  1. Dang! I hoped to see a fix for your problem. I have the same symptom with my '03 986. I put the top up one day when it looked like rain, but it stopped about halfway up with a crunch-type sound. I was able to raise the top per the description in the Owner's Manual, howeverl. On disassembly of the driver-side transmission I found that the nylon drive gear had a ruined tooth. I purchased new drive gears of 100% metal and installed them. On re-installation I set both transmissions so that the marks on the hubs align with the marks on the covers. As of now, the motor runs in the down direction but does has no power for the up direction. I checked out the up-down switch and it does reverse polarity (pretty sure about that, anyway). Fuses are intact. I purchased a used relay that the seller professed to be working properly, and it made no difference. I did check the microswitch on the driver side's transmission, and observed it to toggle when I was bench testing it using a drill to spin the cable. Are there any other switches in this contraption other than the one in the transmission and in the latching mechanism at the windshield? I hesitate to take the car the 100 miles to the closest dealer for fear they will ignore my relating of the scenario above and start all over with the diagnosis while I kill time waiting. What is the status of your car now? Diid you solve the mystery? .
  2. I cannot speak to the cause of your problem, but I have an ongoing problem with my '03's top refusal to go up due to the motor not getting power when the top-up button is pressed. But the onset of this problem caused me to refer to the Owner's Manual which says how to disconnect the top's transmissions from the top and its framework, enabling one to raise it manually. This is not easy to do in a raging thunderstorm, so I t's best to cast an eye skyward prior to depressing the top-down button.
