Greetings. I am new to the forum and I am considering purchasing an older 911 as a "project," but I have a few questions before I do so. The car I am thinking of buying is a 1977 model, however, I am having difficulties decoding the VIN number. For instance, the car has a 2.7 liter non-turbo motor in it (non-working), although there is a "turbo" badge on the body. The VIN number is 9117210115. The present owner is uncertain of the car's history and options, so I would like to determine the exact model before I submit an offer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it were a Turbo then the first 3 numbers would be 930.

So we know the model is 911 and year is 1977. The next number is the body type (i.e. coupe, Targa, etc.) and model (i.e. 911, or 911S).

Unfortunately the body type and model changed yearly so I don't remember what those mean (even though I had a 1976 911S coupe).

That is the best explanation I've found as well for my '76. Hard to find since the numbers are much shorter than current numbers. But now I know the number I have recorded is too short! Need to look at my car again and write it down again!rolleyes.gif

I emailed Porsche my vin number and they emailed back the associated engine number and the original delivery specification. Nice way to make sure you own what you think you own, if you know what I mean.

That's good. I'm going to send mine too. I figured that mine is a European model and not a US model last night. I think I recall the previous owner bringing it over here from Russia but didn't believe him at the time. Only 1868 made in 1976. And it's a 911 coupe not a S model thought my registration insurance papers say its a 911E. Weird.
