DIY help needed on 996 TT seatbelt swap

Hi all,

Well its been a whole month since I bought my first Porsche, and I just got some front Maritime blue seatbelts for the car. Its a 2001 TT. I was wondering if anyone has changed out the seatbelts and if there are any pics? Is this a difficult process? Do you have to reset the airbags?

:oops: Guess I missed this question...

Disconnect the battery and the airbag (light) should not be an issue.

Pretty straight forward otherwise. You will have to remove the rear side panel and B pillar trim. The small bolts (item 8 in the diagram) get only 7.5 ft-lbs. so be careful tightening them. The large bolt at the top and bottom each get 37 ft-lbs. The recoil mechanism also has a locking tab so make sure it is engaged the same as the old one was.

For the side panel:

1. Remove the rose cover where the seatbelt exits the side panel by pulling up and off.

2. Behind that you will find one phillips head screw. Remove that (without dropping it behind the panel).

3. Use a hex socket to remove the rear seat locking pin. The rest of the panel should now lift and slide out.

4. Disconnect the rear speaker wiring connection.

For the B pillar:

1. Lift the clothes hook bracket up and off.

2. Press seat belt height adjuster release out of the hex head bolt using a screwdriver.

3. Unscrew the hex head bolt of the seat belt.

Many thanks for your straightforward help. This is my first Porsche and I've only had it a couple of weeks. I have not turned a wrench on it...a little nervous. I will post back on my experience and will take some pics of the process too. Will post back when I get done.

Problem is this, they lock as soon as I try to pull on them and so I am stuck. Loren, do you know how to release the belts? I sure would like to do this one on my own. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Pull very very slowly... and try pulling at the normal (release) angle. I haven't quite figured out the trick but they usually do release.

I know I'm digging up an ancient post here, but could anyone offer some advice on pulling out that "rose cover where the seatbelt exits the side panel"? I have been tugging at it, working screw drivers up under it, wiggling it around, and all I seem to have accomplished is making it look loose and tacky, but there is no angle I can seem to attack it at that doesn't meet with a level of resistance that makes me very wary of bending or breaking that little piece of plastic...

Thanks for any help in advance!

It fits very tight with a metal clip (as I recall) so you need to pull straight up or carefully pry it up taking care not to damage the panel or rose.

Thanks, Loren! I'm going to give it another shot tomorrow morning, but if I'm still struggling, would you mind if I posted a couple of pictures with some arrows or something marking how I'm working at it and let me know if I'm applying pressure in the right way? You're a life saver!

Right but that metal bracket blocks the access to the bolt. There are no bolts visiable with the bracket in place. Thanks again for your help. I have a feeling once this is off I will be done in no time.

Yes. Up and down. The bolt in the belt bracket is always covered by the bracket in the picture. The factory manual pictures that you have attached (thank you!!) are after this bracket has been removed. If this bracket was removed the slider mechanism would be left and I could get at the bolt that would release the seat belt.

Loren, thank you for your help. Over the holiday I called a local shop that installs many roll cages. The bracket that i was trying to remove has 4 clips with two on each side of the adjuster button. You need to take a thin flat screwdriver and pry each one up without letting the other side snap back in. Once I got this braket off I was able to replace the seatbelt quickly.
