  1. All 986 tops fit all year. 1997 had the external 'ears' for the RTS. The glass is a part you can buy. The glass on an S top cost more, I guess because of the silver trim. To mount a top 2 the car you need 2 inserts and 2 bolts. People call them spinlocks.
  2. Why can't you put on the replacement door panel and leave your existing side air bag hooked up and where it is? Try it and see if the replacement panel will fit over the air bag. The air bag is attached to the door, not the door panel. Would be funny if it blows up however. My 1997 Boxster does not have side air bags, as that started in 1998. I thought perhaps you could use a 1997 Boxster air bag control unit on a car with side air bags but the plug is different. The other way to trick the air bag control unit into thinking there is an air bag hooked up is to use a resistor with the correct ohm rating. Where do your replacement door panels come from, and what is the model year?
  3. This is a debated subject, like what oil or filters to use. I started using anti-seize many years ago on every vehicle I've owned because I experienced a steel plug welded to an aluminum head on my first Fiat X/19. 3 of the 4 plugs came out fine. When I removed the 4th plug the threads came out with it and I had to pull the head for a spark plug insert. It was a Champion plug with nickel plated threads. The Fiat is a mid-engine, but it is harder to replace the plugs on that car than a Boxster. When I replaced the plugs on my Boxster I used anti-seize. When I have replaced the plugs on local Boxsters I don't. My dealer does not. Porsche issued a bulletin on June 14, 1991 that states not to use a lubricant on spark plugs. Anti-seize is a lubricant. What does this 1991 bulletin have to do with a Boxster/996 that did not come out until years later? Well, until Porsche comes out with another bulletin you follow the old bulletin. If you go on the Bosch site it says anti-seize is not needed because their plugs have nickel plated threads. Replacing the plugs on a Boxster is much easier than a 996, as the Boxster does not have the exhaust manifold and heat shield in the way. We remove the tire and the plastic shield in the wheel well to get to all the plugs. To replace the belt on a Boxster you just slide the seats forward and remove the service cover. Porsche says to replace it at 60k miles. I have replaced the belt on four 60k cars and there was nothing wrong with the old belt, but we did it anyway since the owner had already purchased a new belt. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...t=0entry10610 1991 Bulletin
  4. Here are some out of the car. I do not know of an aftermarket shop manual, that is why we started filming projects last year. Haynes has implied for a long time that there might be one. Peter Smith at my dealer was asked to make a manual but he did not think it would work out for a DIYer.
  5. Do you mean the litronic retrofit kit sold by Porsche that comes with the control unit and wiring harness?
  6. Since you most likely have a warranty take it to your dealer and have them check it out. I have a leak from the seals in my power steering rack with my January 1997. Easy to tell. There is nothing on the ground. The fluid fills up the boot. Remove the small clamp and it runs out of the boot.
  7. How much power steering fluid did you add. It is normal hear hear a noise in a garage while turning the wheel. I even think it is in the owners manual. Unless you have a Lexis.
  8. When you retrofit the litronics you are supposed to put in 15 amp fuses if the car does not already have them. I am on the UK message boards and they say a lit retrofit is a problem because of your MOT inspecion and the need for washers and suspension level sensors. They even say you cannot buy the kit from your OPC for these reasons. Jeff
  9. Ok, stereo experts. For the Boxster rear speaker kit where the speakers are hooked up to the amp instead of the radio head. Can you use the 6 channel amp from a car with the DSP option 680 which is digital. Or, must you only use the non digital 6 channel amp.
  10. So much for that theory. There have reports of seal leaks from tip owners. Redcab a 996 owner on rennlist. Riaz a Boxster owner on the UK Boxster board. And 996 owner Kirby who is on this board and lives in my area. Tips are just not as popular as a manual transmission, but tips can leak as well. A manual transmission engine is the same as the automatic transmission engine except for the wiring. Edit to include billgee with a 2002 S tiptronic. He is from Florida but on the UK board. His seal was just replaced at 27,000 miles.

