When a fixed factory (Porsche) spoiler is added there is a change to the wiring harness to disable that warning. You need to purchase and install (5 min max) the following new harness: 996 612 070 51 Wiring Harness.

Technical Details:

Check whether there is a jumper connecting pin 2 (which is already jumped from pin 1) to pin 5 on plug X23 of the new wiring harness (connection to the vehicle). If this is the case, the spoiler extended signal will be constantly present at the control module and the warning light of the retractable rear spoiler will not light. (at speeds above 74mph).

Connect the plug connection of the new wiring harness to the vehicle. Route the wiring harness along the hood shock to the fan housing and attach it on the rear lid with two (2) fastening clips. Connect the fan and interior lamp plugs. Done.

Loren I had a question.. I too am installing a fixed spoiler on MY01 C4 and I called local parts dept and asked for the special harness which you described to stop dash light from being on. I got it and noticed the number is slightly different than one you list..it is 996-612-070-04

Do I have the wrong one for this year and model? I aksed parts and they seemed to be stumped.

Hmm.... both the original Aerokit Cup and Aerokit Cup II parts lists show the 996 612 070 51 Wiring Harness. The 996 612 070 04 Wiring Harness does show up as a valid part in another kit. The -04 kit looks like the one for no stop lamp and the -51 looks like it does support the stop lamp -- but I do not really any other know the differences. If you are getting the smaller "Carrera" style spoiler like Don's then that is the one for that kit (but it should have come with the kit).

Also, interesting that the -51 part shows a price of $40.70 (retail) and the -04 shows $94.70 (retail).

I am getting a smaller single wing so the "one would be the 070-04?

Actually Aero wing from MA Shaw did come with a harness but unsure if it will turn off the dash light. Will find out when I install this in a few weeks. Wary of using anything but Porsche made products for electrical!

From TSB 2a/98 6315 Aerokit - Deactivating the Rear Spoiler Warning Light on MY’01 (dated 8-31-01)

"Vehicle Type: Boxster / Boxster S

Model Year: MY 2001 (1)

Concern: Deactivating the rear spoiler warning light.

Information: As of MY ’01, a new instrument cluster has been installed in Boxster and Boxster S vehicles. The display of the warning and indicator lights is now performed by light-emitting diodes (previously bulbs). The LEDs are soldered into the circuit board of the cluster, and are not removable. When installing an Aerokit in one of these vehicles, the spoiler warning light must be deactivated in a different manor than previously described in step 4.0 of bulletin 2/98.

Note: It is no longer necessary to remove the instrument cluster, skip steps 4.0 to 4.3 in bulletin

2/98.

Tools: Porsche press-out tool for electrical plug connections, number 87050

Work Procedure: 1.0 This procedure is be performed with step 3.1.2 (in bulletin 2/98), after the spoiler adjusting elements have been retracted.

1.1 Remove the rear luggage compartment lining and remove the relay carrier.

1.2 Remove brown relay 3 (extend spoiler relay) and brown relay 9 (retract spoiler relay) from relay carrier 2. Discard the relays. They are no longer required.

1.3 Disengage the 6-pin plug (only 5 are utilized) connection for the drive motor of the rear spoiler. It is located under the support of the rear spoiler assembly.

1.4 Using the connection diagram below, remove pin 1 and insulate. Remove pins 2 and 4 and swap locations with each other.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pin Color Cross Function Instruction

Section

1 Blue/Green 1.00 Spoiler drive power Remove and insulate. Secure back on harness

2 Gray/Brown 0.35 Spoiler top position Remove and install in position 4

4 Gray/Green 0.35 Spoiler bottom position Remove and install in position 2

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.5 Reconnect the 6-pin plug, and install it back on the spoiler support.

Note: Do not leave the plug disconnected as noted in bold type in step 3.1.2."

Loren, do you have one of these TSB's for an 03 C2? I have a Taco wing in the paint shop and I should have it tomorrow for the install. I don't mind doing some wiring instead of having to buy something from the dealer (usually means a week wait anyway).

All Contributing Members have access to ALL the TSBs ;) ;)

Loren, I read about the harness required for installing a fixed tail but do you know anything about the instrument cluster spoiler coding. What is this option for and does it effect the warning lamp?

Does one still need the harness or will setting this option be sufficient? Confused.

On a fixed spoiler/non PSM car that setting does nothing. I think that triggers the brake light on the spoiler when PSM/ABS is braking (rather than you).

I'm afraid you need the cable harness or re-wire the connector.

Thanks for that explanation Loren.

However, why would "only" the spoiler light bit lit and not the other break lights. Seems a strange concept.

Loren, you mentioned that the -51 harness supports the brake light... I just bought that harness for my car since I have a fixed GT2 style wing but there is no 3rd brake light connector on it? The GT2 wing reuses the factory 3rd brake light that was in the old engine cover spoiler so how do I connect it? Any suggestions?

Perfect, I will just extend the wiring from the upper 3rd brake light to my wing mounted one since I will not be using that one going forward. Thanks

David

On a 2 stop lamp car - it looks like they are just wired in parallel. Even the wire colors are the same.

I have a '02 C2 and will be installing a GT3 MKII (non Aerokit) decklid. There is no stop light in the decklid, but still the stop light above the lid, in the body of the car. Will the -51 wiring harness suit my needs?

Thank you,

Joe

Probably yes, you might want to tape the end of the extra stop light connector though.

I need to do the opposite. I removed a wing and am reinstalling my OEM movable wing. It is pretty straightforward except that the prior owner cut the original wiring harness before he figured out there was a different harness he needed. There are 5 wires that clearly hook into the mechanism/pump that raises the spoiler at speed. All of the cut wires match up.

BUT there are two wires that light up the 3rd brake light on the spoiler itself. I can't find two wires on the harness matching those wires. AND there are two large wires on the harness that didn't appear to have been cut that don't seem to plug into the spoiler (unless they plugged into the mechanism that raises the spoiler at speed. I can't see that anymore because the spoiler mechanism is put together and I don't want to take it apart if I don't have to). HELP! Thanks!

We need to know the model of your car and model year to get you the correct color codes for the spoiler wires.
