Engine Protection Plate

What exactly does the engine plate cover exactly? Does it prevent you from seeing the dreaded RMS leak should it arise?

It prevents you from puncturing a hole in your oil sump cover and having your oil drain all over the ground like I did last week. It also protects the low hanging water lines.

Some say it is not as necessary on the newer 996s.

The Engine Protection plate is useful on all 996s, particularly those that have been lowered, like mine. No, it will not hide an oil leak. The oil will find its way to your garage floor even if it takes an extra day or two. I have the plate because my car is lowered. If my car were not lowered, I might not have gotten one becauase it adds weight.

It is Porsche, and I bought mine from Carnewal. I do not have any pictures of it installed, but you can imagine what it would look like from the picture on the Carnewal website.

The wieght it adds is so minimal that you will never notice it. It weighs about 5 pounds. I doubt it wil affect your handling or acceleration.

does some other vendor sell it in the U.S.? The freight to Hawaii will probably be horrendous from the UK or wherever Carnewal is located. BTW, I've been waiting for two weeks for a freight quote from a slate Quarry in Wales, but who's grumbling? ;)

I have a little bit of a rough road to get to my driveway and this engine plate is a very attractive idea. I definitely want one.

A large piece of metal can only cost a hundred bucks or so and then cost several hundred dollars in freight from a foriegn country. I ship stuff to Hawaii all the time from Japan, P.I., Indonesia and other S.P. spots and you wouldn't believe the freight, customs, etc...

My quote above is retail from a US dealer. With a PCA discount or from the Porsche Parts at Dealer Cost link above you can likely get it cheaper.

Tech EFX in LA used to sell engine covers but I'm not sure if they are still around. Porsche dealers sell them for $145 (w/o PCA disc.) which, by the way, is the same cost as the sump cover that it protects.

...you should get this part at any Porsche Dealer. Officially it fits only on older models (3.4l up to MY2000 when they changed the sump cover) , but I installed mine on a MY2002 3.6l with X74 suspension.

This works fine, but one thread at the sump is missing. IMHO this is not a problem, as it is still fixed with three existing screws and in case of 'bottoming out' it is still supported from the engine block where the fourth screw should be. Of course you can drill the engine block, but I would not really recommend this :rolleyes:

Time to install: 5 mins if you have a lift or a pit.
