  1. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...t=0entry10610 The local group has replaced a few 986/996 belts at 60k and they were all fine. The thing you do want to check is the condition of the bearings of all the pulleys since they are known to fail, but it is not common. This is a 996 recent belt change. Takes a few minutes on a 996 because you do not have to go through a service cover.
  2. I thought you needed the DSP control unit, but I guess not with PCMI.
  3. Yep, Paul in England has an imported LHD German spec 1997. He has a manual adjustment for the outside mirrors and, for that reason, no defrost switch on the dash. Turro, if you ordered a hardtop when the car was made then by default would you also get the electric mirrors and defrost switch? If you know. This is standard in the US. Paul says the plug for the rear window is there but I bet there are no wires to it - plus there is no switch and I bet no relay or fuse. More trivial now that we know the history of the car. What is wrong with the radio in the picture?

  5. PCMI is made by Siemens. Becker/Harman/Kardon or whatever the name is this week, is Traffic Pro and PCMII.
  6. If you want to use the oem shift then I guess you can grind the flat blade to the proper size while it is in the car. If I was doing this I would remove the shift tower assembly and then take it to a grinder. I assume Momo uses a set screw. If you are going with a B&M then you would grind it before you install it. You can buy the horseshoe trim boot from Gert and attach it to the Momo shift. Or you can use the oem boot. This is what Danny did in the middle picture - except he has a B&M and also cut down the shift lever. If you have the standard shift knob then you will have to cut the boot off and reuse it.
  7. You would have to grind the flat bladed shift levers used by Porsche and B&M to make them a smaller diameter. The boots shown it the link look nothing like what would fit a Boxster. This is a B&M and oem shift.
  8. There are ways to remove the crest. It is riveted on and you take a drill to the front of the crest to eliminate the attaching stud, or you remove the air bag cover and grind away the rivet. Normal people do not like to play around with an air bag. The silver crest was only used on 2000 for Boxster S and 996. Back then people wanted to replace the silver crest with a colored crest. That is when the colored 356 bonnet crest and stick-ons happened. I suggest you find someone with a 2000 3 spoke and swap the oem air bags. If you were local I would tell you to show up on a work on cars day, since that is where we do this stuff.
  9. Yep, no switch for the heated mirrors, which is also to defrost the rear glass window on a Boxster with a hard top. The switch is standard on a US Boxster. The owner who took the picture is in England, but he has a LHD Boxster. He just bought a hardtop and wants to know how to defrost the window. No switch to push.

  11. At our open house I looked up under the dash to see what was different but it was too dark. According to the parts list the top now has 2 relays instead of 1. There is a relay to open and another to close. If you were to put the homelink in then what would happen to the interior motion detector on a 986. The sales guy said the motion detector is now radar based so I guess that is why Porsche was able to use the eye locations for homelink.

  14. PNA 488 521 05. There were none in the US last time I checked, since they were given to the mechanics when they went to 987 school. Update. There were 130 of them in the US as of yesterday. If you want one then order it now.
  15. I was at Autozone today to have them check out my battery. 48 was back in stock and on the shelf. But, Mobil One 0W-40 and 15W-50 was not on the shelf, just the stickers on the empty racks. I wonder who is buying this stuff since it is not common, like a Toyota or GM products. STP has an oil filter listed for a Porsche. Nothing on the shelf. Would be interesting to see who actually makes a low production filter with the STP brand on it.
  16. There is an old bulletin for the Boxster that warns against removal because it is part of the crash protection. Years ago I found the site that did computer generated crash anaylsis for Porsche and they had a neat image of Boxster as if it had been hit in the front. Some of the AWDs dont have a spare - but they have a front differential.
  17. Never seen the DSP with PCM1. Where is your a/c display?
  18. US size 49 is a big 3 inches longer than a US size 48. You probably had the euro sized Moll, which I think is 80 Ah with a part number of 999 611 080 00, and euro size 92. The euro size 92 is a bit longer than a US size 48 but not as long as US size 49. A US 48 is about 10 3/4" and a US 49 about 13 3/4". The 80 Ah Moll 92 is about 12 1/4". I do not know of a US sized battery that is the same length as the euro 92. So you had to go with the smaller 48 or put a nut under the empty hole in the battery tray for the clamp for the larger 49. The specs of the 48 may actually be better than your Moll. Hard to compare because Moll does not have a US spec rating sticker, just amp hours. I have asked Johnson Controls for the amp hour ratings on their batteries but they never responded. The smallest battery is used on the GT3. I think your turbo has PCM so it gets a bigger battery. In Texas you can probably use two flashlight batteries. This is what Alex has on his 2001 turbo.
  19. This has generally been expained to me several times but it just seems to go in one ear and out the other. You can have a pending fault code but no check engine light. If the fault is detected again then the light comes on. Something like that. The other thing is that you are in the UK and the US OBDII system is different than yours, as is your emission system. There is actually a European OBD message board but I cannot find the link.
  20. Read my message #13 here. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2950 On the 1997 Boxster the last hole is threaded. For 1998 up the hole is there but there are no threads. The threads for that hole were eliminated for some strange reason. You can put a metric nut under the unthreaded hole if you want to use the 49. If you do this do not drop the nut or it might go into the water drain hole that is near the battery tray. Here is my 1997 battery tray and all 4 holes are threaded.
  21. You slide it to the passenger side a bit and then it falls out of the holder. If I remember correctly there is a slit in the carpet that permits you to do this so you do not have to remove the carpet.

  25. Good idea and they are not difficult to install. Ask if any questions. I always thought Suncoast and then Brandywine were selling them as a loss leader. My parts guy says current dealer cost is $1,210.94, unless Porsche has a special. At $1095 they are being given away.