  13. You might want to try the German Bosxter message board. There is a technical section. They even let me on their board and I am from California. Maybe that is the other one mentioned in your manual. From what you said the changer has power from the Mexico. No idea why you cannot get sound.
  14. Per the TSB a crack in the oil filler hose will trigger P1123 and you will see oil on the crankcase. A new style hose went into production for MY01. Sounds like you figured out the cause of the check engine light.
  15. There is something wrong. The Becker Silverstone 2660 is identical to the Porsche CDC-3. If you look at the sticker on a CDC-3 it even has the Becker model number on it. The CDC-3 has a 993 part number on it because it was even used in the 993 which I think had the Porsche 210 radio made by Becker We have put in many 2660 and CDC-3 in 1997-2002. Our 1997-2002 factory radios in the US are the Porsche 210 and 220 made by Becker. In Europe they are 21 and 22, same radios as the US except for the frequency. Every time we have hooked up a 2660/CDC-3 to a 210 or 220 it worked. It even works with the Traffic Pro sold by Becker which is identical to the unit sold by Porsche. Within the past few weeks 2 local Boxster owners have changed their 220 for a Traffic Pro and both have the CDC-3 changer. I do not know the Becker Mexico MD since mini disc is not popular in the US. Do you have to tell the radio that there is a changer for the changer to work? On the 210 and 220 and Traffic Pro we just plug in the changer and the radio finds it. I was going to say maybe you have a bad changer, or maybe the cable is bad, but you say it works with the original radio. Make sure the manual for the Mexico says it works with the 2660. I see your message on the Becker board and maybe Horst will have a suggestion.
  16. I bought it from Skyway Tools in Chico, CA for $12 plus shipping. http://www.skywaytools.com/ At lot of places sell it. There are 2 sizes for round pins, medium and large. You need the medium which is 9701. Do a google search for Sir Tool 9701.
  17. Can you give me the part number for the amp you used. Better yet, take a picture of the white sticker. Is the Boxster connector in fact empty for 6, 16, 5, and 15? The pin numbering on the 2003/4 amp is different as you found out. If my part number for the pins I think fit the amp connector are correct then I have an aftermarket removal tool made by Sir Tools for those pins. Your dealer will have the official tool so maybe they will let you borrow it for a few minutes. I do not know if the amp has a secondary lock you slide before you can use the tool to remove pins. First pic is the Sir Tool extractor in another connector that uses the round pins I think are also used in the amp connector. Second pic is the factory tool, but my dealer also has a set of pin removal tools with blue handles that say Porsche on them.
  18. ABS/PSM for street cars is designed for us idiot drivers under slippery conditions and panic situations. Not for maximun braking on a dry race track. From the PCA tech articles, when you take a street car on the track with consumer gadgets and shove it around you can get things to happen as the systems were not designed for the track. Here is the main link to the PCA tech section if my specific link to the same issue did not work. I am not a member but can see all the messages. You should search on ABS and PSM there - I did not mean on renntech. http://www.pca.org/tech/index.html From reading some of the messages ABS can stop working as it is confused as to what is going on. My pad wear sensors are also out and tied to the brake lines. The wiring diagram does not show any connection between the wear sensors and the ABS/PSM control unit.
  19. I am not the electrical or stereo guy but I will take a guess. Looks like you need to cut off the internal keys on the 996 amp so you can get the Boxster female connector on. That is my first pic. I looked at the amp wiring diagrams for a 2000 Boxster and a 996 and they look the same to me for the pins. I was a history major so do not trust me. I scanned them so send me a direct email as you cannot do attachments with PM. There are 20 pins on each amp but not all the pins are used and/or work. To confuse you a bit the Boxster did come with a 6x40 amp with the DSP option which got you rear speakers. On both amps pin 6 is the positive rear left speaker. 16 is the negative for the left. On both amps pin 5 is the positive rear right speaker. 15 is the negative for the right. Your Boxster female amp connector should have emptly holes for pins 6, 16, 5, and 15 if I am correct. The second pic has white lines to 6 and 16, and yellow lines to 5 and 15. Pins 1-10 are on the bottom row and 11-20 on the top. In the pic you count from right to left. The round pins that I think fit in the male amp connector are 999 652 568 22. The third pic has a yellow line to a pair of those pins. Let us know if you can confirm this info.

  21. A deviated steering wheel, but the colors are reversed from your 4 spoke. I saw a red 3 spoke steering wheel air bag on ebay a few days ago that also included the passenger air bag and was going to tell you about it, but I thought you wanted a black air bag. Is that where you got it? I kind of like it since I have Boxster red interior with a black 3 spoke and air bag. Maybe I should have bid on it.

  23. Our local group has put in aftermarket pads but not that brand. Axxis is the US distrubutor of PBR pads, an Australian company. Looks like they come in 4 flavors. When their pads were sold under the Repco I used the semi-metallic in my 2 X1/9s with no problems other they would put grooves in the rotors. http://www.axxisbrakes.com/products.htm http://www.epsparts.com/category/chassisnumbertable/ If you want to try an inexpensive pad for a daily driver you might try Remsa. We put a set in in Patrick's 2.5 last year and he likes them and cost about $40. This brand is packaged and sold in the aftermarket under different names. The box his pads came in say Qualitee but I have seen the same pad in different boxes. The friction ratings are FE. Once of our local guys put in Hawk 'autocross' pads in his daily driver and I told him he would get noise. The ratings are GG, higher than the oem pads. Then he complained about noise. <_< I will have to ask if it has gone away now that he has some miles on them.
  24. I have looked at a few 997s and none had an option sticker I could find. Anyone know where it is or if there even is one. I started to pull the trunk carpeting out in the showroom to see if it was under there but I got caught. Saw another 997 today and it had the sticker.
