  1. Saw that picture on one of the message boards is all I can remember. This one I took of a local Boxster owner who has since moved out of the area.
  2. Your part number is correct for a set of 4 caps. They are listed for a 997 and 987. They are also listed for a Cayenne with sport techno wheels. They should fit a 986/996. This is that cap on a Cayenne with sport techno wheels.
  3. I have seen pictures of radios in that slot.
  4. Update. BAS said they are going to have their glass supplier make the defogger elements in a darker color. I was at the local Carlsen Porsche event today. The 986/997 glass windows are identical. I measured them. The oem horizontal heating elements are orange - I thought the were a dark color. The vertical elements are black. I thought all the oem glass heating elements were all black - wrong. The 987/997 glass is 34 1/2" wide and 11" high. Will someone with the GAHH version post the dimensions of the window, and a picture of the top in the service position. My 1997 plastic window is 38" x 16". If a local guy wants to do this then let me know. The mechanic guy I know who does an oem top in about 3 1/2 hours said he will show us how to do it at our local work on cars days, but I needed to clear it with 2 other people. 1 of the 2 I spoke to said it is ok. I did not have time to speak to the 2nd guy as I had to leave for work and he was on the phone. Someone correct me if I have a bad memory, but on the GAHH site wasn't the price for 1997-2002 about $950. Today I see $699. If I did not dream it then maybe because Cabrio World is selling their top on ebay for $695. Tried to take pics of the horizontal orange elements on the oem window. Edited: The top pic is a 987 and the bottom is a 2003 986.
  5. First, how to remove a cluster is all over the net. You remove a torx screw behind the dummy cell phone grill and behind the hazard button, then pull the cluster off the dash. Second, a 2001 - 2004 986 cluster will not work on a 1997-2000 986. The cluster changed in 2001 and this new style cluster will not work on the prior year cars - you cannot even plug it in because the connectors are very different.
  6. I assume it is in the same place as a 987 Boxster, so you would have to remove the center console. The pic is a 987 console that I watched a mechanic remove.
  7. The 987 cap with the large crest is from the Cayenne, believe it or not. It fits some Cayenne wheels. The cap has a 955 part number. I have been told it will fit a 986. I measured this cap on a Caynenne, 997, and 987. I then measure the cap used on a 986. There were all 3 inches.
  8. I have seen this 30 minute rule of thumb a few times. I have never followed it. I do not know if it applies to a 996/986. Never seen it in the 986 shop manual. I have done many steering wheel/air bag removals over the years. For the 4 to 3 spoke swap, or for the OBC retrofit. My late friend Dave with a 1998 Boxster went on a group drive. Then the group stopped for lunch. Dave was turning in his leased car in a few days. So while we were all parked outside the restaurant I removed his 3 spoke and put his original 4 spoke back on. Took 10 minutes. Then we were in the restaurant with the rest of the group ordering lunch, with Dave's 3 spoke at the table. I then put Dave's 3 spoke in Doc Wong's 1997 Boxster which had a 4 spoke. The second after the negative battery cable is removed I pull the wheel. Never had an air bag light.
  9. If the battery is hooked up and the key is in the on position and if you disconnect an air bag, then you will get the light. Since you said the key was out of the ignition I have no clue why the light went on. Hope you remembered to hook up the new air bag. It takes 2 minutes for your OPC to turn off the light. Just play dumb when you bring it in
  10. No experience. I would like to put one in at our local work on cars days. To reduce the shift throw is simple and there are different ways to go about it. Simply cut an inch off the top of the shift lever like Porsche did with the 2004 Boxster special editon. Make the bottom of the lever longer like EVO does with an extension that attaches to the bottom of the lever. Change the pivot point of the lever. This is what B&M/Porsche does. From the picture of the Schnell unit the pivot point has been raised. Nothing new, just a new name. If you look at the pictures on rennlist I think the Schnell unit is the same as the one from Imec in Japan, just a different color.
  11. For insurance reasons UK cars have an alarm siren and tilt sensor. We do not have this in the US. We just have an alarm horn, which is the round silver thing next to the battery. Your car has the alarm horn and siren. The siren has a built in rechargeable battery for power. If you try to disconnect the battery the alarm siren will go off. You need to turn the key on first before disconnecting the battery. Then the alarm siren will not go off.
  12. Very good. Years ago I was told the 944 wrench was also used on the 996/986. Go to your local parts place, find a 944 spin-on filter, then find the cup wrench that fits on the end of a 944 oil filter. Buy the wrench. The wrench will then work on all current model Porsches with the plastic cannister that is shaped on the end like a 944 metal spin-on filter.
  13. How about a picture. What exactly did you order. Did you order the factory short shift for a 997, or an aftermarked. The first picture is the factory short shift for 997/987, part number 997 424 983 00. The blue tool in the picture is used to center the shift lever. The tool number is not 9619. The second picture is the standard 996/986 shift and the tool for that shift. It is orange and the tool number is 9169. The part number for the orange tool is 000 721 961 90. I have been trying to find the blue tool. It is not in the tool catalog. At out recent tech session I went through the tool catalog with the mechanic and we could not find the blue tool, just the orange tool that is way different than the blue tool. He then told me he seemed to remember that if you ordered the 997/987 short shift the blue tool came in the box with the shifter. If this is true then is is strange you have to buy the shift to get the blue tool. If you have the blue tool shown in the first picture then can you give me any part numbers on it.

  16. None of that stuff exist on a 987 because the spare tire is gone as standard equipment. Except for the wheel locks. Guess I need to look at a 987 owner's manual.

  18. Most likely the shift knob is not seated. It takes force to pull it off and force to seat it. I cover the top with a cloth and hit it with a dead blow plastic hammer until I can tell it is seated. Why the hammer, because we use it to hit the wood chisel when we remove the oem plastic bushing for a B&M install so it is handy. Otherwise I pound on the top of the knob with my hand until it is seated.

  22. Now, now boys. I have the non smoker socket and plug that I have never put in my car. The plug fits the original socket that came with the car. I have a 1997 Boxster. I pulled the lighter out and suck the plug in for this picture. Someone said the plug would not fit the socket on the newer cars. This made no sense to me unless the size of the socket changed over the years. I then tried my plug on a newer 996 and it fit. Now for the trivia. On the early Boxsters the non smoker kit (plug and storage tray) was a no cost option. Then Porsche did away with the option.

  24. I am starting to forget old stuff so do not trust my memory, as this swap started years ago when the 220 came out. I think the alarm contact for the 210 was on the mounting housing which you need to remove to install the 220. Or something like that. Back then most people removed the 210 housing and just put tape on the end of the wire to the alarm contact so that if the end of the wire happen to touch ground you would not get the single beep when you set the alarm. There was info on the old Becker board. Also look at the Traffic Pro TSB as it mentions the alarm contact. Who would ever steal a Becker radio? Back then people who did the 210 swap would just put tape on the end of the wire and forget to incorporate the alarm system into the 220 radio. Get your 220 radio first and then I will see if I saved the old info on this swap. This is the 210 bracket.
  25. The 997/987 has a thin metal rod cliped onto the back of the fuse box cover. What is it for?
