  2. Remove the plugs, inspect the gap, ensure the plugs and gap are correct for this car. Remove and inspect the coil packs for cracks. Reinstall everything paying close attention to torque specifications and ensure the wires all click back into the packs. Try to fire it up again.
  3. It could also be due to overfilling of oil, which is of course very simple to check and correct.
  4. A leak down test should reveal where the problem is. If the air is leaking through the valves, valve guides or seals then the air will be heard through the intake or exhaust manifolds. If the air is leaking through the oil filler tube then the piston rings are worn and have likely lost ring seal. If it is just valves and valve guides, you might just need a top end rebuild (valve job). The purple/blue smoke would be from the oil leaking past the seals and/or through the guides. A valve job does not always warrant a new engine. OR If the air on the leak down test is through the oil filler tube (crankcase), then the smoke and oil contamination on the plugs could be due loss of piston ring seal, which would require a bottom end job as well... In which case you are pretty much better off sourcing another engine due to the cost of total engine teardown and rebuild. Another way to test is by use of a vacuum gauge on the intake, if at hot idle the gauge reads below 17inches HG and/or on quick blips of throttle goes 0 and then only back to 20 or 21 that is an indication of worn rings. The vacuum gauge can also diagnose valve problems.
  5. Yes this car has a mile of water hoses. I would surmise 15-20 hours sounds reasonable. Some of the lines are hard lines and cannot be replaced without removing the engine. The hoses tucked up in the front require removing a lot of paneling and are also very difficult to get to.
  6. Could be the crank position sensor. Smoke could be indicative of an AOS failure. Do you have a code reader and is the check engine light illuminated?

  10. Possibly something got caught in the A/C pulley or perhaps something in the a/c pulley. Does the A/C work? Can you spin the A/C pulley freely by hand with the serpentine belt removed?
  11. Back side of the airbox melted? Serpentine belt?
  12. There are some compatible coolants, and depending on how much they added it might not be a problem. Here is a good read on compatible coolants: http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_5/Coolant_Antifreeze.html The best thing to do for small quantities is just add distilled water. If you are uncertain what they added and they don't have a brand name for you I would have the system drained and filled, you don't want it to gell on you. That would create a much larger bill to clean up.
  13. Wow, well I will certainly be subscribed to this thread should you choose to embark on this endeavor. Good point on the turbo having better resale. If you have money to throw at it and it is a project car, I'm sure you would raise a lot of eyebrows in a 987 with such a powerplant... but a well made turbo might raise just as many. As for the DME, here's what Durametric has to say about compatibility. 996 ME7.8 for 2002-2004 (Engine) ME7.8 for 2001-2005 Turbo, GT2 (Engine) 986 ME7.8 for 2003-2004 (Engine) 987 ME7.8.1 for 2005-2008 (Engine) 997 ME7.8.1 for 2005-2008 non-turbo (Engine) ME7.8.1 for 2005-2009 Turbo and GT2 (Engine) I'm not sure if you could flash 7.8.1 backwards to 7.8 - and if you could I'm guessing there would be some re-wiring to do.

  20. Did you try swapping the coil packs and plugs between banks (move 1-3 to 4-6 and 4-6 to 1-3) to see if the misfires follow? You could try unplugging MAF, but that shouldn't affect idle running. Did you repeat going over everything you unplugged or disconnected and made sure it is sealing well (meaning no intake leaks/etc.)?
  21. Hey Ross, This really sucks for you, I'm really sorry to hear this. Blue book says $10,000 for the car in excellent condition with running engine and that many miles. Even for the DIY'er to fix the cracked head (assuming that is the problem), they are looking at $3000 to repair. I hope you find a buyer!
  22. Could you post the fault codes please? You could try to swap the cam position sensors between banks to see if the problem follows. I've not read of an camshaft chain adjuster/variocam actuator causing severe misfires before, but it can certainly affect valve timing, so perhaps it might be possible?
  23. Honestly, I would consider putting that engine in a Turbo. I wouldn't even consider putting it into my 996 NA, but that would be my first choice if a Turbo chassis is not available. There is so much more to a turbo than just the engine. Significantly upgraded (especially over Boxster, but also 996 NA) cooling system rads, fans, etc, bigger brakes, better suspension, fatter wheels, etc. etc. etc. not to mention you're going to have to be a fabricating genius to fit it in and make exhaust headers/etc.. Putting it in a Boxster is completely insane. If you were dead set on a Boxster as the chassis, you might have better luck putting a supercharged 3.4L or 3.6L into the Boxster, since those are "knowns". This would be the first I've heard of someone putting a 996TT engine in anything but a 996TT. Just some opinions of course... if you want to pave the trail by all means!!!!
