  1. When the 986 production moved to Finland for model year 1998 I never understood why a few boxsters a week were still being made in Germany. So they would not forget how to make the car. Sure looks like some 987s are still being made in Germany. Of the 10 on the lot today 2 were made in Germany.
  2. I watched a mechanic I know replace the window regulator, and of course he had to first remove the door panel, glass, and then the regulator. The side air bag was not touched or disconnected, and the battery was not disconnected - but I did not know that untill he turned on the key to run the window up and down for a test before he put the panel back on. I expected an air bag light when he turned the ignition on to test the window function. No light. As REDLINE said, the air bag must have been disconnected during the glass replacement and the key turned on. Tell your friend to take it in to have the light turned off.
  3. Your dealer should have a list of publications. My GT3 booklet for 2003/05 is PNA 489 021 04. I assume the part number for 2005 ends in 05. The 2005 booklet will only tell you what, if any, changes were made for 2005. It is like a supplement. So you should also get the 2003/04 booklet.
  4. Looks like 986 637 243 04 is for 1998 - 2000.

  6. The SmartTop top control/relay did not cause a top drive cable to fail. This, like other devices, is simply a timer that replaces your finger holding down a switch for 12 seconds. It also defeats the speed signal requirement but other aftermarket units do that as well. Like mark said the mechanic cannot time the top transmissions unless a drill is used to turn the cables with this unit installed.
  7. Well then put one in the oven and see if you can separate the clear plastic top from the black plastic base. I pried one apart without heat but I broke everything. There is a rubber weatherstrip and some type of adhesive that holds them together.
  8. I know a little about 1997 - 1999 tops but the drive changed in 2000 and in a prior post you said you have a 2000. We have not worked on a 2000 up because they don't have the problems the older models do. Therefore this may be a Peter question. As you figured out you cannot find the compartment lid (motor) micro switch because that is only for 1997 -1999. Some of the early 2000s had bad top relay/control units. But when they went bad the top would simply not operate. Just for grins take it out and see if it has a black dot on the bottom on the base where the pins are. Give it a tap and put it back in. If the light will still not go out them see if you can swap a relay from another 2000 -2004. On a 1997-1999 when you open the top you must hold your finger on the button for a second or two, even when the clamshell is fully down, or the light will not go out. This allows the top motor to operate an extra second or so, and then something inside the top relay/control unit shuts off the light after the time limit is met. With that said, are you holding the button down long enough for the light to go out? You are not supposed to take your finger off the switch until the light goes out. What do you mean there is a problem getting the top to move from fully open/close?
  9. The 2000 tech intro booklet has 7,200 rpm for both the 2.7 and 3.2.
  10. A US alarm system and remote is 315MHZ. In Europe a different frequency is used as you found out. Even if you have the correct remote the dealer needs to program the remote to your car.
  11. I can take it apart for you - but you will not like the way it looks when I'm done.
  12. 1997-2002 had 3 plastic rivets that once removed you could lift off the plastic top of the spoiler. No rivets on a 2003/04. Someone on one of the UK boards took it off on a 2003/04 but I forget the details. I think maybe they stuck a screw driver in the 3 holes to release the top of the spoiler.
  13. That is almost funny. I guess a Cayenne Turbo logo is better than a Boxster logo. Have you checked the rear of your car. :D
  14. It is not prewired. Porsche is a funny company. They do not use a universal wiring harness for all cars. The harness is made specifically for the options that the car is to be built with. For example. If you do not get the Hi-Fi option then you have no amp in the front trunk and no door speakers, and there are no wires to add these items. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2880
  15. The UK magazine 911 & Porsche World also had an article a few months ago. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...=4980&hl=clutch
  16. 3 Boxstirs in the parking spaces in front of my office buiding. All silver. If someone in the complex complains that we are working on cars then the story is we all have dead batteries and need to jump start 3 cars at the same time. Boxsterguy's cd changer went into my car, and my changer in his car. His changer did not work in my car. My changer worked in his car. Swap cd cartridges. Same result. Looks like his replacement changer is bad. Ray got his Pentosin shot.
  17. Contributing members can see the TSB, or you can get it from Alldata, or maybe your local dealer will give you a copy. My 1997 had one of the early fixes during the then 2 year factory warranty. Then the latest fix was done to my car in 2002 when the car was long out of warranty. New buckles and ground wires - the gold instead of tin plated kind. It was goodwilled so I did not pay anything. No light in 3 years. I was told that as of July 2003 Porsche's policy changed for out of warranty cars, and it was now on a case by case basis, and if you had a history of prior fixes if you would got a free fix. 2 of our local owners within the past year paid for the labor and Porsche paid for the parts. Of course, the labor is more expensive than the parts. Your typical Honda/GM owner would freak out if they saw an air bag light come on. There would be a recall. In my 6 years of Boxstir ownership I have never understood how Porsche seems to be immune from such things, known problems. Also, like the crappy Audi/VW ignition switch used for many years that fails - I had two of those replaced by the way. If you turned on the ignition, started the car, the headlights and other things did not come on. Or, if you turned off the ignition the engine continued to run. Or, if you could not remove the ignition key. That crappy switch was used up to 2002 on the Box and 996. The only recall was for about 3,000 1997 Boxes. If that was going on with a Toyota.... Rant over. Do not get mad a your local dealer. Your dealer would love to get paid by PCNA in Atlanta for doing the work. I watched the retro being done by Peter in 2001, just like was done to my car the following year. I did not pay attention. Just took pictures. When we remove seats at our local work on cars days I can tell which cars had the fix done because there are additional ground wires and non factory electrical tape on the wiring harness to the seats.
  18. No problem finding 0W-40 here. Sometimes the shelf is empty but then it shows up. I saw it at my dealer last week and noticed the shape of the container changed. The mechanic I talked to did not like the new shape. I waiting to see if Mobil makes the 0W-40 in their extended performance version.
  19. Then you drill one hole in each hoop, and two holes in the back of the middle rollbar padding. You will need a pop rivet gun for the rivets included in the mounting kit. Have you actually removed the padding from one of the hoops?
  20. I have looked at all your 21 messages. You need to ask questions in a language that I can understand. Good luck with your water drip pant, with a 980 pant number. I could guess that it is the black foam covering under the top. But I am not going to guess.
  21. If you have to add fluid all the time then I guess you have a leak. If so then how to you know where from. The seals in my power steering leak, but there are rubber boots on the end of the rack secured by two clamps. The boots fill up with fluid so I did not know because the fluid does not drip on the ground. I figured out why I was adding fluid all the time when I removed one of the clamps and fluid came out of the boot. Porsche is on the 7th generation rack because of leaky seals. If you cannot see the source of the leak or fluid on the ground then you may have the same problem.
  22. Porsche does not have instructions. If you are local I will put it in. If not then you should pull the padding off one of the hoops and see if the roll bar already has a hole for the rivet.
  23. That wire is to get you 12 volts to the control unit. If you do not hook it up the lights will work fine, but I do not think the low beam will rotate up when you switch to high beam.
