Due to a chronic Rear Main Seal problem (replaced four times), my 2001 2.7 got a replacement engine under warranty. The repair invoice has the old and new serial numbers, and the new one contains the letters "AT". I understand that an "X" somewhere indicates the engine is a rebuild, but I don't know what the "AT" signifies.

I do not know how to tell from a serial number if the engine is rebuilt, or if you can tell. I know how to tell from the part number. The part numbers start with 986.

This is 2 pictures of boxes the engines come in. The first is 986 100 924 FX for a 3.2 manual transmission. Letter X at the end of the part number mean it is a rebuilt.

The second is the engine that went into my friend Jean's car. The number is 986 100 922 03. The last 2 digits are numbers, not letters, so Jean's replacement engine was new. Like you Jean had the seal replace 4 times on his 2000 and then Porsche ultimatelly put in a new engine.

Jean was a unique case. After 4 leaky seals Porsche put in 3 rebuilt engines and each of the rebuilts had a vibration problem. Then Porsche ageed to put in a new engine and that is the one in the second picture.

Is their a part number on your invoice? Most likely it will be a rebuilt, due to the age of your car.

Thanks. I re-read the invoice, and yes, there's the part number with an FX. For a couple days I thought I had a new one. Interestingly, the replacement seems to pull better than the old one, though it's a bit "whinier". The old motor got more throaty at around 40 thousand miles.

Tool Pants, if you would: here's the part #: "986-100-922-FX"

The invoice also says "2.7L 2001 BOXSTER MA"

I would've thought the serial number's "AT" meant Automatic Transmission. Also I wonder if I do or don't have a 217 hp engine or a later version and what the "MA" might signify.

Thanks again for your help and I think this'll be the end of my questions concerning this topic.
