  2. If you are in the 0 of 180 then this is normal. For your coolant loss check this first. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1838
  3. Yes, my 986 red clip on the 987 at the new Boxster open house at Carlsen today. Next, I will try to put my 986 humps on a 987. Then the 986 hardtop to see how the 987 side window glass has changed Seems like the new cup holder thing might be good after all....
  4. We filmed 4 different installs on 4 different cars. Aileen was able to do it herself with the stalk with me watching, but I did have to help pull the Steering wheel off because her's was on tight. Ask your local 996/986 owners if they have done it and can help you.
  5. No guesses on the black box? :( Then try this one. What do you see on this 987 that you have not yet seen on a 987?

  7. Next time I am at RennWerks I'll ask what plugs they use. With multiple electrodes you are still going to get just one spark, to the electrode with the least electrical resistance. But once in a while someone claims you get multiple sparks. But I was a history major.... The benefit of multiple electrodes is that the plug does not have to be changed as often as a single electrode plug. As the electrode with the least resistance wears then the spark jumps to the next electrode with the least resistance. The 2.5 Boxster had 2 side electrodes, and were to be replaced at 30,000 miles. When the 2.7 and 3.2 came out Porsche switched to 4 electrode plugs, and increased the change interval to 60,000 miles. Then you get the platinum debate. Platinum last longer than copper, but does not conduct electricity as well as copper. It is said that the platinum plug with or without multiple electrodes is used to get that 100,000 mile plug. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread....k+plug+indexing http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread....k+plug+indexing
  8. If whatever fault code set off the light is not detected again then after a number of start/drive cycles the code is deleted. There is no 'delete all old codes' function on a PST2. They go away by themselves from the DME if not detected again under the parameters that set if off.
  9. If you are going to do this yourself then you need to remove the door panel and see what is going on inside. The noise is usually from a bad electric door lock actuator. The lack of window drop is from a bad window regulator or switch on the door handle. I am not sure if one is related to the other. You need the panel off so you can see what is the cause. Both are not uncommon problems.
  10. I am not going to debate the use of nitrogen in a street car. But I saw this Boxster at a tech session with green dust caps on the valve stems. The owner bought tires from Costco and said that they use nitrogen and put the green cap on, and it does not cost any more money. I'm glad the SUV in front of me with tires from Costco has the green cap. :P
  11. I do not think so anymore as the plugs now have multiple electrodes and centered in the combustion chamber, rather than to the side.
  12. What is the largest spare wheel I can fit in the rear trunk. :P I am thinking about a 987. Does it have a spare tire? Well, it is good to see a section for brakes, tires, wheels, and suspension. Brush up on your math for offset and spacer questions.
  13. For what it is worth, Porsche did the same thing with the early Boxsters. Owners manual said 8.25 liters with filter change. Then a few years later a bulletin came out that retroactively made it 8.75 liters or 9.25 quarts.

  15. The new style 2003/4 sport exhaust will work on a 2002. The tequipment part number for the retrofit kit is 000 044 200 20. I am on a UK Boxster board and I know the OPCs in England cannot find the part number. I do not think it includes the switch - the reason being that there is a LHD switch and a RHD switch. On a LHD car the switch is to the left of the radio. On a RHD it is to the right of the radio. The switch has an icon of a tail pipe pointing down. If you buy the wrong sided switch then the tail pipe points in the wrong direction. You can buy the correct sided switch as an additional part. For the switch to work you need to have the electrical and vacum part of the sport exhaust system installed. This takes many hours and most people elect to just bolt on the muffler so it is loud all the time. The bolt-on tail pipe is not included, as there are 3 different versions for the new style sport exhaust. I have seen but not heard the new style Boxster sport exhaust. The original style Boxster factory sport exhaust never sounded as good as the factory 996 sport exhaust. For the rest of your questions you would get a better response from one of the UK message boards.
  16. The transmission gear noise heard by the driver is one of the reasons Porsche uses the dual-mess flywheel. I was told it is because the way the gears are cut. At the Santa Cruz tech session the Monster Boxster had a lightweight flywheel and the owner did not complain about the noise. So cut your roof off and reverse the powertrain unit.
  17. Can't tell from the pic what it is. The letters you gave lok like a recycle code. Porsche part numbers usually start with 986 or 996. There are 6 height adjustments for the clamshell. But I have no clue why it is off when only when the top is down.
  18. I tried Fry's and Radio shack a long time time. They do have round pin electrical pin removal tools but none were even close. The AMP connector has an odd size metric pin used for European automotive apllications. So I went to Peter and he showed me the factory electrical tool kit. Then we measured the inside and outside diameter of the tool for the large round pins used for the litronic retrofit. I tried to order the factory tool with no luck. Then another mechanic I know showed me a Sir Tool catalog and the specs on their medium pin removal tool matched. Strange that Sir would discontinue the tool as it can be used on many other connectors used in the 996/986, such as the amp and cell phone connectors.
  19. I have not been in the engine compartment of a 987 yet, just seen drawings. The air box is way different than a 986. Have no idea if the 986 EVO unit will even work on a 987.
  20. They are side marker lights in the US, not turn signal lights. So they do not blink. They are turn signal lights in Europe. There is a 'hack' you can do to make a North American car blink with the turn signals. http://wa4ekg.home.att.net/996mods/sidemarkermod.html
  21. Hard to figure out a part over the internet when you cannot see it. If you do not have a picture how about a part number. Porsche is good about putting part numbers on things.
  22. Alienz, still having problems with your top? The top control/relay on ebay is for your year. It has been plugged into a car even if the seller says it is new. I can see the scratch marks on the electrical pins in the ebay picture that happens when a relay is plugged into the socket. When an electrical part is plugged in it is considered used, but that ebay one may work fine. Find another local 1997-1999 Boxster and swap relays and see if that is your problem.
  23. On a US car we have an unused cell pone connector below the radio which has switched and constant power. That is what I suggested Karl use. UK cars do not have this connector. You can get a volt meter and test wires in the radio area to see what is switched. The other thing, on UK cars, sometimes they are switched and sometimes they are live all the time. In the US the lighter is live all the time. Or, you can try something like this. http://www.pca.org/tech/tech_qa_question.a...6-23E723CB9E4A}
  24. If you remove the battery you will see a large round rubber plug. Make a hole in it to run your wire from the dash to the battery area. If you pull back the carpet where the cd changer is you will see another plug - do the same. Then you have a way to run wires from the dash/radio area into the front trunk.
  25. You can pry them out from the back with a small screw driver. Or, if you push hard enough on the front of the switch it will pop out the back of the trim piece. Or, on our work on cars days, sometimes when we pull the electrical connector off the back of the switch, the switch is pops out of the trim and it still attached to the connector. This is just like what happens when you push hard on the front of the switch.
