  1. I started Boxstering 6 years ago and the RMS issue was old news then. Long before Mobil 1 0W-40 came out. It ain't the oil.
  2. It is not a decal.
  3. Sealant is used instead of a gasket. Sealant is 000 043 203 73. I watched a mechanic remove the pan and it is really stuck on.
  4. It can be unbolted and removed. A local guy painted it while it was still bolted in place. He removed the padding and everything else he could get to. Then masked off the car and used a spray can of silver paint. He painted just the part of the rollbar you can see.
  5. The order guides have a diagram.
  6. The TSBs for the BOXSTER sport exhaust are on this board. The original 1997/02 and 2003/4 versions. Both say to remove the rear bumper cover. Most people do not. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...t=0entry12183
  7. I see a part number change for the cables starting for model year 2001.
  8. If you are sure there is no set screw. The standard shift knob does not have a set screw. Twist the shift knob hard back and forth so that the plastic sleeve expands a bit. Then pull. Then pull harder. I once saw a mechanic put one foot on each seat as he was standing in the car. He did not want to get hit in the face when the shift knob let go.
  9. The current part number I see listed for the control unit is 996 645 201 02 EFR. No clue on the connector
  10. On the 986 the mileage number is stored in the cluster.
  11. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?a...st=0#entry13363 If you have a 2001 then you have the original style cluster with light bulbs. The resistor thing is to prevent the light from going on. It takes a few minutes to turn it off with the PST2/PIWIS but if the control unit thinks there is a fault it will come back on sooner or later. You should have the fault code(s) read to see what it will take to fix it and if it is under warranty or goodwill.
  12. You should be ok with up to a quart too much. If there is way too much oil then it gets sucked into the intake and you will know it right away from the cloud out of the exhaust. If it really bothers you then dump oil out of the filter cartridge as suggested.
  13. I do not know about the liner. Justin's 2000 2.7 in the picture did not come with a liner. I do not think the base Boxster got the liner until 2001. I would assume if your car has a liner then it is reused with the glass window top. Would have to confirm with Steve. But since this top is so new he may not have done the retrofit on a car with a liner
  14. Justin sent me some more pictures. I asked Steve about having a strap to hold the back of the top up in the service position. In one of the pictures above the top is being held up by hand. Porsche uses a strap on the glass window top except the strap goes around the side. Top in the service position. Looks like enough room to work in the engine compartment. You can see the black strap at the very top of the picture. Another picture of the strap holding the top up. The strap.
  15. I think P.Viby did this on a 996. Might want to ask him. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3389
  16. :lightbulb: The S has the silver trim around the window.
  17. There have been 3 versions due to the "ears" on each side. Porsche also added more sealing material in the lever lock area on the newer tops. The first version had the ears and backing plates under the ears. Then just the ears. Then the ears were eliminated around model year 1998. My January 1997 has the ears and the plates. The ears were used for the first version of the roof rack. The plastic cover/ear was removed and the rack bolted to the plate under the ear. The design of the roof rack changed in January 1998 so that it was no longer bolted to the hardtop. Thus the ears were eliminated. On the parts list Porsche use to show the 1997 top as having a different part number than 1998 and newer. This caused people to claim that you could not put a 1997 top on a newer car. To prove the ears are the only difference I put my top on several newer cars. The 1997 top has now been eliminate on the parts list and Porsche shows one top for all years. This is an ear.
  18. I should not have looked at this thread. I had to jack up the RR to replace the oxygen sensor. I have not been paying attention to my tires. Fronts are fine but that is the usual situation. I got 20k miles from the Sumitomo HTR Z II. Did not look like that when they were new. Not much interested in the N rating. I wanted to try Kuhmo 712 this time around. 4 years ago I paid $484 for the Sumitomo from Tire Rack. It is now $344. Kuhmo cost more. 4 years ago I was told Sumitomo was good bang for the buck, not good in the wet. This has proven to be true in my experience. So, it looks like I will be contacting Tire Rack for a repeat.
  19. We can't call Kathryn a spare date anymore.
  20. There is a 4 spoke on ebay for $150. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...&category=33704 Kind of high. That company is also on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...&category=33704
  21. Porsche wants you to use the coolant they sell, which is made by Arteco. Some coolants should not be mixed. If what you put in is one that should not be mixed I would not worry about it since it takes very little liquid to turn the light off. Every few years I add a cup or two of water to the tank when the light comes on. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...2&st=0&p=18113&
  22. Naked cluster.
  23. I thought the tool would fit. I talked to 2 of the mechanics at my dealership and they said they never worked on a car when the tool did not fit and the car was a leaker, and a repeat leaker. If I remember correctly, it fit Berny's car and it leaks after the 6th replacement.
  24. If you used one from a 996 your car would go in reverse when you selected drive. Per the parts list the 1997-1999 2.5 is the same. 2.7 is different. 3.2 is different. I have in the back of my mind that the gearing for the 3 different engines is different with the tip, because that is the way it is with the manual transmissions.
