  3. under the center console is a plug for the telephone wiring that has a switched and unswitched connector. This is what I use. Pop off the batwing and the lower storage cubby to get at it.

  5. 993.375.049.06 Motor mount -- US MSRP $155.30 each (2 required). Here's what I was quoted by Phil Coy at Sunset: 993-375-049-06 mounts $129.55 ea. X 2 999-084-215-09 locking nuts $1.15 ea. X2 Loren and Phil both work at light speeds. :) Thank you! This is correct. 993.375.049.07 are GT2 and turbo mounts.
  6. The skinny tube is a vacuum hose. Check to see if there is a vacuum storage canister bolted to the right rear side of the engine. If the vacuum hose is connected to that, it is from a PSE installation. The larger pipe may be a breather vent.
  7. If there is not any dark purple or green fluid dribbled down from where they are mounted, then they have not ruptured yet. That said, over time, certainly by 100K miles they will finally fail. New motor mounts can help isolate engine vibration, especially vibration at idle, but if the only thing that is different is the launch shudder, then replacing the mounts will not cure that. You got that for free when you reduced the rotational mass of the engine with the lightened flywheel.
  8. You don't have a problem. A lighten flywheel also reduces the amount of dampening that the flywheel will provide at launch. The shutter is a free benefit of a flywheel with less mass.
  9. Good idea, but I also think that front to back would be more useful.
  10. Most good Porsche techs can do an R&R on a clutch assembly in about 2-3 hours. I can almost match that if I have a lift and a tranny jack. Regardless, don't pay for more than 4 hours labor.
  11. If you did not use the recommended plugs, then change them out at 30K intervals.
  12. I think what you are saying is that the anti-squeal dampener is stuck in the caliper piston. Is that right? If that is the case, don't worry about it, just leave it in there, collapse the piston in the caliper and install the new pad. Unless you have boogered up the dampener, then there is really no difference between a new one and an old one. When I do a 996 brake job, if the old anti-squeal dampeners are still good, I just reuse them. This is no big deal.

  15. What color is your windshield washer fluid? Sometimes that stuff is green. G12 coolant is always orange or red.
  16. For cleaning purposes they are exactly the same. What you are trying to do is to remove the gunk buildup at the edge of the backside of the butterfly, and around the bore of the throttle body. The butterfly is not quite closed at idle, and that little gap is where the gunk builds up and causes the idle roughness. This process is the one I use for all my fuel injected cars, and it works just fine regardless if the butterfly is operated electrically or by a cable to the gas pedal. If this cleaning process does not cure your idle roughness, then taking the throttle body off the car to clean it (there really isn't anything else to clean except the butterfly and throttle bore) won't gain you anything. I would recommend that your next step is to look for loose or frayed vacuum lines, and then replace the plugs.
  17. The RMS issue seems to be like the valve guide problems in 993s and early 911s, over time, the problems are repaired on a car by car basis. When picking a used 996, just make sure that the RMS has been retrofitted to the current version.
  18. I would second Loren's post that you use a "Battery Maintainer" to keep the battery in your 997 properly charged. As he stated, a common problem with batteries in the 997 is that if the car is not used, the battery will go dead because of the electronics in the car keep a constant drain on the battery. Get a battery charger maintainer with your new battery. One question: Where do you drive a 997 in Pakistan?

  20. The liquid filled motor mounts on Porsches, Audis, and VWs, are notorious at failing. The usual indication of a failed mount is that you will see a greenish or purple fluid stain on the mount. The majority of these types of liquid filled motor mounts will fail by the time the car has been driven 100K miles. Even less if the car is driven consistently in an aggressive manner or in adverse conditions. Now contrary to the "experts", temporarily lifting the car by the engine to place jack stands on the rear lifting points is not the root cause of the rupture of the mounts on a 996/997. The root cause is simple fatigue of the elastomeric material used to manufacture the mount. If a mount actually fails during the lifting of the car, that is the preferable way to have the mount fail, as it was going to fail regardless. It is better that the mount fail when it can be noticed, than it fail silently and it be many miles until it is discovered. Indications of a failed mount are: - purple or greenish fluid stains on the mount or rear engine cross-support. - Increased vibration or engine harshness - The engine sitting lower on one or both sides. Good news is that replacing the mount is a simple half hour DIY job, with each mount costing less than $125 each. The mount is replaced from the engine compartment, with 2 bolts holding it in place on top, and one on the bottom. Simply hold the engine up with a floor jack, remove the lower bolt, then the 2 top bolts, lift the damaged mount out from the engine compartment, drop the new mount in, and replace the bolts. The mounts should always be replaced in pairs as if one has ruptured, the other is not far behind. I recommend that any 996/997 with more than 40K miles on it be inspected for mount failure during routine maintenance.
  21. You can also use this one that is readily available at most auto parts store for about $9.
  22. Make sure that you correctly tighten the cap. It should seat on the tank with the cruciform pattern dead on straight. Like this:
