  2. The most common place for a short is in the steering wheel. The insulation wears and then it shorts.
  3. Tank Venting System Fuel vapor is collected in the carbon canister. This canister is mounted in the front, right-hand wheel arch. The fuel vapor collected in the carbon canister is fed back into the combustion cycle. The carbon canister is purged with fresh air thus regenerating the carbon. Functioning An electromagnetic valve is installed in the line between the intake housing and carbon canister. The flow direction of the one-way valve is imprinted on the plastic housmg. the valve is secured above ttie alternator attached to tne intake housing. The tank venting valve is clocked under map control with warm engine and active oxygen regulation. The resulting pulse duty factor is dependent on the airflow rate of the engine and the load density of the carbon canister. When the mixture drifts from lambda = 1 towards a rich or lean setting (caused by the purging of the carbon canister), this is detected by the control unit via the oxygen sensing system and is corrected by readjusting the mixture control during the tank venting phase. The first purging phase is performed after the engine is started and when the appropriate operating conditions are reached (engine temperature and oxygen regulation operations). It is ended by the DME control unit 250 seconds after the engine has been started. The mixture adaptation phase is then performed for 100 seconds. The next tank venting phase occurs, and so on. Operation of tank venting valve The tank venting valve is constructed in such a way that it is closed when the ignition is off. If the ignition is switched on, the DME control unit applies a positive potential to the tank venting valve via terminal 54. When the engine is started and the operating conditions described previously are reached, the tank venting valve is once again connected to ground by the DME control unit, but via terminal 61, and opens. When the engine is switched off but the ignition switch on, the Porsche System Tester 2 can be used to check that the valve is functioning correctly.

  5. With US/Canada DME programs the DME looks at before and after cat O2 sensor readings and adjusts the mixture depending on what it sees. Without the cats that DME program will never be able to adjust the mixture correctly - because there is no change in readings (no cats). There is a German DME program that only uses the O2 sensors before the cats that some have tried. But I caution you that in some states you can be fined for defeating emissions systems on a street car. You would need a PST2 or PIWIS tester and your car's IPAS codes to change the DME program.
  6. I don't know of Australia cars have charcoal canisters and venting tests like the US and Canada. Basically that vents gas fumes through the charcoal canister where it converts the vapor back into the engine to be burned or if the car is not running it returns them to the tank. It's for emissions and the environmental protection.
  7. If you are going to run without cats then you need to find someone to program the DME for no cats - otherwise you will always get faults.

  11. Hmm... I don't think it's the cable - the 996 has a hydraulic clutch. More likely they did replace the throw out bearing arm when they did the clutch job. There is a TSB on this.
  12. Bumper removal is slightly different than the 996 series and is covered here in other posts. Once you get the bumper off cleaning the radiators and AC condensers is exactly the same. There is even a video in the Videos section.

  16. :welcome: I don't think the switch was a factory option until MY2003. If you have option XLF on your options sticker then the sport exhaust was a factory install rather than a dealer install.

  20. If your car did not come with the Parkassist option then you do not have the wiring. In that case you would have to run the wiring yourself.

  22. Yes, but PIWIS still needs to be connected to the newer car to get the fault finding and troubleshooting tools. Oh, and all the later model wiring diagrams are on PIWIS too.
  23. Is the part not in post 2 above? If not, then it is part of the front bumper assembly not the under carriage.
  24. 1. - Connect special tool 9637 to wiring harness (DME control module plug). - Measure voltage between special tool 9637 pin III/23 and ground. - Switch on the ignition. Voltage should be 9 volts. - Check voltage signal from MAF sensor with ’Ignition on’ (with Porsche System Tester 2 in the’Actual values/mass air flow’ menu, or with a voltmeter and special tool 9637). Voltage should be 0.9 to 1.1 volts. - Start the engine. Voltage should be 1.2 to 1.5 volts at idle. 2. - Read out throttle actual value at idling speed (engine at operating temperature, air conditioning switched off). Should be less than 4 %.
  25. The manuals/troubleshooting is only available for the newer cars - some came with the 9x7-1 series and much more in the 9x7-2 series. So the older cars (9x6 series) do not have any additional information in PIWIS. Technically when you access a px6 series car in PIWIS it loads the older PST2 program for diagnosis.
