unless you want to throw everything out(i.e. CD Changer/amp) and only keep the speakers you are stuck the the PCM2. There are retro fit kits or you can try to find a used unit. Look in the DIY section for installation instructions, very easy.

It's possible to install the TP in place of the CDR-23 but you'll lose the 6 CD changer, since the TP doesn't support MOST. The only real issues I encountered were:

1) They changed the antenna connector between 2002 and 2003, so you need to get an adapter cable. I went to Circuit City and talked with one of their installers and he hooked me up with the right cable. Don't bother to talk to a salesperson, they don't have a clue.

2) You have to disconnect the wire that is used for CAN bus communication with the dash, otherwise, it thinks there is an invalid head unit in the car and it does weird things - like shut down the A/C. If you disconnect the wire, the dash unit just asssumes there is no head unit installed and everything works normally.

KarlS,

Do you know if the traffic Pro would fit in the shelf below the CD storage? I am thinking to leave my Cdr-23 alone and install the Traffic Pro as a stand alone navigation.

What do you think?

Thanks

At that point you are better off with a standalone navigation unit(more flexible) like a garmin navigation unit. You will not need to hook it up to any amp(you can't hook it up to the porsche amp, it's fiber optic, so there will also be a problem for the traffic pro if you want to share speakers/amp with your current system).

I used to have a streetpilot III(one of the first to have auto-recalculation when you make a mistake) which I used in my boxster, it was great and they have only gotten better and cheaper, also you get the flexability to take it in any car you use(i.e. rentals, wife's car). I went with the pcm2 on my 996 because I could and I got a really good deal on my unit(though it still cost me a few thousand to do).

BTW: They now have touch sensitive streetpilot's with many more features and the prices have come down and the internal storage has gone up, so check it out.

Cheers,

Another option would be to install an Alpine unit with a pop-up screen. I put one of these in my truck and it works great. The head unit should fit in the parcel shelf in the front console and the DVD reader will fit under the passenger seat.

The unit is DVD based so you never have to worry about swapping CDs. The only downside is that the updates are 2-3 times the cost of a CD update, so I don't do them as frequently.
