  1. rizzo, you can do it without the tool, if you tighten the bearing support bolts last, and make sure the support is completely free of stress and mounted straight.
  2. The cable makes a mechanical connection between the gear box selector and the inside gear shift lever (P-RND etc.) The topic you indicate discusses a hydraulic/electronic problem which is not related to the shift cable.
  3. The "hose" in your pic. is the shift cable (Tiptronic). Take a look if the material under the foam protection is still in good shape, if yes, you can use the cable even for a long time.

  5. Agree with nick49, do not start the engine, with the spark plugs installed, to prevent possible further damage (liner rupture).
  6. Remove the bolts from the front transfer case. Remove the bolts from the middle bearing support. Remove the 3 bolts from the rear differential (rubber circular connecting part remains on the shaft). Lower the exhaust. Pry the rear end of shaft loose from the rear differential with a pry bar and pull out. Install in reverse order.
  7. Remove the front trim in the trunk and adjust the lock by loosen the two bolts one winding and than refasten. Take care to do this mm. by mm., if you adjust too deep or out of the middle, the hood (catcher) can stuck in the lock !!!!
  8. Paul, 997/987 doors have a different construction than 996/986, they have the same construction like Cayenne have. In fact the doors are made in three parts: outer part (steel) with mirror, handle, hinges, etc. the middle part: black plate (steel) functioning as carrier for window, wiring, cables, lock, window regulator, speaker, etc. also as rigid reinforcement for the outer part of the door, inner part: door trim with inner handle and interior safety light. There are no holes in the black steel plate to penetrate, you have to remove the plate with the window down. 997/987 are totally different cars than 996/986, nothing is the same, it's even better to forget 996 when you work on 997. Success.
  9. Lower the trunk lock a little if the bumper is adjusted as it should, it could help, the hood should be closed by the pressure of one hand, on a spot between the crest and the bumper (definitely NOT on the crest!!)
  10. Only a detailed inspection may explain the existing problem, all the rest is guessing. Fingers crossed and hoping for the best.
  11. I have expressed my bad, i know you cant mount front pads on the rear. My point was the density difference in effective brake lining between 330 and 355 and where the difference is located on the pad. I have no experience with third party parts, i would take contact with the pad manufacturer to clear this out or better go for OEM parts.

  13. I fear for a failure on the right cyl. bank (left exhaust), AOS failure creates smoke from both cyl. banks and thus both exhausts. Hope i'm wrong.
  14. There is (was) no recommendation to use paste between the plate and the pad, as far as i can remember.
  15. Flywheel manufacturer LUK should have a special tool to check out, the amount of unnecessary dual flywheel replacements in the US looks three times as much than in Europe.
  16. No, if you do that, squealing will be the result, the metal plate is also performed as a heat shield. The separate dampers come loose from the pads by heat if they are directly connected.
  17. The micro switch replacement requires a complete removal of the inner door trim, remove the bolts of the black metal inner door plate,(which is the inner door components carrier) with the window down. Pull the plate (carrier) backwards, as far as possible, and use the available room to replace the sensor. I'm sure you wish it was a 996.
  18. The effective brake lining stuff is wider for use on the larger front rotors, so they will overlay the smaller rear rotors on the inside and outside as well. I would change them ASAP.
  19. Normal behavior for a stock Cayenne, please do a search, this issue is already discussed before.

  21. Probably a temp. sensor fault (outside or inside sensor, or implausible signal between those sensors and the control box). A diagnostic tool can help you out.
  22. I would use a 5W-50 for Australia, certainly not 5W-30 due too "thin".
  23. Looks like bkc888 have a Tiptronic gearbox since the warranty cy. offers 9.2 hours, any warranty cy. will pay this time rate for a car with a manual gearbox, cause it takes only max. half the time to do the job, they have also the official factory time schedules. Perhaps the repair shop is not experienced enough to achieve the time schedule as it should (time schedules are draw up on new cars, not on used and possible rusty and damaged cars), the difference is then charged to the customer, that's the way how it works over here.
  24. Atwal87, since when is the DME located under the passenger seat on a 996 coupe? :unsure:
  25. Perhaps someone replaced the sump cover in the past, and used too much green silicon sealant, instead of the OEM colorless type.
