check the fault code it was the oxygen sensor after the cat and I do not care about that sensor. I thought oxygen sensors were covered under the Federal and longer California emission warranty. Back then when I looked at warranty booklet I saw oxygen sensors listed, and I remember something about a 5 year Federal and 7 year California Warranty. So in 2002, one week before my car was 5 years old, I took it in to get what I thought would be "free" replacement oxygen sensor under either emission warranty. When I got charge the service guy said that the emission warranty covered parts that cost at least X dollars and the $180 sensor was less than X. I do not remember seeing a dollar limit exclusion in the warranty booklet. Air flow sensors are also listed in the booklet. Last year when my car was 6 years old it was replaced in order to pass smog because my check engine light was on. I paid $396 for the sensor - the cost of the part - plus paid to have it put in.. I did not even think to ask if it was cover under the 7 year warranty.
  12. It is a know issue and Porsche would replace them if you still had a warranty. They came out with a revised wheel bolt. Just paint them. Local 996 owner Gary paints them every time he removes them. He found matching silver spray paint at Oarchard Supply Hardware.

  14. I took this picture today at my dealer because I may be replacing a switch on a local car. They do not like the factory screwdriver because it is too big. So they took a plastic cap, filled it with epoxy, and stuck a very small flat head bit in it. Van made this shop made tool.
  15. Henry does not have the factory amp in the trunk. Patrick with a 1999 put in TrafficPro and the cd changer in at the same time.

  17. I was Stevens Creek to pick up my Carrera GT book and spoke to Peter, and guess what. They had a Carrera GT in the shop for a clutch replacement so he showed me the key. He has never open one yet to see if the inside is the same as a Boxster key head. He thought it would might work on a 2 button Boxster key head. Take the pill out of the Boxster and put it in the the CGT and program the CGT head for the Boxster car. I was not about to ask him if I could open the CGT key head on a customer's car and see if it lookes the same as a Boxster. But not on a 1997 Boxster as that is the strange year.
  18. I spoke to Peter today and he did not think it was worth the time and money. You would have to reprogram the 2.5 DME for a 996, then wire the resonance flap so that it would open. Maybe a 4 hp increase.

  20. Connector I bought is 8N0 971 636 which like a lot of connectors is a VW/Audi part. The metal female pins are 999 650 103 12. I bought 5 since all switches have 5 male pins. $4 for all the parts. This is Sandy's picture.
  21. This is the door panel removal tool I use to separate the 4 joints, and it sounds like James has the same kind of tool. Funny, but I bought it years before I owned a Boxster. Mark likes to use the pry lever in the tool kit. Like James said, you are working by feel to release the joints from the clamshell if your top is stucked in the closed position. And it takes some force to separate those joints.
  22. Before Bahntech there was TouchTop, invented by local 2001 Boxster owner Ed Brakus. Ed tried his test version on my 1997 Boxster years ago because he wanted to see if there was a difference between the years. TouchTop was a simple timer. I think Ed said it was set to 60 seconds for the Boxster and 996. A Boxster only need 12 seconds to open or close the top, and the 996 Cab takes longer. So on a Boxster the electronic timer would contine to run even after the trop stopped moving. It was originally $100, then $200. Ed sold them for a few years then stopped.
  23. Reverse wire. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?a...st=0#entry13886 Behind the battery is a 3" rubber grommet that you can run wires. Behind where the changer goes is another grommet to run wires. So you can run a wire from the passenger compartment into the front trunk.
  24. Buy the litronic retrofit kit 000 044 900 41. Brandywine has it for $1,095. The install instructions on this board list all the part numbers included in the kit, but you have to be a contributing member to see it.
